View Full Version : So I bought a 93 honda..

With a 30k motor package imported from Japan. 2500$ not bat.
It was meant to be a little daily driver for my father to get to and from work each day.
why did I choose this honda? An extremely close friends older brother who is the lead tech over at aamco not only installed the motor but showed me receipts for it, the company it was ordered from, installed a new brake system, serviced the motor, etc. So basically the whole kit and kaboodle. It ran great!............ for about 4 weeks (being driven minimally because my dad was hospitalized)
so it breaks down the first day he takes it to work! Starts rattling like crazy and he shut it off and called the tow truck.
I call my personal mechanic and he comes over to check it out no charge, yanks the valve cover and a valve is sticking, yanks the spark plugs, cylinder 1 - fuel soaked no compression, cylinder 2 - water residue and oil, 3 and 4 were fine. No idea what other damage there is to the bottom end till its pulled apart
now he is saying he has no time to even help out with anything and told me to be smarter next time I buy a used car, what a dick!
yes I guess it was an idiotic move to make the purchase but I 100% trusted him, why would you rip off a friend of the family?
Just wondering what you guys would do in my situation other than bite a belt and take the loss. Any recommendations?

take the loss. i bought an ae92 with a 20V swap last year. lost $2700 when it blew up the week after i bought it. sucks, but that's what you risk when you buy a modded car. *shoulder shrug*

think all those used engine swaps (if not used cars in general) are pretty much a dice roll.
I was lucky with my swap's engine, but the tranny went out within a year of ownership.
You could do a compression check on the engine & check for frame damage.
Otherwise I think there's only so much precautions you can take when picking up a used car and/or engine.
the said 'mechanic' could have been a bit more diplomatic,
but I'm not sure what he did wrong exactly.
Take a loss on the engine.
Just get some used cheaper engine (D16 or whatever they're called) and throw it in for a few hundred bucks.
If you already have a B series mount, the B18b (non-vtec) engines usually go for around $300 including tranny & ecu's.
You'd probably be better searching on Honda-tech.com for the parts & info.

Thats why its always best to do a major tune-up right after buying a car. After all, You guys did use it for 4 weeks.
If i was on the sellers shoes, i wouldnt blame noone else but the buyer and whoever drove it.
Understand if the car showed some kind of hint it was giving out at purchase date.
But yeah, bite the bullet. sell the car. Get some money back. Or try and fix it.
If the head isn't warped, it shouldn't be too expensive to get a headgasket replace.
But always a good idea to get the head resurface. Im sure you know that. GL.

haha this is a little 1.5 litre sedan, not an eg hatch. I typed that on my droid sorry I wasn't clear as to what kind of car it was. I understand taking a loss on something that a stranger sold me but not someone that Ive been associated with for this long. If my little brother's best friend wanted to buy a car from me I don't think I would just rip him a new one by giving him a ticking time bomb.
As far as AAMCO goes, LOL is what what I thought too. I guess I'm just another statistic in the large group of folks that have proven AAMCO hires shitty employees. But prior to this, who was I to judge the guys profession? lol it doesn't exactly require going down to some performance lab to install a little 1.5 in an auto sedan.

it's the same thing. like ronmcdon said, ANY swap is a gamble. i bought my car from a mechanic, too. doesn't mean shit. eat the cost of a new engine, or send it to the junkyard.

Yeah, I know exactly what you are saying and it really is no ones fault but my own, the hilarious part is that we owned it for 4 weeks but maybe put 5 hrs of driving time on it because my dad was at home in bed with a broken collar bone, so this was it's first big commute! I just feel unlucky I guess. Feel like if he was really a mechanic he would have seen the fuel soak on the plug and the residue in the cylinder and at least reconsider selling it to someone that is around his immediate family all the time. I guess thats why the little retard works at AAMCO. :p
Then again as an educated buyer I shouldn't have put off checking the cylinders prior to purchase just because it was a friend! What the hell was I thinking

Wanna know the sad part! I ALMOST GOT HIM A KOUKI, it was a beautiful little black auto that would have been perfect but it was twice as much and had 3 times the miles. Look at me trying to be practical getting something I thought would get great gas milage, run forever, and all through a friend! My lucky day turned out to be nightmare.

Learn your lesson, your not really suppose to do business with people you know.
