I am building a S13 SR20DET and I am planning on making 700+ whp and I am trying to figure out how big of an intercoller is needed to support the power. I am have searched and have been unable to find any specific information related to my problem. I know there aren't many people on this forum making this kind of power. Any and all advice will be appreciated.
I currently have a front mount with 3 inch openings, 3 inches thick, 30.5 inches from opening to opening, and 12 inches tall.
Just trying to figure out if this will suffice or do I need to upgrade?

It really depends on the level of boost you're running as well to get there... Something in that range would easily need a 4 inch core with your comparable other dimensions. Quality of the intercooler is going to come into factor as well, as a cheapo won't suffice very long. Being looking for hp ratings, max boost ratings, as well as boost drop (efficiency). Many reputable intercooler sellers have such stated facts for their products...

Cool. I am thinking that I will be running anywhere between 35-40psi using a borg warner s366 turbo. I will check intercooler manufacturers web sites. thanks

This one's supposedly 800hp
GO-AUTOWORKS GT 800HP Front Mount Intercoolers / FMIC (http://www.go-autoworks-store.com/gogt180in.html)
Or a Godspeed for $150 lol
Amazon.com: Universal Godspeed Spec R Turbo Intercooler Charger 800hp +: Automotive (http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Godspeed-Turbo-Intercooler-Charger/dp/B00409ALFQ)
not sure I would trust a Godspeed at such high boost, but who knows... I run em for lower boost apps all the time, but an intercooler is an intercooler (same dimensions) at a bar of boost.
There's a ton of em out there ranging in all kinds of prices... but it's looking like they're all 3.5 inches thick and up.

It is hard to tell which manufacturer to go with. I have an ebay intercooler right now and it was fine. I was making a little over 400whp at 19 psi. I will continue to do more research. I appreciate all of your help. I just don't want to spend alot of money to find out it doesn't work, but at the same time I don't want to cheap out just to find out that I should have bought another one. But like you said an intercooler is an intercooler and it is hard to figure out whether you are paying extra for a quality product or just the name stamped on it.

Size <> Effeciency. CHeck with the name brand core suppliers and go from there.

Sounds like you and me are in the same boat right now. I am also running s366 this season looking to hit the 800hp mark. thinking power to weight and other factors into play (can't tell you everything (;) to make my car run an 8 in the 1/4. But I am teasing the idea of a water/air intercooler and mounting it inbetween the motor and rad. main reason for this is to shorten the lenght of the i/c pipping to help with the spool. Also was searching to see if anyone has done an a/a in that location. I have seen a w/a done on a 800hp sr in i think it was import tuners motor build off. (4g63 won) but the sr had the best power band out of all the motors used. Also, an i/c is not just an i/c and only go based off size. You still need one with a really good core. A precision i/c works better than a full race i/c just because of the core design is better, even if they are the same size. It is hard to find out info for big builds cause not many sr guys do them. Search the thread SR23DET and you will find my old build thread for my path to the t-2 turbo record and also a recent build another guy did on here using i believe a 6265.

i havent put it on yet. its sitting in the garage waiting for a manifold and all the other odds and end bullshit. im still thinking if i should do a water/air or a front mount air/air. I also have a 2.35 stroker and a fully ported race head with 280 kelfords. No slouching in this build.

the problem with intercoolers is there are so many to choose from and no comparable back to back results, at least nothing standardized to compare them with. So you are basically buying "cautiously" and by that I mean you adjust the cost of the intercooler to the application basically if you have a cheap oem setup you might not feel bad using a $90 ebay intercooler. and if you have a 800rwhp you certainly would feel "better" using a name brand or something custom with a proven "core".
Your next (more costly) option is to do your own testing. record intake air temps and pressure differentials before and after your intercooler, then swap intercoolers and do it again. the one that has to best temperature drop with the least pressure drop is the one you want to use (that sounds right?) somewhere along the way you find the cross between resistance and cooling capability, and choose accordingly.

^^^^Thanks. I wasn't planning on skimping out on an intercooler. I am just trying to figure out what is the best route.
This car isn't going to be a daily driver by any means. It is mostly gonna be a track car that can be driven on the streets.
Whereda240at= it sounds like you got a nice build. I am basically doing a mazworx 2.2l big bore build with 280 tomei solid cams. It should be fun.

I have a buddy that has a twin turbo mustang that makes over 800whp and is using a treadstone intercooler. I was checking out their website and they have an intercooler that will support 1200hp with a price tag that is a little more than an ebay intercooler. Has anyone else on this forum ever used one on their 240?
