I feel they're necessary due to the level of ignorance that most people display.

eh, necessary evil. i don't like when movie studios pussify what could have been a decent R movie to get a PG13, for better ticket sales. but this usually only happens to retarded action movie sequels that shouldn't have been made in the first place.

i think its there so the studios protect themselves from sue-happy parents.

in practical terms for ppl in general it changes nothing really.
so easy to stream and download anything these days.
