View Full Version : RB won't turn over

I just recently got one of the Wiring Specialties wiring harnesses and before that I had not ever started my RB. I connected everything, and when I turn the key the fuel pump primes, but when I turn the key to "start" nothing happens. I hear the relay click, and that's it.

Then I found out the spade connector wasn't giving any signal, so I tried to bypass it and wire power straight to the spade on the starter... while the engine turned over, it would still not start.

Any ideas? I'm stumped at this point.

Are you sure the fuel lines are on right? I had mine backwards at first. If it will turn over but not start make sure to check for fuel and spark.

while jumping the starter you need someone to Turn the key as if you were to start it normally

If its an S14 chassis check the Fuses under the hood

I was the one turning the key while I had my friend using another car battery to jump the starter.

it's an s13 chassis with a S2 rb25det

Starter is good, I actually swapped it with another when that was my first guess.

so now it turns over but does not start?
compression check, check plugs, check injectors?
exhaust system free of obstruction <(this one has happened to me, hollowed out my CAT, started right up).

Update on info... I got the engine to turn over with the key now. Also, I checked my plugs and such and there was water near the coilpacks. I decided to swap out the plugs and clean up the coilpacks. A friend of mine suggested to spray some starter fluid in the cylinders while the plugs were out... So I did.

The car still turned over very slowly, but it started, revved to maybe 2500rpm or so, then died back out, and wouldn't start again. So now I'm beginning to think it IS a fuel issue. I'm going to look into that next. Any other suggestions?

YouTube - RB25DET first start (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFPvgyjgxwM)

Some issues resolved...

See how slow it cranks? Has anyone ever had to shim a starter on a Nissan or RB? I'm thinking it could be that...

Add more grounds

My block has 2 grounds now, do you really think it needs more?

The starter gets hot when I try to turn it over. Same with my battery though... hmm...

Sounds like it.

Make sure whatever ur grounded to is not painted over. If need add a ground to the starter.

Sounds like a plan, if you think of anything else, please do let me know! (=

Thanks!

All grounds checked, starter ground added and the same issue exists.

I guess I'm just gonna wait on another starter and a redtop and see if that helps any..

is the battery to the chassis an adequate ground?

Again I say, theres a short. Check wiring. Make you don't have any exposed wiring. Starter is wired directly to the battery so make sure there are no shorts on there. Get a volt meter and check voltage at the starter. If its not 12+ volts, you are not getting enough power.

Tommy! I DID. I'm getting enough voltage to the starter. I even re-did my power with 0gauge instead of 4gauge. I used sand paper and took the paint off of everything that was grounded. New battery ground is 0gauge also.

The starter grounds it self though the casing, maybe there is corrosion in between the block and the stater housing?

Hmm a possibly scenario... I suppose I'll see next weekend when I put my new starter on.

From your video it seems like you have a weak battery. RB's take alot of juice to start up.

Change the battery to one with high cranking power. And if that still doesn't fix it, Try using a jumper wire straight from the starter solenoid and jump it to the battery to see if it cranks better.
And if it still is weak then change the starter.

And whats up with your idle? you must have a bunch of vacume leaks or something??

I have a battery with 950 cold cranking amps right now... can't get much more boss than that. The idle was like that due to not having a coupler on, and possibly having a bad TPS.

Starter is already on the way... fingers crossed.

Thanks though!

That's what I thought, I had one batter, dropped it for another, and tried a brand new red top today too... all having the same issue.
