rear calipers wont fit new pads s14

hey guys. so i was trying to swap in some new but used (low mile) pads into my rears, and for some reason, i cant fit 2 new pads into one caliper, so i replaced the back pad with the new one, and kept the front pad there. still has abt 2mm of life left, but thats not much.

but for some reason, thats all that fits. the top bolt part of the caliper wont go on wen i try and put the caliper teeth over the pads. there is plent of room INSIDE the caliper, but the length from the teeth to the top bolt part is too small for 2 new pads...
strange thing is, the 2 new pads im trying to get on, came off my friends s14
same year, same model, same every thing.
i think my cars just retarded...

anyone know wtf is going on?

pictures would help? With the new pads, do they not fit around the rotor? did you push the caliper piston back in?

You need to push the piston down by turning it with pliers.

After you compress the piston, make sure the 4 slots on the piston line up with the little tabs on the brake pads.

the piston is fully compressed. thats what i meant by this : "there is plenty of room INSIDE the caliper"

the two pieces i circled are too close together. the bolt on part wont go on if the caliper is over the brakes. idk how else to explain it lol. but there is no problem with the piston.

take a picture of the problem. i'm not sure what you mean by "too close together". it's a solid piece of metal; it didn't change when you took it off. are you trying to bolt the caliper on the wrong side of the mounting bracket?


read this, ignore the retrofitted bracket/rotor stuff. make sure your brackets everything look like this when reassembled.

Not at all. I know it didn't change. I'm sayin the pads might be too beefy to fit inside. I'd take a picture of my caliper, but I dnt wana rly go thru all that again lol.

What I mean by too close together, is that with both new pads in, I can't put the caliper on. There's the two bolts u take off to get the caliper off. A lower one, and a top one. I can't get the top one to go on the piece u screw it onto, because the two teeth on the front of the caliper won't go over the bulky brake pad. The teeth I'm tlking abt r the two pieces of metal that go over the front brake pad.

did you get the wrong pads? iirc, 95-96 aren't interchangeable with 97-98 and/or abs/no-abs aren't interchageable. or something like that.

Idk they shud be the right pads...like I said they came off a friend of mines car, and we both have the same exact year nd model. Only diff is his is auto nd mines stick

man double check you compressed your piston
and when your trying to slide it on where you say the teeth hit
move the caliper along the bolt you actually where able to fit towards you as your trying to slide it on.. youll see that the rubber boots on the bolt compresses,try to slide it on then.

Yeah its casted metal, those two circled pieces are the same distance no matter what, piston in or out. Besides theyre not even on the same plane since the screws extend past the caliper. If his is auto, its more likely to have abs than a stick. check that because that has something to do with it aswell but idk if it changes caliper size. Also make sure your using the right placing on pads. Theres 4 pads total for the rear. Taking one side into consideration there is one that goes infront of the rotor and 1 behind. They fit in the caliper either way but only fit in the rotor one way. Make sure you didnt flip that either... other than that idk.

the only thing I can tell you to do is to make sure the piston is all the way in. The piston will line up with the caliper itself if it is all the way in. But if you are saying there aren't enough room to allow 2 pads and a rotor to fit in between, something is wrong...

It's probably your slide pins that are seized. Those things your caliper bolts onto... They're supposed to move FREELY, like with just one finger. The slide pins are attached to your caliper bracket. You'll probably need to break them loose and clean the shit out of them as well as the holes they slide into on your caliper bracket., Re-lube them with really good high temp brake grease ( just a little you don't want a vacuum forming from all the grease), and get new boots for them if they're torn.

if you badly scored / fucked up your slide pins while getting them out, just buy a set of new ones. They're like 8 bucks for each corner.

Really. Used pads? Get new pads. Compress the pistons correctly. Insert pads and your done. Are they stock calipers or z32 brakes? Your post is very vague. We really need more information. Are you sure that you are compressing the piston correctly? I hope that you realize that with an actuator style caliper you need to compress and turn the piston at the same time. There is a special tool made to do this.

its exactly this! im glad someone could understand what i was saying lol. one of my slide pins moves, but the other one is stiff as fuck. so that must be my problem. sorry i couldnt give better vocabulary guys, but im glad atleast someone was able to decifer my problem lol.

If the slide pin issue didn't fix it then I'd almost guarantee he has abs and you do not. Just had this issue myself. I wasn't thinking when I ordered rotors and got the abs ones instead of non. Abs discs are thicker and I believe there may be a slight difference size wise of the actual caliper which would explain why you can't get them to fit.
