View Full Version : Sleepy Eye Mod

I just did the DIY Sleepy Eye Mod following directions from FAQ/Installs thread.

I unplugged headlight motor wire harness, uncapped motor, adjusted light height, capped the motor, and done.

My question is: The wires are supposed to remain disconnected as long as one wishes to keep "sleepy eyes", right?

yes

why did you do all that?

All you need to do is pop hood, take the caps off the motor knob things, then twist to your liking.

Then pull fuse 5A (or is it 10A), that is labeled headlamp motor or something like that. This is in the driver side kick panel btw.

This way if you need to put your headlights back to normal just flick the high beams.

Ooh....nice!

Now here's the thing. If I tried to twist the knobs w/o unplugging the wires the motors began to twitch and click for like 3 seconds without moving the headlight up or down.

So if I attempt to do it your way. Shouldn't I first take off the fuse and then attempt to adjust the headlight height?

Also, If I accomplish the sleepy eye mod by using the fuse removal method, when I flick the high beams on the headlights will function as normal. So what happens when I put low beams back on? The lights go back to sleepy or the lights remain as normal?

OK now I will start by telling you exactly what to do in order.

1. Turn off your lights (you can turn off your car if you want, don't think I ever tried it with it on).
2. Pop your hood.
3. Twist the knobs to your liking (they shouldnt twitch).
Note: I think the reason why they twitched is becuase you tried to lower them while they were on. I think it happened to me before. Basically you are trying make them go down, while they are trying to go up.

Optional
4. Pull headlamp motor fuse in the driver side kickpanel fusebox.
Note: This will enusure that when you turn your lights to low beam/normal the motors will not move up. Although if you turn on your high beams the motor will activate and go into the normal position, and will not go back down unless you do it, or you put the fuse back in.

Another way of doing it is using your headlamp button, pull it from your guage cluster. Press the button so your headlights go all the way up. Then unplug the button, press it (while its unplugged). Then lightly plug it in, not all the way in, just enough for the headlights to go down, keep doing it till it stops where you want. Thats the best for on the go sleepy eyes :D.

But sucks cuz most motors move at different speeds and never align perfectly. That is basically how the other DIY sleepy eye mod works. The one where you get a switch and attach it to one of the wires.

The way I described first works best, I don't know how the pivot controller works. Does anyone know if it is precise or if it depends on the motor speed.

pivot depends on motor too but its very precise. i like mine alot :) none of the ghetto crap

somewhat true but why spend your money on pointless **** when you can spend it on something important and take the cheap way out. And ya there are some things that taking the cheap way out is bad, but for something as insignificant as that, I'll keep the 100 and whatever dollars.

used costs like 30some dollars smarty pants.

and if 100 dollars is TOO MUCH then you are going to hit some BIG walls when truely modifying your car. turbo? dream on.

100 dollars is too much to fix up my lights.

I figured 100 dollars cuz that is the first price I had ever seen it listed as. On like autoimaging a few years ago. I didnt really give a rats ass about making my headlights look like that.

I still don't really do it to often.

I know of all the problems that come with cars, and that is why I am nitpicky about money. I am good at saving money, and spending even 30 bucks here and there, for things that can be done for free, is a waste of money.

im a perfectionist
and i dont like tinkering around w/ my headlights w/ that ghetto setup to make them stop where i want. its a waste of time.

pivot. set to what you want. turn off headlights DONE time and time again.

$100 is not a lot for headlights fixing...H4..overpriced too for you?
HID?

Well I dont need super duper bright illegal (or soon to be) headlights. I live in Illinois, flat lands, no mountain roads where I NEED to see everything from kingdom come, I am fine with my lighting for now. But soon enough will get some brighter ones, prolly juss get the PDM ones. Probably come winter time.

And I still do believe 100 dollars is way too much for me to make my headlights stop before they get to where they are supposed to go. Its not functional (well I guess one up a bit somewhat is, but I have never been in a situation where I need that extra air).

I buy what I need first. My top priorities are getting snow tires for winter, paying for my winter vacation, replacing the bushings on my car. Then from there I can start spending money on fun stuff.

You should know how important it is to get the necessary stuff out of the way. I am sure you have replaced a lot of broken, or worn out things on your car. I am not going to waste a weeks worth of pay on some headlight stuff, when I could put that towards something that I need before a ceratin time, or something that I would prefer to have before I started pushing my car to its limits.

So now I am gonna stop rambling cuz this is a really long post:blah:

HID is illegal if its a kit that's not DOT approved.

i never said spend a hundred buck (2nd time saying that) you can buy them used often.

i never said do this dont do that. i just said i hate ghetto mod and you started to get your panties twisted

Well regardless of legal or not, I dont need that bright of lights.

I know I heard you the firs time, but I did say I still wouldnt pay 30 for it, and you said something about 100 dollars for H4 or something like that.

And what you really said was I am cheap and probably will become a future ricer.

Well I am cheap but I do care about what I put in or on my car.

Chill out... both of you.

KiDy: I suppose your "first" method is better since you can get your headlights back uo to normal with a simple flick into high's. The way I did it is identical to how you suggested except I did unplug the motors and I did not remove that fuse. So next time I feel like messing with the lights I'll try your method. We'll talk about this on Saturday...:D

Dous: I'm with KiDy on this one unfortunately... Wether it's $30 or $100, It just isnt worth it to spend cash on something that can be done for free. At least thats my personal opinion.

Noob question here...

How did you reach the fusebox? I had enough trouble simply finding it, and I'm not sure what needs to be unbolted so I can get my hands on it. I would mess around with it, but it's finals and I need to study.

Thanks for any help I can get.

he's right....that is a newbie question.

The fuse panel is where you left foot should be. Open it, look at the back of the "fuse door" and locate the 5A fuse you which to extract. Locate the fuse itsself in comparison to the "fuse door" and pull it out with the supplied fuse puller or a pair of needle nose pliars...

I cant beleive I just did a write up on Fuse Removal...

ohh...your talking about the underhood fuses...

e he he...

take your air box out, but I think thats a relay panel right? The other panel is behind your battery, which should be easily accessible.....

i think...

Too cold to go out and look...

another noob question... would that kick panel location apply to a s14 as well? i was trying to fix my fan blower which is having electrical issues. i let the resistor die too long and i think it shorted a fuse... i was under the hood checking fuses and they all worked fine... i actually didn't know there was another location for fuses... supposed to check fuses marked 15A... do you guys think it might be there? where else might this damn fuse be :X . ... too cold to search (no garage ;_;) ...thanks. b4 u ask, yes i know nothing about electrical systems except what i learned in high school physics. ^_^

i did a complete write up on this awhile back..

you can do it free without popping the hood, or taking fuses in and out...

find the switch that makes the lights pop up without turning on... and pull it out. (you should just be able to pull)

find the brown wire, and cut it...

thats it

put the switch back in, and press the button in.. nothing will happen.. then turn on your headlights, and turn them off... the lights will stay up..

then find the same switch and press it in and out quickly to get desired height...
its hella easy

pm me if you have q's

wow, dousan and kidy are really going at it about that whole light deal. that was the funniest crap i have read in a long time hahahah....... who gives a fu*k about how you get your lights to stay up. sure was funny to read about you guys bickering back and forth. and for my opinion DIY is the shit and is no where near rice. DIY proves your able to maintain your machine and make solutions on your own. now i dunno about tweaking your lights to stay up being a necessity, but say for instance you want some strut braces but are completely broke.....refine your welding skills and freaking make your own.....need a heat sheild for your clutch and break resivors get some sheet medal and effin make your own. wanna stiffin up your chasis start stitch welding....i know koguchi does all the work himself on his cars........its all up to how good your craftmanship is....if you have the skills screw paying for stuff that you can easily make yourself and sometimes even make better than if you were going to buy it.
there's my 2 cents.:)

It can still be easier, without adjusting motors or cutting wires. I just popped the lights up, then hit the button to put them down, as they're going down, pull the fuse. Depending on the timing on when you pull the fuse will determine the height. Then just unplug the motors. I dunno, I figured that is the easiest way to do it, if you're going to leave them like that all the time.

dude not everyone is bless w/ cash..

if the guy wants a free or cheap ghetto mod then let it be..

pivot is nice, but .. it is expensive. and yes 100 bucks for a electic toggle switch is expensive, but if you want it to be perfect pay the cash..

done:D

or the best ghetto way yet: find the wire coming off the fuse (light blue, like 22 gauge) and put a switch into it. then you dont have to pull anything out or do it manually. and it allows you to turn the lights on, with no need for 2 switches.

there is a very through diy switch installation on NICO. there is one that just moves the lights when off. and one that you can have the lights on while in sleepy position. search for "how to destroy pop-up lights".

on my car i made it so the lights are controled by one switch..
the switch has two ons one off..center is off...push it to the
left the left light goes up..push to right ,,right light goes up..
hold it down and the light will keep going up and down..i like
to make them wink one at a time at people..
something different..;)
