View Full Version : spinning tires!
hey im not a big street racer but i made some bets with someguys about drag racing and i was wondering if it is good or bad to spin tires while switching gears..like when i shift from first to second and second to 3rd. i have new tires and the car is stock, but ill be racing a 250 hp sr20 with short shifter 300zx lst and 300zx rims(8.5") and i think a spec stage 3 clutch. (my project car) so im not sure if ill turn them over in this but if so should i

Well if you are shifting fast, which you should be by when racing, you really can't help it if they chirp/spin when you shift. It just proves how powerful your car is.
But you should be able to spin them while shifting with 250hp
so does anyone else spin tires with new tires shifting into 3rd a completely stock engine or am i a super shifter ;) also im rreally bored so if anyone wants to talk IM me DMCS14
ps we are both building our cars his is a 302 powered galaxy and mine is a sr20 powered fb and we will be running legally ina few months on a track not on the street

hmm...your chirping 3rd, with a stock engine? Are you revving it up before you let go of the clutch? If not that's really good shifting. I can't even chirp 2nd in my car, damn i need a new clutch. I'd like to hear everyone else's opinion on this.
Edit-u have 250 hp that's why, still 3rd is hard to chirp.
well its more like 1 in 3 times whn im pushing it i havent perfected 2nd to 3rd and i am not revvin it up b4 hand

Chirping gears won't hurt you while driving hard unless the power is so great that you do actually spin tires. 250hp should give you no worries though as long as you have an LSD. I can chirp both second and third with my stock engine and clutch. But I have an open diff and probably wouldn't be able to do third if I had an LSD.

I can spin my 245/45/16x8 Bridgestone RE730's / FD RX7 wheels with my motor, in all the first three gears. I also have a Z32 LSD.
Pavement should also make a difference.. and tire quality, but overall.. I think clutch makes the biggest difference.

clutch makes a big difference. case and point. my car spec stage 2 (240rwhp SR) I have to be driving HARD to get it to chirp third. drove a S14 SR the other day with a Spec Stage 4 in it and it chirp second when I let out the clutch to fast, not even driving hard. (or rather as hard as I would to get MINE to chirp second like that) third and fourth both chirped easily with the Stage 4 too

You have the ability to make your car chirp a gear or not.
Anytime a wheel is spinning, or the clutch is slipping, your not getting power to the groud.
Figure out how to shift fast, without either of those, and you will be faster.

true enough but a strong grabby clutch makes it harder to NOT chirp and spin tires. :) at rockingham this weekend mine spun second alot and chirped third alot too.. and it shows in my horrible 60' times. too much wheel spin in 1st and 2nd turns a low 13 car into a mid 13 second car. spinning and shortshifting 1st with 2.3 60' times gets me 13.6 at 105mph. (yes I am the suxzor at teh dr4gstr!pa)

yeah..I have never ever spun the tires shifting into second gear, even in the rain.. (stock KA)
My clutch isnt incredibly grabby, but my tires are. Plus having a VLSD doesnt seem to help. I drop the clutch from about 2500 rpm for perfect launch and usually shift around 6500 rpm, although compared to some cars ive driven, the 240 doesnt seem to eager to let you slam it through the gears.

4th yup in two different cars. mine and jason (sleepysr or something like that on here) Jasons did it when his ACT was new. and mine is kinda iffy. i think its road dependant.

When I get my KA24DE I'll race ya David. See who the better driver is. I knew you shifted damn fast but chirping third? You must show me. I knew a guy in a Celica that barely chirped third completely stock, but he wasnt going completely straight. Now I did know a guy, and I think David raced him, had an H22 Integra and could extend his burnouts all the way thru 5th gear. Looked cool but of course all that and hes not going anywhere.
ya but after u buy a ka my sr will be running

I had a bone stock 85 nissan truck that I could get 4th if it was even mildy damp.. It had a heavy duty clutch rated for a lot more power than it had.
I can chirp 3rd in my GF's Spec-V. Foot in the floor (keep it there), hit clutch, shifter from 2-3, let revs rise about 1000rpm, dump clutch,.. "CHIRP"
Not the fastest way, but fun.. :coolugh:

mildly damp makes me drive like a granny. I stay out of boost as much as possible. every tire i've had on the rear since the SR install has came loose at the top of second if the ground has been spit on. I spun all through second yesterday (driving a 5 speed one handed and a FOCUS wanted to race. i shifted to second at like 2500 and popped second and spun tires untill I let out (after passing the fukus thoroughly)

My friend can chirp his 600hp AWD with LSD
When I had my M3 i could make em spin in 2nd pretty easily, but my tires were not in great shape. I got 3rd once, thats with 250 flywheel hp and lsd.
