View Full Version : Tein vs Moog Tie Rods Comparison (PICS)
I got my hands on some Moog and Tein Tie Rod sets this week and though I would take some pictures for comparison reasons. It seems everyone though Moog was OEM Replacement, I'm glad to say that's incorrect.
Some thoughts on each...
Tein
Obviously Better Quality.
Inner Tie Rods Measured Roughly 5cm around through whole Inner Tie Rod.
Moog
Inner Tie Rods Measured Roughly 4.9cm around then thinning out by the treads to 4cm.
Tie Rod Ends has nipple valve to add grease whenever needed.
Tie Rod Ends are obviously beefier then Tein.
I will take some pictures of some stock ones. They look like noodles compared to these, I could only imagine what URAS or JIC look like in person.
Which one is better IMO? No Idea. Id imagine the Inner Tie Rod would be more susceptible to bending then the Ends but that's just personal experience. Tein Inner Rods are Beefier then Moog, but then the Moog Ends are beefier the Tiens. With the End installed on the Inner Rods the Moog keeps it beefiness, it only thins out to allow the threading onto stock units. You cant mix Tein with Moog Rods due to size.
Both are very good buys for the Price, which would you get? Its up to you, hopefully this will help you decide.

you can interchange ends with s14 model
tein tie rod uses s14 endlinks on both s13 and s14 inner rods

That would be a good combo if you got the Inner Moog Tie Rods and Kazama Ends. As long as the Moog are the same size thread, im 90% sure they are though.

Dousan: Long as the rods aren't in the car yet, you can get the pic anytime.
As for Tein or Moog, I think there's another factor that need to be considered before making the choice. If one is purchase either one to prevent bent rods, then either one would be fine as both are seemingly stronger than stock. However, some consider after market rods because of the spacer to increase the steering travel. Looking at the picture, the moog does not seem to offer the option to insert a spacer. Tein IIRC comes w/ spacers and one can opt to use them or not. JIC's are built in and may be grinded down by machine shop to achieve desired travel.

That's true, I asked a few people about the spacer and noone seemed to know what I was talking about. I should have asked Wayne at Phase2Motortrend about the spacer when I ordered em. It doesn't look like it comes with the Tein Sets but I could be wrong, I will have to take another look.
Aaron, did your come with the spacers? IIRC you had to get it separately...

can someone confirm which inner tie rods will fit the Kazama End links?
Dousan_PG
09-23-2003, 11:57 AM
confirm? its easy
Moog:
s13 uses s13 ends
s14 uses s14 ends
tein
s13 and s14 use s14 ends
jic: call them, nto sure. i THINK they use s14 for s14 model and s13 ends for s13 model

...And since tein inner rods use S14 ends, then when order kazama endlinks I should specify S14 units, eventhough I have an S13, right?

WeST sounds like you should call Tein, and get your steering rack spacers...
...hmmm.. I wonder if the tein spacers would work on the Moog rods?

i doubt it
1) tein sucks and wont sell stuff separte (see russ' beef w/ the lower mount)
2) look at this pic, i think it would be safe to run the spacer. you can see the shape of the spacer on this pic w/ the tein side. you can see a ring. the moog seems smaller, i kinda think it wouldnt be a good idea. but it has been done before (in japan) with home depot style mod, so if you dont mind the risk....

I replaced my stock one with a moog tie -rod end (cast). It has been on there for about 9 months now and the paint is starting to rust off and i remember it felt heavier than stock. I don't know about the tein's weight though but would think it would be better (lookis forged).

Will aftermarket tie rods and ends increase ride/steering harshness?
Dousan_PG
09-24-2003, 10:37 AM
only the ends will
sykikchimp

I don't know how tie rods or ends would affect harshness at all.. even the moog ends are metal on metal ball in socket. The moog is an OEM replacement part. So.. I wouldn't worry about it. If any harshness is increased it would only be a miniscule amount.

can anybody tell me if the spacers for the tein tie rods make a lot of difference. i know its suppose to increase steering wheel cut off angle would most of you recommend installing the spacer or no? thanks

I think you might have some rubbing issues at full lock with teh spacer IF you have wide aftermarket wheels. But thats only something to look-out for. I don't really see any reason to not install them. I would love to have a tighter turn-radius.

you DEFINATELY need adjustable TC rods w/ the spacer. caster is yoru friend.

that was random.. :coolugh: :D
Not sure how the tie rod spacer has anything to do with adjustable t/c rods.. I mean, they are extremely nice to have, but they aren't necessary.

The tie rod spacer or the tie rod has no direct relationship w/ adjustable T/C rods. However, if rubbing issue occurs w/ the increased steering travel. One of the way to solve it is to adjust the caster. And adjustable T/C rods do just that.

ny jee thanks
yeah at full counter w/ stock steering you'll rub inner fender wheel well w/ tire
tc rod fixes that
w/ the extended steering youll rub even more
tc rod will fix that

why do the kazama's have the double sided part?
Steeles
12-02-2003, 12:53 PM
wow back from the dead....
the Kazamas have the adjustable spacers on either side of the bearing so that when you lower the car you can keep the tie rod at a more horizontal level instead of some weird angle that may cause bumpsteer.
