Estimated average time is 7.5 hours. You need to make sure you take it to a shop who can do everything. Not somebody who will outsource the machine work, because it can take longer to get the vehicle back and the price might be higher.
I do it myself $25 to have the head resurfaced and $75 for a Felpro Gasket set.
I did go with a Cometic gasket one time and that by itself is $100, but its true....they dont last. It blew 8 months later.
It is a pain in the ass to set your timing right especially if you have a dual cam. So if your not mechanically inclined dont bother.
Call some good local shops to you and see what you get quoted? Im guessing between $350 to 500 depending on the shop.

coming from a dealership, its 10.8 hours without ac. If you have ac add 0.4 hours. SO if your figureing $100 an hour your spending a grand to do it. Im literally doing it rite now (for the 4th time, 3 others weren't my car) and its not that hard if you have an idea how it all works. The timing chain will throw you off for a good 2 hours, and if your smart, youll just take the exhaust cam gear off to pull the cams to get to the head bolts. Like Zenkidrift said, do yourself a favor and buy arp head studs unless your running stock n/a. If your boosted then buy them or your going to hate yourself(165-5401 is the part number from ARP). Yes they will be the 1.6L saturn ones(says it on the box). OEM GASKET IS THE BEST(or felpro). Dont bother with a cometic, it will fail, ka's eat them for dinner. If you do it yourself, take your time and make sure you dont mix up bolts. If you need any help just google it or use ka-t.org. If you need any other help feel free to pm me, ill help out where i can (i cheated and have alldata as a short crutch)

alot of shops will do it for around 900
its super easy tho, that was the first thing i ever did to my 240, i just put each set of bolts into lables baggies, made pictures and diagrams of what i took apart. labled EVERYTHING and used a good write up.
so maybe 3 days and you get to learn how to do it and spend maybe 300 bucks.
or spend 900 and wait over a week probly.
just a thought best of luck.
