so i just picked up an 89 240sx with sr swap..when i get in the car i can smell fuel and what not and its getting annoying fast. I looked under the car for fuel leaking and nothing..the car is a full TBE with screamer pipe and i put the rubber groments back in the firewall and that got the smell down some but when i get on it i can smell the fuel coming the cabin from somewhere..the shifter does not have boot over it..my guess is that screamer pipe is putting the all the fumes in my car? the injectors arent leaking that i can tell cause i dont see a trail of gas with dirt running down anywhere..this shit has to go asap! oh yeah and im buying a new O ring for the fuel pump as i was told i could be such a little thing like that letting the smell in too.

Dont look at my post number!
Very old diagram, and they spelled the word "too" wrong:

Do you have an AFG?

you should look into getting a charcoal canister, they really help and you might need an o2 sensor if your getting black fumes...definitely get a rubber gasket thingy for your shifter..that should cover it

now that i think of it there isnt one in the lower part of the DP on up top and without an 02 you run rich as shit!!!..what is a charcoal canister?

Charcoal canister is pointless in my own opinion, it's just something that helps keep you "legal" in emissions.

oh i have no emissions but even if i did i still wouldnt pass cause the swap to sr

Wow this thread has some pretty useless advice.... So I'll add mine.
You sure its coming from the engine bay? Bad seals in the fuel pump covers causes this fuel smell issue too. I don't care if you aren't leaking actual fuel but if the o ring sucks, its going to smell. There are two seals, ony in the car, and one on the tank. Take a look.
Plugs don't look bad, just change them. You can't shit on a dirty plug that's been in there. Get some new plugs, drive around for 15 minutes, then pull the plug and check. Those just look dirty.

hahaaha....yeah im getting a new O ring for the pump and whats the other ring is it the rubber gasket one when you open the tank? i need to fix this quick please

Ergh what I did was use a paper gasket sealer or spongy double sided tape. the most important thing is the O-ring....

alright cool..this o ring?

That is the only correct one... Trust me I have searched for a cheap replacement, but only FRS and couple of other stores have it.... Those OEM crap don't work, its always the wrong size....

Just for the record, I don't think this is a running rich condition!
raw fuel smells different to me than, unburnt fuel. So this is a technically a fuel leak issue.
I just diagnosed an s13sr running rich,...out of nowhere! Code 34 knock sensor circuit. I could smell the unburnt fuel when he pulled in.

It seemed like your problem was not actually a running rich condition, It was actually a fuel leak issue. And you fixed it by replacing the o-ring in the tank.
Or did you?

The wide band read rich when he bought the car to me, I pulled codes and reset the ecu and circuit. He drove away with less money than he cam with. It's only been 6hrs.

i have not done it yet..and i will be running wideband soon....so did you correct his fuel trims, because reseting an ecu it will just throw it again unless corrected

The rich issue was caused by the malfunctioning knock sensor, once it was repaired the air fuel ratio was normal. I didn't find any other problems and he hasn't called me crying. lol
I'll call him and ask him, if everything is still good, tomorrow.
He was just running in the knock map, caused by faulty sensor.

damn i could be running rich also cause no rear 02 sensor i hope the plug is there

This was a knock sensor, not 02 sensor. I say check codes and go from there.

how am i gonna check codes..i gotta find the obd connector under the dash somewhere, you gotta pic of what im looking for

Use the diagnostic screw on the ecu, to check for codes.
The consult looks like this:

you need a consult cable and software, or consult to use the consult port

whats the price range for one of those gismos, and can anything else be done like tuning at all or just checking codes?

Blazt.biz for the cable, and program needed.
No tuning from it, simply logging ability and code scanning. Still very resourceful tool.

well i got hooked up to a wideband and did a few pulls...setup is weird but ok..vacuum hooked up to bov and wastegate the afrs where shit like 13 down to 11.9 running 4-5psi running lean which leads to detonation and that i dont want...2nd set of pulls where with the wastegate vacuum disconnected running 12psi at 11.7 down to 10.8 running good....so why is this?
slider2828
02-09-2011, 09:31 AM
Bad timing.... Detonation doesn't mean there isn't enough fuel. The timing map could be shit and you blow shit up because of it.
norcalslider
02-09-2011, 10:45 AM
dont tell me that...how can i correct this or even find out
slider2828
02-09-2011, 10:50 AM
You get it to an experience tuner... If at 11.9 at 4k rpm you are hearing detonation.... assuming you know what detonation sounds like..... that is a timing issue.
thats ASSUMING you know what you are saying. detonation sounds like if you put marbles into a tin can and you hear clak clak clak while you are boosting....
norcalslider
02-09-2011, 10:53 AM
the 11.9 is when wastegate is hooked up though which is weird

Those screamer pipes never seal. I would get rid of it as soon as you can.
If you are smelling raw fuel, check the o rings on your injectors, as well as the cushion rings under the fuel rail. Also a huge place to check is the seal on your fuel pump. They get stretched out and let fumes inside the car.
But leaky injector would cause you to run rich and smell gas.

Go to someone who knows something about motors and cars.... I dunno this is getting pretty messy.... though, but at 3-4 PSI 13 afr isn't bad.... but can you really hear detonation? What turbo are you running? What ECU?
norcalslider
02-09-2011, 12:56 PM
i hear no detonation and on t25,stock ecu..thing is where i live there isnt shit up here for someone too look at it
slider2828
02-09-2011, 01:41 PM
LOL Of course its reno....
At low rpm 3-4k rpm at 13AFR is fine @ 3-5 PSI, you just have to worry about 400 when it gets up to 8-10PSI that it should be around 12 or less.
norcalslider
02-09-2011, 03:53 PM
well seeing as how the AFR is 11 and down at 12 psi running good i might have to leave it at 12 psi

12 on a stock t25, you going to need a new turbo soon. Some have reported a year on it, I just got 6 months.... Depends.... but save money for a new turbo.... then the whoel cost thing starts rolling up ahhaha
