I heard that you can buy 300zx calipers from AutoZone,
and pay the core charge with your old 240sx calipers.
True or False?

How about you go to your AutoZone and ask THEM.:bash:

advance autoparts - 91' z calipers - ~$75
I turned my 240sx calipers in for the core, no questions asked.
I would recommend buying the loaded calipers though. They come with all the accessory hardware, like pins, and clips that you need.

My friend went to autozone and asked if they would take 240sx brakes to get the core charge back if he ordered 300zx brakes and their response was no (Durrr).
Sykikchimp is right though. I doubt they will care as long as you don't make a big deal about it.

The way I did it:
Order bare 91 alum. 30mm Z calipers from Advance Autoparts (~140)
Order Z rotors from cobaltfriction.com (~$52 ea.)
Order Axxis Ultiamtes from cobalt friction (~$50 front set)
Order Conversion lines from projectsilvia.com (~$100)
Order 1 quart ATE Super Blue from wherever ($10)
Order Pad Pins, Pad pin clips (I used wire binding from a notebook twisted around through the pins to hold them in), and Spring clips from local dealer (~$60) (can get these from pdm-racing.com. when I got my stuff from Nissan, most these parts were on national backorder.)
Total: ~$464
Thats for 30mm calipers and all premium, track worthy equipment.
I'm probably going to pick up set of dedicated track pads, and rotors in the near future.. another set of the cobaltfriction rotors, and probably Carbotech Panther+ pads.
Note - If you have speed bleeders on your stock calipers, they will work in the Z calipers as well. Just need some of that teflon tape, or the thread sealant. If you want to buy some .. $22 from PDM.
so.. ~$488

so you guys just hand them the 240 ones w/out saying anything hoping they wont notice or bother to check?

I just returned them in the original 300zx boxes after I was done. No questions asked.

They don't really look at it. They just make sure that there's some in there. Something that would look like some calipers...
If more people start doing this, I'm going to start doing it too because I'm a follower. hhahahahahha But, I'm just wondering what happens when the core gets to the factory or whatever and they find that the caliper isn't a 300Z caliper. I mean.. they have your information or they usually ask for some information when you buy things that have a core on it. So the question is.. is it a great cheap idea, or are we just looking for some trouble?
I'm still going to do it anyways... SCREW THE MAN!!!

woah sykikchimp that's a lot of money
my total z32 front setup cost me 200 bucks. lines pads rotors and all..nuts!

dousan, your always the exception. :hammer:
I have all new, or reman parts with warranties.
Sure you could do it cheaper, but I need reliability. When I step on the brakes at 120mph, I need to KNOW I will stop, or I hit a wall.
Those are all retail prices too. You can get that stuff cheaper if you look.
The 240sx Cores are worth just as much as the 300zx cores. So I wouldn't think they would care.

i work at an auto parts store in the bay area. to tell you the truth no one knows what the hell you buy , so returning some calipers in a box is all i need. as long as there are calipers in there i wont know the difference. i dont really care. i got my calipers from work at $75 each, but my gf bought them for me as a present. i just returned the cores and my manager saw, he didnt care. ive done this with a couple of my friends here, but not at the $75 price <~~~ my employee discount. my work has not heard any complaints from the manufaturer, so i guess its all good. the warehouse that i get the calipers from usually have them every 2 weeks.
so if you goto any auto parts store, if you want aluminum 30mm, just ask for 91 z32 calipers.

Doing the rears will be the same as the front, but you lose the e-brake. Making the e-brake work is a big PITA.... my friend Brenden didn't think it was worth it (the e-brakes), and just carries a block of wood around.
Personally, I highly suggest doing the rears when you do the fronts. IMO, keeping brake bias proportionate is a big deal. Understeering deep into a corner sucks.

speaking of brake bias, I have been wondering what 300zx brakes up front would do with the puny stock brake's in the the rear of a serious track car. I would have to believe that the front brakes would have to lock up well before the rear. there for ruining the stock brake bias. If it is a noticable difference, I would like to know. (a brake bias controller would fix that issue if it is an issue)

Why do you always bring up the fact that you don't pay very much for your parts? Since none of us here can feasibly use your sources really whats the point?

The Front brakes would lock first with the normal setup.
I have this setup with stock rear brakes and have no problems with this at all. I have porterfield r4-s pads in the rear, and axxis ultimates in the front. The ultimate have a touch higher temperature range, and grap a bit more, but still have no problems with touchy front brakes.
*removed what I'm not 100% sure of...*
I will be upgrading to the 1" Z MC though. I have a couple inches in the top of the pedal that are squishy. Can't get rid of it. It appears a 300zx MC might correct the issue. Especially since I'm pretty sure s14 silvia K's ran the 4-pot calipers, and stock rear brakes with the 1" MC.

Well, I hope your friend isn't using the car as a daily driver. I would hate to come out of a store and see couple of guys pushing my car away...

I've got almost the same setup as Charles, but I've got the Porterfield R4S all around as they seem to be a bit more rotor-friendly than the Axxis Ultimates.
I've only had 'em on for a couple of months, so I can't speak for their performance when January cold yet, but the only time I've run into bias problems (yep, fronts lock early) is if the brakes are cool. If I've been cruising around for a bit without really using the brakes and get on them hard and fast the fronts will catch for a beat but a slight reduction in pedal pressure brings things back in line. Once the pads/rotors are warm I can nail the brakes much harder without worrying about lockup.
I'll probably change the MC before long, or I may go to S14 rear calipers first. IIRC they have a slightly larger piston than the S13 ones and the bias/pedal feel is a bit better even with the stock MC.

What I want to know, is are the autozone z32 calipers actual nissan calipers like Blue240sx's signature? Or are they just a generic caliper?

i always help somoene out when they ask
just saying if you look A LOT and talk with people who have them (hint: z32tt owners) you can get them VERY cheap!!!
rotors were free from a z32tt owner, pads came w/ calipers from a guy who did big brake upgrade!

The A1-carbine, or whoever they come from at the parts store are REMAN Nissan calipers. Yes. they look exactly like the ones in his sig, except they aree just aluminum, no paint.
Gotta paint them yourself.

they are all remanufactured. meaning they have just been rebuilt by some manufaturer, like a1 Cardone or AC Delco. but no mater where or who reman'd them they're all nissan calipers
