View Full Version : Keeping flywheel from rotating when installing?

Replacing the clutch on my S14 and I need to know how to torque the flywheel back down to spec without it rotating. I figured I could just use an impact wrench to remove it but can't do that to put it back on. Well I COULD but I'd rather not. Any thoughts?

stick a screwdriver in between the wheel of the starter and the teeth of the flywheel...you could use an impact gun but just be careful i broke a bolt that way lol.

Wedge something metal and firm in between one of the teeth. At least that's what I think I remember doing (it's been three years lol sorry)

well when i did it i made a huge fucking cheater bar lol. a breaker bar on the crank bolt, connected to like a ass load of long pipes and hitting the ground so it couldnt move. then i was torquing the bolts down with a torque wrench from sears. (friggen thing is digital! and beeps when its done haha pretty cool thing)

at least thats how i think i did it? its been 5 months :/

This is what I usually do.

Take one of the transmission bolts that is used to hold the bellhousing to the motor. and thread it into one of the holes on the top of the flywheel. Then take a small socket (12mm, 14mm or w/e) and wedge it in between the teeth of the flywheel and the bolt so that the flywheel cannot turn.(hold the socket in place, and start turning the flywheel till its stuck.)

This will allow you to torque each one of the bolts easily.

Hope this helps!

THIS. Used this method multiple times and it works like a charm.

uhm... grab a 22mm or w/e it is and have someone hold down the main pulley.

just block the engine with a socket in the damper pulley,i always do that ;)

or you can use a transmission bolt, put it ont the engine, and use a very strong screwdriver(or something like else) between the bolt and dent of th FW ;)

I always get like a foot of chain. Put a trans bolt through a chain link and screw it into one of the holes on top. Now put one of the pressure plate bolts thru a chain link and screw it into the flywheel. Now when you torque the flywheel bolts the chain will keep it from spinning.

^Chain works best. Very easy fool proof method.

I tried the socket trick but it wasn't working like I wanted so I busted out the chain.

I remember using some special tool that gripped the teeth. One person held that tool, while the other tightened the bolt.

Maybe you can rent that tool from somewhere.

The socket trick can also be used to break loose the flywheel bolts, just put it on the opposite side.

Like people said, the socket trick. Found a pic from an old thread here.

^^Too bad rb25 flywheel doesnt have those holes. I hope an electric impact gun will have enough power, the one i might buy can put out 250 ft/lbs??

uhm... grab a 22mm or w/e it is and have someone hold down the main pulley.

ive done this before, works if you have a long enough arm that will just hit the ground and keep it from rotating...

ALSO, if you have the tools, ive taken a piece of metal scrap, drilled a hole of the appropriate size to bolt to the where the bell housing would and cut teeth into it that capture the flywheel and stop it from turning

Or you can just have someone hold onto the front crank bolt... Takes no time to setup, you just get their lazy ass to hold it while you do the wrenching.

i know this is solved...
but food for thought..
this is how i do mine :)
clutch bolt in the flywheel
tranny bolt in the block..
...wrench.
i haven't broken a clutch bolt yet.. lol
