I can't decide, personally. I always think I'm going to save a majority of it, but always end up spoiling myself with car parts.

What are you going to do with your tax return?!

udon!

Baller clothes and car parts.

I want to save most of it but that won't happen. I'm moving in a few weeks so I'll be buying stuff for my new place and for my car I will get a rollcage and a paint job.

Spend it ALLL on paying off my DD and maybe one of my smaller student loans. Two less monthly bills means more money to spend on my money pit.

Fly my wife back from Japan. Right before I got sent to Afghanistan in September, I sent her home on a nonstop Japan airlines flight from SFO->Narita for 850 bucks. I looked around a few weeks ago for a nonstop flight from Narita->SFO in mid April when I get back, and the cheapest I can find is 2300 bucks. Bye bye tax return

I am kinda lost on filing tax returns since I am in college. I will be doing them online and is there a special form for students? Or is it like a question they ask on them? If anyone would know I would appreciate it!

Finish up my s13, if i dont sell it before then. (unlikely)

Put it towards buying a spot down in Baja. (best investment in the long run)maybe.

shit, she convinced me. i don't think she needs them but she really wants them and i think it'll make her happier. it's the least i can do because she never even bats an eyelash at the amount of money i put into the project car. plus the way i figure it, in a year when i get out of the military we'll be debt free, i'll have my s14 done, and she'll have her jugs...beats having to pay for those things later on down the road when we might not be as fortunate.

That's not his point. If you are getting $5k-10k back on your taxes, that means your withholding is all screwed up. Ideally you should get a small refund back, because the correct amount of taxes were withheld throughout the year. Or, if you are ambitious and like risks, you don't have any taxes withheld, invest that money throughout the year, and then, when tax season comes round, you cash out and pay the gov't and keep any profits.

thats not true at all because you have to take into account married people filing joint, earned income credit, child credit, child care credit, deductions etc etc. i can your logic/statment (about the amount being returned) applying to the middle class single person...but thats about it.

Not true. The withholding worksheet allows you to take all of that into consideration. If you are single with no kids, you will probably only have only 1-2 exemptions. If you are married, filing jointly, with 2 kids (like me), with a mortgage (deducting mortgage interest), you will likely have 6-7 exemptions on your W-4. The number of exemptions adjust your withholding from your paycheck. If you are getting a $10k tax refund, your withholding was too high, and you need to adjust your W-4 to get your withholding in check.

IRS Withholding Calculator (http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96196,00.html)

You enter in your salary, your tax status (single, married, # of dependents etc), estimated deductions, amount currently withheld for taxes, and it estimates your yearly tax burden and suggests the number of exemptions to meet that burden.

You don't get a $10k check for having a kid. He was talking about a specific person who has way too much money withheld and so gets a giant refund. You get a flat $1000 tax credit per child. So if you normally owed $5000 in taxes, and then you have a kid, then you would owe just $4000.

You can also get a credit for child-care, if both parents work and pay for child-care, then you can get a credit that depends on your salary and how much you paid in child care. The maximum you can get is maybe around $1000 if you paid over $5000 in child care expenses. This credit is not affected by the number of children you have, it is capped at $5000 in expenses that can be used. So if you had 2 kids, and day-care cost $7k per kid for a year, you would get the same credit as if you had only 1 kid. Even though you are paying $14k/year in child-care, only $5k of that expense goes towards the credit.

thank you for clarifying what TNathe didn't understand. anyway in all honesty i didn't know what you mentioned. i guess its something to look into. each year we get around 6-8k on our federal refund including all the credits/deductions. are we losing money this way vice what you're talking about?

i kinda actually prefer the big lump sum (unless you get more money by making an adjustment). the way i see it is we don't need the little extra each month and it's kind of cool to get a giant check once a year.

slamburger
01-28-2011, 03:36 PM
If you don't need the lil extra each paycheck then keep it the way it is. Maybe the lil extra could go towards a nice high interest savings...then after a year it will be more then a tax return. Food for thought :)

Your withholding has no bearing on what you end up paying in taxes. You won't end up paying more or less by adjusting your withholding. Your total tax burden for the year is calculated when you do your 1040. Withholding is simply a way of saving for your tax payment. However, if you are getting $8k back every year, that's over $600 a month that you could be used for something else, investing, saving, or putting into an IRA for retirement. If you are bad at keeping a budget, and would otherwise just spend that money, you may choose to keep your withholding where it is and use it as automatic savings. You could take your big fat return and turn it into a big fat check that you deposit into your IRA. Keep in mind that it is in essence an interest-free loan to the government. They are holding onto thousands of dollars of your money throughout the year, and you aren't getting any return on it.

Many banks allow you to setup an automatic transfer between bank accounts. So instead of having the government hold onto your money, you can get it in your paycheck, and then setup an automatic transfer of $600 every month from your checking account into your savings account. That way, you can earn some interest (however little), and still have the flexibility to use it.

I use it. Use to use TaxCut, but it has morphed into TaxCut Online, now H&R BLock Online over the years. It's relatively easy and inexpensive. My only real complaint is that it is always confusing on how to report my wife's income, since her income is reported on a 1099-MISC instead of a W-2, and it is usually not obvious where to enter that info. Usually takes 2-3 hours from start to finish, including carefully going back through it to double check.

I think you can go through it and try it out for free. I am pretty sure they don't handle payment until you go to file. So you can enter in all your info and see if you like it before paying.
