F1 aerodynamics are just getting silly. Look at those front wings, with 47 sub-wings.

so, they concentrate on middle downforce ? eliminates for a bigger wing on the rear?

^^slicks have been back for a few years now.

anywho, i'm pretty psyched for this season. the new cars are more radically engineered than last year, so i'm looking forward to seeing the developments as the year goes on.

Just heard about this:

Kubica's condition improving after rally car crash - Open Wheel - MiamiHerald.com (http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/02/07/2054918/kubicas-condition-improving-after.html)

hope he makes a full recovery and comes back to F1 soon.

it looks interesting, but there's only 2 clear cut overtaking spots; one at the end of the pit straight and another at the end of the straight on the back side of the track. i predict a pretty boring race track.

also, virgin racing released their MVR-02 today:

http://assets.virginracing.com/cdn/media/image/1a387b79.jpeg

look boring. i can't believe people think this car looks better than the sauber. anyways, the best thing about these 2011 cars is that a bunch of the aero developments the teams came up with for this year is all crap that i had in mind/designed for our FSAE car last year. it makes me feel better about my limited knowledge of aero development. haha.

bahrain is a borefest every year. i always watch every race all the way through no matter what, and even bahrain 2010 tested my patience. i would be pretty happy if every arab race was axed because they're always boring as all hell and nobody goes to them anyways.

in other news, it looks like the mclaren is gonna be pretty slow (not enough downforce, reliability problems too) and the mercedes needs some major cooling package reworking (they had to cut holes in it to keep it from overheating, lol).

I agree. Its boring and too dusty. Damn desert. The drivers are too caught up worring about the damage from the dirt sandblasting them. If they're so loaded there they should buy some trees and bushes. lol

Kind of a douche move getting his former team mate whom he's faster than and I do think he has a good chance to win it all with that very fast car.

Anyone know of a good free F1 Fantasy league?

Wow, this Lotus naming thing got crazy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_Racing#Use_of_Lotus_name

Essentially the real one is Lotus Renault GP. Since Group Lotus (owners of Lotus cars) has revoked the license of Lotus Racing for name usage and has bought a stake in Renault F1 as title sponsor. Also Group Lotus has the support of the Chapman family (creators of Lotus).

Also there is no real Lotus constructor and none are using Lotus engines. Lotus Racing just has the rights to the green/gold color scheme and Team Lotus name for now until the court sorts it out.

extract the folder somewhere and run BBC.cmd and select the channel option
Works awesome. It sets a proxy on your computer to watch it.
But when you close that proxy you gotta change your browser proxy back.

I watch the whole season on that

1hr40min of pure footage and no commercials and the commentary is at a pleasing audio level, you can hear all the sounds of the track still, and they go really into the paddocks. I like the commenting on Speed, but their coverage is only decent at best compared to BBC.

Gnnr
03-26-2011, 01:55 PM
It seems none of the top 3 where using KERS. Red Bul decided not to use it and Hamilton was having problems with it.

Petrov is starting next to Alonso, maybe he'll get in front and block him the whole race again, lol. I feel bad for Massa, its like Alonso and Ferrari sucked the life and soul out of him with the Team Order incident.

Loved Kobayashi's aggressive driving and I'm really really impressed with rookie Sergio Perez. Paul di Resta is ok, we'll see how he does. I like the Force India team, I think they have a solid car. I don't like Maldonado, when onboard with him you can see his driving sucks.

The FIA is not letting HRT raced due to failing to meet the 107% rule. I'm totally in agreement on this considering they failed to use any of the testing sessions in pre-season and they had an extra 2 weeks to be ready since Bahrain got canceled. Hell, they didn't even use the practice sessions. They need to get their shit together if they want to race in F1, they seem like amateurs.

i forgot, when you guys use that program, it changes your PC's proxy settings, so make sure you go into your browser settings and untick Use proxy otherwise your internet may not work when you reboot. No biggie in my opinion.

Great race!

Perez, wow!Only 1 stop! Kobayashi did great too!

Petrov did a great job, happy for him and team but feel bad for Kubica.

How the fuck are Red Bull not using KERS? Guess DRS/KERS seems pretty pointless for now.

Vettel is fast, but I want to see how good he does having to overtake and starting further down the grid.

Alonso, Webber, Button, and Massa had a shitty day. Barichello was moron for running into Rosberg, that was avoidable IMO.

I've made my mind up on the coverage. BBC is only better for pre and post race footage and commentary because Speed starts late and ends early. But Speed has much much better in race commentary. BBC commentary is pretty bleh in race. Halfway through the race I switched to Speed and only went to BBC during commercials.

2 weeks until next race, booo. lol.

-the racing was better, passing!!! wow!
can't believe Hamilton held is spot with that splitter hanging down the whole time. it was probably sucking the car down so it stuck better but at the same time created major drag.

can't wait to see the new parts preform on a track with a longer straight. But i dislike how you can't defend with the drs or kers

They have both, they're just not using KERS (installed but disabled I guess). DRS is pretty pointless too. The biggest impact on passing during the race was still bump drafting. People are attributing that to the DRS, but it was the drafting.

Don't be surprised if Hamilton also gets disqualified...

yeah, when the KERS is charging its puts a load on the drive-train would slow em down a little.

that was the first time i saw that much passing on turn one. so i didn't think it was pointless at all.

they should remove the KERS in total, and maybe add DRS to another wing.

I've made my mind up on the coverage. BBC is only better for pre and post race footage and commentary because Speed starts late and ends early. But Speed has much much better in race commentary. BBC commentary is pretty bleh in race.
the problem with speed is that their commentators speculate quite a lot, and normally end up stating things that are quite wrong. BBC's coverage is a lot more percise as well as it gives a much better view from spectator/team owner/race driver perspective. if you don't like all that stuff, SPEED's is better since it caters more towards just the spectators from a fan perspective.

quite the opposite. that broken splitter is what started the flow of air to the diffuser and floor. by it being broken it gave the car less downforce. DRS is only for overtaking if you are within one second of the car in front. KERS can be used anytime during the lap as long as you haven't used the limited amount per lap. RBR isn't running KERS since good ol Newey designed his car around keeping everything tight and tidy aero wise. and there is NO way he will compromise the design of his car for KERS. but personally I could imagine that they will use a smaller battery for the start of the race if they every decide to use KERS. and don't forget, cars running KERS has to carry around that extra weight. with the looks of it, RBR cars are harder on their tires than Mclaren.

Is it the wmv files you downloaded from BBC that are blocked? Mine are working fine, at least for the next 30 days. lol It looks like tunebite might remove the protection, might try that at some point.

[edit] Just tried tunebite and it removes the protection, YES!!! The bad is it's like $40 and takes a really long time (1:1 conversion). A 2 hr show would take 2hrs to convert, or longer, could always do the conversion while I sleep.

Redbulls have KERS
they just weren't using it
as they haven't worked out the kinks in their system
the negative effect on the brake bias is what I remember
hearing was the main reason some teams don't like using it
didn't seem like Vettel needed it in any case

for those having problems with the BBC file
you could probably find a torrent or grab the race off newgroups
I usually do the latter since they show up fairly quickly.

Watching BBC stream of P3 right now. I always like to know the lap records for the tracks to have a reference point.

The Australia GP lap record was 1:24.125 held by M. Schumacher, that Vettel broke with a 1:23.529.

The Malaysian GP lap record is 1:34.223 held by J.P. Montoya.

Lets see if anyone gets near that this weekend closest is 1:36.876 by Webber in P2.

Another vettel win. Not surprised lol.

Im convinced that redbull has him sand bag the car alot during practice and qualifying then unleashes during the races. And he gets the special treatment in the team where Webber is in a identical car that just cant keep up, though we know Webber has the potential.

Gnnr
04-10-2011, 04:36 AM
Damn you Vettel, lol and not using KERS again for most of the race? Webber couldn't use it at all, amazing race for him to climb back the way he did and almost take pole from Heidfeld. Everytime Lotus Renault gets a podium I feel bad for Kubica. This could have been his year.

Hamilton made a costly mistake there at the end. I think his grip went out on the tires. Good trouble free race for Button. Mercedes keeping the pressure on Red Bull. Ferrari finally starting to show up and Massa able to hold off Alonso at the end.

Personally I'm glad there was no rain, it was already crazy enough with tire changes, KERS, DRS, KERS failure, DRS failure, etc

Great stuff from Di Resta. Too bad Perez went out, wasn't his fault. Good finish for Kobayashi again. Schumacher getting some points, but I guess him and Rosberg are just happy they could finish this time.

BTW, Maldonado sucks. Everytime I see this rookie driving his car is always twitching all over the place.

Damn these late races, lol

ManoNegra

Redbull sandbagging??? lol
BBC analyzed Hamilton's qualifying run and show the small mistake he made
that cost his the pole
Both Redbulls got off poorly at the start
you can easily see Vettel defeding like crazy
since their KERS is erratic
I'd like to see the evidence that Redbull favors him over Webber
he's just that good, must be driving Webber crazy

on another note, it was good to see Ferrari competitive in the race
too bad Alonso ran into the back of Hamilton near the end
Renault keeps surprising

Hamilton and Alonso handed penalties | 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix (http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2011/04/10/hamilton-alonso-handed-20second-penalties/)

Hamilton was penalised for making more than one move to defend his position. Alonso’s penalty was for making contact with the McLaren driver.

Alonso’s finishing position is unaffected by the penalty, but Hamilton drops from seventh to eighth.

That is bullshit, they where real racing.. that was a natural racing incident. They been trying to make the sport more entertaining and restore overtaking, and when something throws down, they penalize it.

Gnnr
04-11-2011, 12:58 AM

Caught the end of P1. Man, I seriously can not believe that the cars are that much slower than last year. I think all the teams are seriously sandbagging because they don't want to give anything away. A lot of psychological mind games being played by the teams. Compare to last year's times

P1 / P2 / P3
1’36.677 / 1’35.217 / 1’35.323

Q1 / Q2 / Q3
1’35.641 / 1’34.928 / 1’34.558

Fastest Lap 1’42.061 (L. Hamilton)
Record Lap 1'32.238 (M. Schumacher)

Well, this first half of the season is getting pretty boring when its not very competitive anymore. Vettel is not all that impressive when you consider his times are close to the actual times cars where running last year. To be expected considering his car isn't that much of a modification from last years.

Red Bull keeps giving Webber the shittier setup, so not surprised. They're using him as the guinea pig and doing things on his car they wouldn't dare do on Vettel's.

three great rookies
Lotus/Renault competing for podiums

It's a shame the race was interrupted, I'm not sure Vettel would have held off Alonso and Button on thrashed tires if there hadn't been a reset.

Crazy race though, lots of fun to watch. My Inlaws were visiting and had never watched an F1 race and generally couldn't care less, but we were all totally enraptured from the beginning until the end, which was cool. It's always fun to watch Monaco just because it's so tight.

Sure it rained to hard and sure there was a 90 minute wait but shit you could not have written what happened in the last 15 fifteen laps.
Seriously I have seen way to many boring dry weather races, were the lead was determined at the beginning of the race and nothing happened thereafter to change it.

This race had some great action. In the past there has been some incredible races among F1 greats that were in the rain. Today that happened again.
Thank you you can take your whiny asses home now. 15 laps of insane passes and lead change is definitely greater than 70 boring dry weather laps were Vettel would have led the whole damn race.

I will say this being able to race and pass in the rain is what separates the men from the boys in F1.

You guys are just proving you are used to watching pussy ass races were no one's ability is really challenged.

I had to switch back and forth for awhile, because I didn't want to watch 45 minutes of cars under umbrellas, but the end was great.

I wanted to see Schumi on the podium though, and I really didn't expect Kobayashi to get knocked all the way down to 7th.

great race at the end.. kinda bummed hamilton made that bonehead move in the beginning.

I too was rooting for kobayashi to fight them off. Did want to see schumacher on podium too.

I never was a Button fan before, hated when he was dominating back in Brawn GP.. but now i must say he is growing on me. He has had some solid runs. Todays race showed his talents as a smart driver.

Best race of the season, most boring race of the season, shortest, and longest race of the season, all at once. Too bad Fox coverage sucks, re-watching the BBC version was a must.

i watched the bbc pre race then figured "the fox broadcast is coming on ill watch that instead of the bbc stream" since im at a HD tv.. turned on the fox broadcast thinking they would tape delay it a little bit and include a pre-race show .. Nope, dropped us right into lap 2 or so.

I took a nap when they redflagged the race thinking "nahh they gonna call it off".. then i turned it back on later and things cleared up.

BBC might stop showing F1 altogether after 2012 or somesuch, apparently the license is much too expensive.

Eventually you're just going to pay $50/year or something to be able to stream it all from F1.com and no TV station will carry it, but that's probably a few years off.

Anyway, who's watching Valencia today? Not the most exciting circuit, but definitely one of the prettiest.

I thought Vettel raced brilliantly. He's out there in the same car as Webber, who's terrific, but he's so consistently superior in results while being so junior. He's the 21st century Hermann Lang.

That said, it was great to see the grandstands go crazy when hometown hero Alonso passed Webber, and when Alonso and Massa savaged Hamilton at the start.

I was pricing vacation rentals in Valencia while watching this, I'd never watched this GP before and I couldn't believe how pretty the circuit is. I want to go next year.

Everyone is switching to slicks now, but enough of the track is still wet for it to be a little hairy. I want to see Hamilton at least on podium, English driver for an English team at Silverstone and all that.

EDIT:

I so wanted to see Hamilton get out of the pits before Vettel, but he's on new tires and Seb's on used ones, so we'll see. Alonso is dominating, although he's on used tires also, albeit with like a 15 second lead over Vettel.

It was exciting all the way through. Pits stops really made the race, kinda sucks that there wasnt more on track passing though. Perez finally had a good race after the incident, bad luck for Kobayashi. And I wonder what will Webber do since he was asked to stay in 3rd where it seemed that he couldve passed Vettel. The ring should be fun to watch in a couple of weeks.

And I wonder what will Webber do since he was asked to stay in 3rd where it seemed that he couldve passed Vettel.

I've heard they did that because IF there had been some sort of incident when Webber trying to pass Vettel (i.e. Hamilton and Massa), there is the possibility of a very damaging points consequence to Red Bull as it involves not one but two of their drivers.

McLaren felt the curse of Silverstone for sure, with Button losing that wheel and Hamilton having to go into fuel conservation mode. I think Hamilton would've come in 2nd if it wasn't for that, as he had fresher tires than the Red Bull cars.

Yes, Redbull stated that they will not implement team orders, but it doesn't matter. After Horner told Webber to slow down, he IGNORED the command and continued to try and bring the fight to Vettel. Webber did not pass Vettel because he decided to slow down. Webber was just too slow.

Webber had the PERFECT opportunity to win the title last season and he drove like a pussy at Yas Marina.

Vettel passed Webber at the start like it was childs play.

I am not much of a RBR fan, and even less of a Vettel fan, but I will give credit when it is due.

One of the best races this season. Good to see Hamilton win but gotta feel bad for Webber, fifth time sitting on pole last 2 years he wasnt able to win. Needs to learn how to start the race.

Even if Vettel's race today is how the rest of the season will go for him it has been proven that he can still win the Championship, look at Buttons 2009 championship with Braun GP.

It allows people better chance to show their skill as opposed to being held back by their chassis designs during a dry race.

Its too tight to be competitive. And they just added more turns so I dont think it got any better. it would take a lot of skill and some luck to overtake there, therefore pole sitter has the best chance of winning. Not how F1 likes to do things, thank god.

Hamilton got robbed imo.. First he went out with the wrong tires and had to pit again, then he spun out and initiated a spin to straighten up and they saw him as being a risk to the other drivers so they gave him a drive through penalty.

it WAS a risky move. the only reason hamilton salvaged points is because di resta didn't t-bone him right there. every other driver on the grid would have waited until traffic cleared to spin around. hamilton clearly saw those two cars and decided to spin around in front of them. if you think that's okay, you better not complain about getting cut off by idiot drivers on you daily commute.
