Ace Up / Elevens' S13.4 Pro-am build up

here we go. So this car was started about 2 years ago after the first SR in it blew. its owned by my friend Vitaly of Ace Up Motorsports (.com) here in Phoenix AZ. first as usual he stripped the car and then built the cage.

the chassis is tubbed and has a Ace Up fabbed rad /intercooler/ lights support for V-mount

the motor is a built SR
new bearings, CP pistons, Eagle rods, gaskets, ARP studs, greddy pulleys, freddy intake mani, other stuff like custom water inlet, alot of AN and little fabbed bits

at this time it was running a t28 w/ full race manifold, though recently we switched to a Evil Engineering top mount and new gt28r with diff exhaust housing. those guys make seriously awesome manifolds, comparable if not better than Full-Race units

motor went in for the first time since the rebuild and chassis build, this was around august of 2010.

custom V-mount with under 10 inches of charge piping, Tail Full-Race edition BOV, z32 MAF, Ace Up Motorsports wire tuck, and valve cover / intake manifold paint by Elevens" paint & fiber. also some help with TIG welding by Eric of Brewed Motorsports

ok so the full race mani was ok, but Evil Engineering thought they could do better. so they made their own manifold just for this car, all AN turbo lines and new intake.

Yeah the pimping just gets put on hold until needed again. Thanks for all the compliments, especially awesome to me are the compliments on the paint since I did that part. The vision for the cars buisiness like look was all vitalys though, we just helped make it happen. Super proud to have our stickers on the car and excited for what 2011 brings. u are correct as mine isnt even connected. i got it for super cheap and then read i needed a MSD tach adapter and said screw it. I have a rev limiter on my powerfc and thats all i need.

so i definitely miss my tig welder, but thank god for my awesome sponsor Evil Engineering for helping me out on this cover. basically used a s14 sr cover and mated the s13 front half on. s14 covers have superior baffling abilities compared to the 13. and i think its pretty rad.

only thing is left to weld some -10 fittings, get some paint on it and give it to a local 240/tattoo artist for some airbrush work.

also the car went on a diet this week. so a bunch of stuff got cut out and ill post some pics. starting to slowly go over everything before round 1 and hopefully will be able to pick up some tires out from cali soon!

threw on my hood. eye balled it for a minute, drilled a big hole where i thought the center point of the intercooler would be. looked inside the hole i drilled. put a reference dot with a marker on the intercooler. lifted my hood. measured the distance from reference point to the endtanks. measured the distance from top to bottom and and pushed it up the hood 2 inchs so its not completely vertical. closed the hood. drew the lines off my measurements. hacked it up with a 4 inch cutoff wheel/dremel. stared at it for a bit. decided i wanted to add a second vent for the oil cooler. so cut down 2 inchs. then took some flat sheet aluminum and cut it out to size. and tack welded. sprayed it BBQ black then proceeded to "sticker bomb" it. and then BAM! i made a duct that doesnt look like all the other cookie cutter vents people rivet on their hoods. :)

Had Kelly Banks come by and bring his scales to weigh the car and corner balance. the good is the car is lighter then i thought. the bad my right rear would have to sit like 2 inchs higher to level so i said fuck that. the car could have saved some weight if i didnt use the 1.75 x .120 tubing for the cage. Fluids Changed, a quick session to shake off some rust is all thats left before irwindale. Iam stoked to drive that track for the first time! Make sure to come out and say whats up to us at Irwindale Round 1. we'll have some rad shirts and stickers!

so little update on how round 1 went at Irwindale.
got there early friday morning. unloaded the car off the trailer and passed tech with flying colors. felt like i was the only one that had an sr around.got anxious to drive went out. first run spun on the bank and grazed the wall. 2nd run didnt commit 100% and smacked the wall with the rear coming off the bank. got all sad and dissappointed. forgot my balls at home, but thankfully my friends found them for me and second practice session was better. fought understeer like no other thanks to some sweet old nexens.. got some decent runs in by the end of friday nothing great..

drivers meeting they told us they wanted all the body panels attached and didnt care what it took to get it done. so a box of selftapping screws and zipties the car looked good as new...

practice went well swapped the front tires around and understeer issue went away. played around with a couple different lines on the bank to try to stay up high. Qualifying came around in no time. car was ready to rock. i was ready to roll. watched some guys run before me and gauged on what i should do on my runs. finally it was my turn, went out and did a conservative run, nothing crazy but fairly smooth i thought. 2nd run tried to push it a bit too much with speed and spun. Was pretty confident that i would be able to sneak in with my first run. drivers meeting rolled around aaaaannnnd.... tied for 16th and 17th place, so they averaged both qualifying runs and i lost since i spun. party foul. The Upside i was 4th fastest coming off the bank in qualifying.. So hung out and started watching the tandem practice session and then saw that the guy who i tied with broke. i quickly tried to get a hold of one of the xdc officials to see if i could sneak into his spot since he couldnt go anymore, but unfortunately was quickly denied. but anyways had lots of fun, learned alot and cant wait for round 2 in Phoenix!

due to financial and work circumstances, we couldnt get the car ready for Vegas, but have had a lot of progress so far. I decided to go with a GT3582R instead of the PHR turbo and utilize a tiny T4 Single scroll .58 exhaust housing. to release backpressure, I kept the dual wastegate setup on the twinscroll manifold. Got my fuel rail in and some Delphi 880cc injectors this weekend. Waiting for the ECU, Clutch, and other small stuff to come in so we can get this thing ready for the next vegas event!

Oh boy where do i even begin?! These past couple months have been pretty rough with a lot of ups and downs for us and the car. But slowly things have been working themselves out. After Evil Engineering (RIP) finished up with the fabrication work, i yanked the motor out for the final assembly. Enjuku Racing and SPEC Clutch hooked us up with their stage 3+ Kit, which is the only clutch that can handle large amounts of Tq and maintain a soft pressure pedal:boink: ( I hate clutches that feel like the actual pedal assembly will break off while depressing)

Before throwing the engine back into the car, I wanted to make sure the Trans tunnel would allow enough clearance to pull the much larger R154 tranny out with motor in. So I ended up taking my stress out on the tunnel with a sledge hammer. 20 mins later i made enough room for a fat woman to fit between the trans and the tunnel. After that was done, I used some Low Solid aluminum mounts my friend Dan made for me to bolt the motor up as low and as far back as possible without cutting into the subframe. In theory it would be awesome but in practice it put my oilpan a good inch lower then everything else underneath the car.:fawk2:.. Luckily the JZ Pick ups arent like SR ones where they are a cunt hair away from touching the pan itself.. Either way Ill eventually build a rally Style Undertray for it.. Next came the wiring.. I hate extra wiring and when you lose the Twins, there is a lot of extra wiring.. On top of that some famous JZ conversion shop got a hold of the harness before me and extended it 3ft for no reason. So when i went to lay out my harness I had a rainbow colored anaconda in my passenger compartment.:barf: so after too many hours My friend Efrain and I gutted and shortened the harness back to original length. At this point AEM Electronics decided to join the team and provided us with the Series 2 Box and all the needed sensors

After the wiring was squared away, I moved on to the fuel system, and ran -8 Aluminum Hardline split into dual-6 feeding Delphi 890cc Injectors and used -6 for return. At this point i was pressed against time and wanted to make it to Vegas so i kept the stock tank. The hardlines were a pain in the ass and i would definitely recommend going with AN Flexhose. A week prior to Rd 3, me and a couple of friends worked on the car nonstop for 36 hours to button up all the Plumbing and all the small to stuff to try to make it to a local event to shake the car down with a street tune. 4 hours before the event it was finally time to fire the car u...Plenty of fuel, no spark. At this point i was delirious and wanted to throw things at the car, but after 45 mins of going back thru the harness i pinpointed the the problem to the ignitor. Luckily had another one laying around, threw that one on..No go.. Long story short took 4 hours to realize the ignitor was pinned backwards :bowrofl: At that point i had given up on trying to drive it.. Sooo yeah the following week i spent majority of the time trying to work out all the small kinks and stuff but decided with no seat time behind the new powerplant RD3 vegas was a scratch.. But it will be ready to terrorize all those silly sounding V8's in a bit..:fawk: so stay tuned.. Since I hate gauges and wiring My friend Dan hooked me up with this fully customizable TunerView RD1 with the AEM Inteface..

Found some time and put the front end back on. One of my OEM headlights fell off a shelf and shattered the glass, so i had to settle with some cheapies. The back housings of them are substantially much larger so i had to cut them out to fit. Still needing a legitimate tune. First time we tried to give it a street tune it started to break up really bad at 6lbs. Found out all 6 of the coilpacks were cracked. Fixed that issue. But now i want a real tune, not to found off flying up and down the freeway in unregistered car. We got a local event on the 27th that i will try to make it out and see how the car feels. If all goes well I definitely want to make it out to texas. It would be pretty sweet to drive with all the texas dudes!

Some small updates.. Took the car to get a conservative tune while i adapt to new drivetrain. on 91 at 15lbs the car made 459whp at 6000/430wtq at 3850.

Then went to a local drift event and have no proof of being there.. But did get a chance to try the car out.. the R154's are pretty notchy and 2-3 upshifts and downshifts tend to take a bit longer then im used to.. I do need to try MTL 90 instead of whatever i put in there. 2nd gear in the car is useless. 3rd gear is beast mode.. Also tried out the Future Fab Knuckles combined with one big spacer on the passenger side and a little tein one on the drivers.. At full lock my tires rub on the frame rails and the steering wheel gets pretty violent.. Maybe try a smaller tire? Currently a 235/40/17 on a 17x9.5 -15. I could only imagine how horrible it would be on my 18's. Suspension definitely needs improving.. the 8k springs in the front combined with no swaybar is making the car an oversteering cadillac up front:wiggle:. so going to invest in a sway bar that fits and if that doesnt help go with some 10k springs. Overall i like it and with some small tweaks i think i can get it to where i want it!!

those are the only ones i have. the line going to the rear brakes is replaced up to the union split at the firewall on passenger side.

well had another shake down event that went much much better then the first. I initially wanted to step up to 10k front springs or get a sway bar that fits. But unfortunetely due to financial circumstances i couldnt do either in time. So i said F*ck it and went out anyways.. Firebird Raceway had a 3 track layout which was sick. I just stuck to the Extended XDC course all night... Couple runs in i started to get a good grasp on how the car was handling.. the pivot point of the transitions moved from the center of the car with the sr to the front of it with the 2j.. Which at first i wasnt really liking the snappy transitions but through out the night i started digging it more and more. Also started to get used to the slower shifting trans. Then realized down shifting to 2nd was never even needed. Installing the Future Fab Knuckle kit (http://aceupmotorsports.com/products/Future-Fab-Dangle-Kit-S13%7B47%7DS14.html) also helped out alot. I will however move my rack forward to eliminate the steering wheel shake from over centering.One Big thing I need to do for next year is attain a tire sponsorship, because running anything less then a 255 in the rear is a joke. Overall super pumped about the car and how it feels and cannot wait to drive more next year. no more car building. just driving..:boink:

I used AIT fenders for the conversion. The fitment is meh but they are definitely strong fenders.. They even came with all the brackets needed for install if you still have the stock core support.

Dang, its been a while since Ive updated this thread. Ive been super busy with our online store, so we havent done much changes to the car. We just got back from Vegas Pro Am Round 1 and had a blast. We left AZ on friday and made it out to U-Drift to test out a wider tire and possibly mess around with the toe in. After doing a couple runs I decided I felt comfortable with the setup as it was, so from there it was just giving friends ride alongs and making up my own clipping points in my head to create a challenge on such a wide open lot.

Saturday rolled along and woke up super early to head to the track, felt super pumped about my chances. The course was layed out perfect for higher horsepower cars and got the hang of it pretty quick. Qualifying time came around, and I wanted the Retaks Insane Entry award pretty bad.. All day i practiced just feinting it in before the cones and it worked out great and I was confident I could do it much more aggresively. But for some dumb reason I didnt even bother to really warm up the new tires before lining up for my 1st run. So on my entry I ended up flicking it a bit to hard and dropped my rear tires off course, stayed on it and layed a decent rest of the run. After my run my spotter told me the judges deducted points for my stupid entry, so at that point I just wanted to lay down a super smooth run. As i was waiting in line for my 2nd pass the car decided to just die. so unfortunately We couldn't get it to start in time and I got a 0. After cursing at myself for the next 30 minutes they called us for the top 16 announcement. I figured if I did qualify it would be in the 12th-16th position. Well they named everyone off and not me, At that point i was bummed and wanted to quit life. Then the announcer stated they were having computer errors and not everyone's score was calculated. So after another 5 minutes of waiting they re announced the top 16 and i ended up 16th with a score of 73.x off my first run. At that point i got pretty pumped and was paired off with Garret Nikolich a local Vegas driver piloting Wangs S13.4 with a 1j in it. I knew he put down super smooth runs all day but felt I had a faster car. So on my follow run my goal was to stay close and just real him in right at the part where the judges were watching most. Unfortunately when we we started to transition together I let off for a split second and the car just swung the other way and that was that:/ My lead run I had nothing to lose and wanted to put down a solid fast line with angle and hope for the best.. but it was too little to late as Garret made a clean pass following me and went on to finishing 2nd!

Event showed me I definitely have to spend more time practicing pacing slower cars, I started playing around with left foot braking a bit to and just overall different styles and techniques. The car feels great and I dont think I want to do any major changes but maybe some new paint. Next up is XDC Round 1 and 2 in AZ and then Round 2 for Vegas! The combination of a loose connection to the kill switch and and ignitor kept the car from starting. Thanks for all the good comments guys! Appreciate it a lot!

Due to the JZ motor sitting so low with our custom brackets, we wrecked the oil pan on some rumble strips at a local event. Thanks to our friend Kelly Banks for getting us a pan, and our awesome friends at Future Fabrication we made a custom pan with 1/8th inch steel plate on the bottom to protect from any rumble strip encounters!! I lost about 3/4 of a quart of oil but it is made up with a larger oil cooler I plan to run along side an accusump system.

Had fun but with No tire mounting on site I wasted a brand new set in 20 minutes. Seriously drifting expense has doubled since doing the swap. Feel pretty bad for my girlfriend :o Gotta fix a bunch of stuff before Next months XDC in Phoenix, Rear Trans seal is blown, Shifter bushings are crap, Oil cooler is leaking, and also have to install the new 10k springs that Mr. Stewie Leask sent me :) Also wanting to get some drop spindles in the rear because the car sits like a sky scraper :hey: and I dont want screw the geometry any more then it is.

PS. If you guys watch the video try to guess why my buddies White Hatch hollows so loud. Been doing it since day one and we cannot figure it out! Rocks a dual 4 inch Isis Exhaust.

Night and day, right? R154 is a notchy son of a gun. SR trans feels like you can pull the lever in any direction and it will go into gear.

Spoke with a couple more advanced drivers that use the r154 some said they didnt use any bushings, (which felt like complete Turd), so I opted with getting the Marlin Crawler Bushing kit and man its night and day difference. Definitely recommend it to any of the dudes trying to use the r154.

Food for thought man. The R154 is definitely a pig of a tranny, anything to make it smoother would kick ass. My issue now is whether to drive what I have now, or build up a track slut...

Well I got back from Vegas rd 2. Qualified 10th and finished 7th (I think) I still suck but the car is definitely feeling better with every event. I finally ditched the Federal 595SS and got some 615k's in the front. Then I added the front Sikky Bar so my car once again has front and rear sway bars. Here are some vids from the great 8 battle that i eventually lost :/ those damn Green car gang has had my number this year as they are the only ones that have eliminated me in every competition this year. I guess as long as its not a v8 doing it Iam satisified! :)
