i am about to drop in a red top with 3" greddy downpipe, 3" catback exhaust, denso platinum plugs, and greddy type S BOV into my s14. about how much hp will i be getting with this setup, and what quarter mile times should i be getting at a drag strip?
i am expecting mid 14's. anyone agree/disagree?

I ran
[email protected] on stock boost at New England dragway a couple of weeks ago.
I have a red top w/ Greddy FMIC, stock exhaust, 3" down pipe, NGK copper plugs, ebay stainless header. I also have a LSD in my car.
The car has been running too rich, and the idle is crappy. I haven't got it back on the scan tool, once I do it may run a couple of tenths better.

I believe the header came from here: http://topspeedauto.com/products/headers.htm
While I know headers aren't that great of an idea on stock turbo cars (lowers the exhaust presure before the turbo) but I am planning on putting a bigger turbo on the car, and it was <$300. The build quality on the header is unbelievable. It is stainless, mandrel bent, and has really, really thick flanges (probably close to .5"), and beautiful welds. The welds on the inside of the pipes were even smoothed out! Everyone who has seen it has said it is one of the best built headers they have seen.
The being that is was half the price of most the other headers, i figured wtf. The only down side is that the header comes close to my brake master. Since I wrapped them and changed the brake fluid I haven't had any problems.
Ohh yah the only sticker I have on my car is the one that says "I banged old_s13's Mom and all I got was this lousy sticker" :)

first its a header. its an I4 you only have 1
second its not even a header its an exhaust manifold :)

oh ****, thats crazy! I have the SAME damn sticker too.. what a small world!
nerd> I wasnt talking smack about the header, just incase you were wondering. What I was saying, is why label it as an "ebay" header -- why not just give credit to the company that made it.
btw steels, it IS a header.
Speaking of which, I've had two different headers on my s13, one each from BOTH of your mothers. :)

Rule of thumb with aftermarket exhaust manifolds, they are bound to crack, question is WHEN ? Buy a good quality, it will last longer, but $hitty, get $hit (stock will also crack, but when have you heard that happened , not often)
For example, friend of mine bought an ebay manifold, iirc it was sold by a user edohccivic or something. Looked very nice, welds looked nice, inside was smooth (like rednerd's g/f :p ). Ok, all looks well, isntall it, 1st day no probs, 2nd day no prob, 3rd day no prob, 4th day no prob, 5th day .. some hard driving was done, about an 1 hour of this, 6th day .. boost is lagging, 7th day take a look at it, use my STRONG HAND to move things around, ahhh what do you know .. GOT CRACK .., $300 + shipping for 7 days of use .. good price , huh
Another example of when OEM is de STRONG .. i do not care for an increase of 5-9 hp when its costing me a new manifold every 2 months, I LIKE TO LAST A LONG TIME !! (oem)

btw - He used Headers in the proper way since it was in reference to multiple header manufacturers products. Thus the plural spelling.

Speaking of moms and crack -
When your manifold / header / mom cracks wouldn't you hear it?
BTW - I think I'm going to send my header off to jet hot this winter when I redo the turbo, hopefully that will keep the heat down and protect against cracking.
project_240 - sorry for fsck'ing up your post.

You are such an :mrmeph:. You don't want to make any friends on here do you? Also, since you seem to be so great, what do you have done to your car? And tell your mom I'll come back when i get my check, cash would be even better.

Sorry, no, no thanks. Friends? I already have friends on this forum. What I DONT need, are stupid friends. Unfortunate but true, this forum DOES have a great deal of idiots on here. How come I never yell at anyone on the hybrid forum? Maybe because everyone on there is chill. Maybe because people on that forum dont ASK stupid questions. They dont try to use electric fans to turbo their cars. They dont call their cars stupid names either!
My car..? Its the greatest. Its a 1990 240SX hatchback powered by an automatic KA24E. Its so fast, it will tear your car apart.
I am ready to race, and will race you my friend, ANY DAY.
KA24E fo'lyfe! ;)

OK, just to stir things up...
while we're on headers, has anyone seen/heard of/tried this one?
CTC claims it's "uncrackable", while that's obviously a lie (nothing is indestructable), it DOES show that they know about the common issues with "ebay" types cracking. I'd like to believe them but....

so you guys are saying all exhuast manifolds crack no matter what? so i shouldn't get a jic or hks exhuast manifold for the sr even though it claims to improve air flow by 25%? where do the headers usually crack and why does the ctc one seem to be different?

FRpilot
JIC is crap, do not buy it !! Within a month, crack
HKS, do not have personal or know anyone personally who is/ran one
Then again, some people have good luck and last a while (2 yrs or so)
If i had to buy one, I will go with a custom shop that has experience over a mass-produced manifold, -- quality control :)

With proper welding and materials a tubular manifold shouldnt crack. Check out, http://www.supertmotorsports.com/index2.html They make some great manifolds, the one on his 2jz powered toyo truck is beautiful.

The CTC header is listed at $1,150.00 .......and thats their sale price. It looks like quality and all...but....I wouldnt pay near that amount for 304SS. There are better grades of Stainless Steel out there for that price (321SS for example (http://www.burnsstainless.com/321tubing/321tubing.html)).

but why not just go with Inconel 625?
I wonder what kind of warranty they provide on the CTC header?

I started hearing an exhaust leak a couple of days ago. At first I thought it was the sh1tty gasket on the downpipe, but when I checked it out, there is a nice big crack going 3/4 of the way around the weld that connects the turbo flange to the collector.
I blame this one on you Zelda. Had you not opened your mouth (figuratively of course) a couple of days ago my header would have been fine. Just kidding. Fark!
I guess I'll have to put the old manifold back on. It will be interesting to see if my track time changes any with the stock manifold. My prediction is that i drop a tenth or three on stock boost due to the increased pressure before the turbo...

hehehe :p
Just CRACK open the wallet and shell out another $300 + shipping for another 1-3 months :hammer:
BTW< how long did that manifold last ?
rednerd
09-25-2003, 02:05 PM
Aprox. two months of continous usage. I noticed it imediately after I fixed my radiator (the upper tank cracked). I think the radiator pissing coolant may have caused a rapid contraction of the metal. The header is supposed to be warrenteed for 5 years. We'll see if the guy I bought it from returns my email. If not I think I'll have it welded, strengthened via triangle supports, magnafluxed and jet-hot coated. The jet hot coating might keep the heat cycling down.
Or I could just eat the $300 and polish my stock manifold. Either way the stock manifold is going back on today.

Hey, could you take a picture of the aftermath ?
I doubt the rad' problem help the manifold crack .... i would think ..
5 yrs, try and get a new one, then weld, strengthen via triangle supports, magnafluxed and jet-hot coated. The jet hot coating might keep the heat cycling, that should help make it last longer, but how much is that going to cost, is it worth it ..
