hi, i have a 98 240, the engine light is on, i NEED to do a smog ASAP... i went to some shop to do a check, they pluged in the ECU and found out it was the MAP sensor, supposely its really easy to install, but as a beginner i know NOTHING about it, i'm afraid that they might over charge me, i was wondering if anyone would be kind to help me out on this topic or even help me install if you live around Los Angeles area...or know any good mechanics around LA area... thanks

BTW the MAP sensor is like $160 for part only.

MAP sensor or MAF sensor.

there is a MAP/BORO switch right on the fender wall where the intake manifold is.

Umm..... Does the KA even have a MAP(Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor? MAP sensors are primarly used with speed-density based metering systems and the KA is MAF(Mass Air Flow) based, not speed-density. It can't be a MAFS they are talking about if it's only $160 new, MAF sensors are over $300 new. Hav you noticed yoru car running any differntly? If so what are the symptoms? Go to a couple of other places and have them check your ECU. Autozones do it for free. I believe Murry's does as well.

These places plug in the diagnostic scanner into the port.. which won't check our ECU's code (unless they have the really, really special scanner). Go to the FAQ and read the code yourself. Takes about 10 mins. Then come back and post what code popped up.

i just looked at the car, 97 and 98 obdII has a MAP sensor used for emission reasons and to check other sensors and working conditions of the motor. you can disconnect it and the car will run perfectly fine.

I have the same check engine light for that in my car. its like code 25 or something.

ok since i have autozone scanned my car (my service engine soon light was on) the code was p0105 which was a "barometric pressure sensor" I assume that is the same thing as a MAP sensor. so where is it at on the engine bay, i dont know what it looks like.
