does anybody know of an aftermarket knock meter thats affordable.
besides the big brand like the HKS AFK.
trying to search for something like this with the flashing lights: Knock Sensor Monitor - Turbo and High-Tech Performance Magazine (http://www.turbomagazine.com/tech/0703_turp_knock_sensor_monitor/index.html)
or with number values.
ive seen cheaper ones that you have to monitor with headphones.
but im researching for something more practical that you can monitor on the fly, especially if you're tying to do a street tune.

does a lean air/fuel directly correlate to knock?

Don't bother.... you can go to phormula digital knock in the UK. That is where I got mine. I have the RS-4 model. I can sell you mine if you want it....
I have one that was like 400 bux... but avast its useless. You would need a damn good ecu to read the knock then print it out in a singular graph and correlate yourself to a specificed A/F to a Specific RPM and to a Specific Fuel Cell.
Also your A/F reading pre-cat is a RESULT of the meature, meaning you can't repeat the result 100% of the time. Also your A/F meter lags irregardless, so by the time you actually get that reading, think about how many cycles have ALREADY past in your engine before you get that reading. That is why load bearing, steady state, break eddy tuning like DynoDynamics is so much better. You can put a load on the engine, keep it at a steady RPM, and tune for that specific fuel/load cell... Its sexy....

In the end don't waste your money, I did and it was a fucking waste of money. Spend the 400 on a real tune, you will be happier and safer.... Seriously.....

You can make your own. that is the cheapest. Google it. I was planning to make one but I never had a chance to start the project.
Currently I use HKS Knock meter

Absolutely!!! Outrageous high cyl temps, Will melt your pistons .Keep A/F in check ,Rather run rich!

I know A/F ratio reflects EGT/CHT... but its not clear to me if you can clearly monitor knock through A/F ratios in relation to timing advance

I don't think you should cheap out on a knock meter. I mean... A measured knock count of 20 vs 30 is a big difference. If a cheap knock meter is spitting out low numbers when they are actually high, you may screw yourself out of more than just a $400 meter..
I like the headphones. That's what my tuner used.
Take slider's advice into consideration. He has plenty of track time.
Edit: AFR and Timing don't have near as big a correlation as Knock and Timing. So no, you need both AFR and knock readings to properly tune. Even with an AFR, an EGT will help you determine if 12.1 AFR is still not rich enough to keep EGT in check.
Be sure to keep an eye on H20 Temp, Oil Temp (OFTEN NEGLECTED....), and Oil Pressure.
Tuning is a huge subject. I didn't even chip the ice with what I said.
