Er, bushings, rather. I did a search, found pages and pages of useless information (but now can identify a pineapple), and now am asking...
HAS ANYONE CHANGED THEIR BUSHINGS LATELY?? and, am I going to want to hang myself from my electic seatbelt when I undertake the project on Sunday? I have done the rear control arms on a civic before, and hated life for the duration. I am PRAYING that my s13 won't put up that much of a fight.
I want to go poly, and don't particularly care what brand, I just know that mine are shot from, er, misuse, and need to be replaced. I am doing the entire car. Any tips gleaned from experience would be most appreciated.
And don't tell me to take it to a mechanic. NO ONE fondles my baby but me.

how are you going to press the bushings in?... do you have a bushing presser? it'll make ur life a ton easier for like $60 more. personally i am replacing as many as possible for metal pillowball bushings, and metal bushings(started w/ t/c rods and i'm goign with greg dupree subframe spacers). then use poly for everythign else

I'm looking to get something like this. Just have to be sure to find one that I can fit my rear subrame on.

240Dave> haha that "press" being sold on Horror Fright err, Harbor Freight kinda sucks.. I pressed my TC rod bushings out of that thing a few years back and the press felt like it was going to explode.. its really rickety and the quality sucks donkey balls. I guess it can do the job, but I warn you all now.. if you want it done WITHOUT a bushing exploding up your ass, I suggest spending the extra on a better quality press. Unless of course, you ENJOY bushings exploding up your shvantz.
Changing bushings is not fun, its not quick, and you will curse and sweat like a pig doing this kind of work. You may want to find a local shop that you can DROP the arms, knuckle, and other various suspension components at.. and pay to have them press out the old bushings. Putting the new bushings back in is cake, doesnt take a press.. EXCEPT for the TC and possibly the subframe bushings (never did the latter).
Me? I did it the hard way: blow torch, hammer, saw, and a good STRONG-HAND on the vice! Why, you ask? Because no one fondles my baby but Jenne.

Thanks for the heads up old_s13. If it could hardly do tc rod bushings theres no way I'd trust it do do subframe bushings.
Do you know of other compaines that make a decent press for not too much money or would you think a nicer harbor-freight unit (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=33497) would do the trick?
I never really feel bad forking out $$ for tools since I'll have them damn near forever, hate paying anybody for anything regardless of how cheap it may be. But at the same time, I'm not rich so snap-on isn't an inventment I can make, hehe.

Harbor Freight isnt known for their quality in products, they are known for selling inexpensive tools.
I would look around at some of the other major companies that sell presses and other machining tools. Be sure to look at the construction of the press, the amount of supports it has.. etc. The ones on HF seem to bend a lot, making it very difficult and risky to work on. You need something more SOLID.
If you take apart your suspension yourself, SAVE yourself the headache and just take the stuff to a shop that works on bushings -- have them press out the oldies and press in the new ones. Its NOT expensive. Besides, you only do bushings ONCE.. its not a biggie. In retrospect, I would have paid.. but ****, I dont mind putting in elbow grease.. so thats why I used the torch method. 1 weekend and I was done.

I totally agree with old_s13, take them somewhere. If you concerned about someone touching your car, then take the suspension apart yourself and just give the shop the suspension peices. Thats what I did, actually I borrowed a cheap ass harbor frieght press from a friend. I agree with old_s13 they suck ass, and are very close to worthless. Anyway I did 2 bushing before I said
[email protected]# this, and took them to a shop. Cost me likst $130 for 10 bushings to be pressed out/in. At any rate give a couple a try, if you think you can do the rest go for it. If you dont want to deal with it, and just want it done after a few then find a shop to do it for you. Let us know what you end up doing in the end.

Beh, my press is working nicely and hapily for a while now. It did fine pressing the bushings in and out. U can however use a vice (also from Harbor Freight), works just as well. Took me about 5 minutes to swap bushings on each tension rod. Dunnow why it took you so long, old_s13...
oh and btw, don't use a a cam gear to press them in :)

because if you READ what I wrote, you would have understood that I only pressed OUT the two TC rod bushings. After seeing my friend's Harbor Frieght press, I was quite upset and decided to do it myself.. without the use of any press.
Do that, then you'll understand. Like I said, I did every bushing on the entire S13. Understand now? :)

I did it press-less as well on the shivic, with a Dremel tool and several minor skin burns from flying melted rubber. Holy stinking mess, Batman! This time, I'm going to try the ol' gasoline on a rag approach, I think. Pressing isn't my main concern, it's that I'm going to get the car on the lift and be likewhoa, what a mess! I don't think that the previous owner gave a shizzy about the care and maintainence of the suspension of the car.
Well, I'm alloting one day to do the bushings. Sun up to sun down, I suppose, and I look forward to the blood sweat and tears. And I was only kidding about no one touching my car. I'm just a little possesive of my baby.

I would just try and use a bench vice to press them out like this guy did.
http://www.240sx.org/atlanta/TC_bushing_install.htm
If you are looking to press ball joints you can rent a tool from Autozone that uses similar technology as above technique, but you can use it on the car (as opposed to bringing the part to the vice).
You should look into the "Greg Dupree" subframe spacers if you are interested in the subframe bushings. You can do a search on the forum to come up with a website for them.
Also www.pdm-racing.com has whiteline bushings...they are in Canada...I dunno how their prices stack up with other places (If you can find other Whiteline dealers).

ok ok lol :)
was just implying that the harbor freight press isn't as bad as you think... looks kidna lame and unstable, but does it's job none the less :) Plus not like i paid for it. My friend collects tools like other people collect stamps. He buys them, and then never uses them. Plus he ran out of space some time ago, so now i have about $1K worth of his tools at my house for free miscelenious use :)

if you dont have the proper tools, take the part (i.e. control arm, whatever, with the bushing) and the new bushing to a shop to get it pressed in. saves time and the risk of something getting f*cked up.

im in the process if changing my rear subframe bushings and installing aluminum ones in there place, let me tell you BIG PITA, i burnt the rubber part of the bushings out and used a sheet metal cutting tool(air powered, kinda like a mini jack hammer) to get the metal parts out, granted it was a pain, i live in a small town and there are no shops around with a press that would have worked, but my aluminum bushings will be here tomarrow, and i guess according to the company if i put the bushings in the freezer they should pretty much slid right in....we will see...

I took most of the day yesterday to put a new dash and door skins in the sr20. Since no one seems interested in buying my ka24de, I’m contemplating keeping it for a track car, and stripping it, adding a cage, and calling it a day. As much as I’d like to see it become another hot swap, no one seems interested in buying it. (?)
SO, the car looks super clean now, and I’m rather proud. Today, I pick it up from the alignment shop and see if any of the crazy oversteer problems are fixed. Some days, I just can’t wait to get home to my car. Is that kind of devotion unhealthy? I think my boyfriend is starting to get jealous.
So back me up here. Who else gets insurmountable joy from being with their 240? Driving, working, racing, cleaning… I guess there are other things I could do, but knitting is so boring… heh.
Thanks for the advice about the bushings. I’ll keep you posted…
:coolugh:
Jealous boyfriends suck. You know the only thing good about jealous boyfriends is when they become jealous ex-boyfriends. Drop him, move to Cali and love Mike Mamos. He is the Greek Adonis. Wait. Adonis was Greek. Whatever. He's hot.

Confusing thread.. but enticing at the same time! I think I'll just go with the flow.
Yes Jenne, come to LA and have sex with Mike Mamos because he has macking skills. My macking skills are so dope, I can get panties wet both online and in real life -- AND -- I am a gentleman* too!
Besides, I know what a woman** wants. I mean, how else can you make your car look good, fix it up, have sex, and be physically, mentally, and emotionally stimulated simultaneously?
There is NO other answer nor is there a finer substitute. Mike Mamos knows the canyons of LA like he knows the ever-so-sensative female erogenous zones.
Ride de poonanny...
* Gentleman: Sundays and Laker games are excluded, I dont need to be a gentleman ALL the time.
** Woman: Females under the age of 21 need not inquire, Mike Mamos does not go out with girls; never pick a flower until its blossomed.

Well....if this site keeps you from wasting time at "bootie clubs" then thats cool. After college I got smart and started spending my "bootie club" money on other things (car stuff) and I'm happy so far with my decision. Come on man....the R. Kelly comment was way low. Nobody even liked his music before he became infamous. Haha!! Didn't he have a music video where cartoons who "believed they could fly" were dunking on Michael Jordan? Yikes.

hey, install went was completed at 530am. *notes* I did all work by myself, using jacks and jackstands (all hoists had cars on them) the 8 or so hours it took me included switching everything from one subframe to another...Removing old bushings took appoximately 3 hrs, installing new ones took 30min(I would suggest finding a shop to remove the old ones) I purchased the bushings from www.splparts.com price was 195 shipped.(i would have just made some on a lathe since i have the aluminum round stock, but i did not know the deminsions) The bushings are very noticeable and i really like how they feel. Now i have to change my exaust mounts to soild mounts(still havnt figured out what im going to use)Overall difficulty...8 maybe, total time...12 or so hrs, i wouldnt recommend just anyone taking this job up, but if you have 4 guys doing it, it would cut the time in half and be much easier, if you have anymore questions just pm me.
*edit*just to clarify these arent spacers, rather they are soild aluminum bushings that replace the stock rubber ones

ridebmx: thanks for the consult on the install.
RANT***
interestingly, i took my 240 to the alignement shop for an alignment and mentioned the problem that i was having (that lead me to believe I needed to change my bushings in the first place) and when i picked it up yesterday the damn thing was still lunging, despite the guy telling me there was nothing wrong with my trailing arm bushings and that everything under the car was "solid". Solid, eh? So this morning I took it back and drove the guy that had proclaimed the car "solid" around a bit. I found a sweeping left, and got in it a little bit. The whole fcking car lunged to the left.
"Oh!" he says, ever the eloquent mechanic. "Gee, I didn't get it to do that."
Can someone please tell me if they've had this problem before?! (Not the numbnuts mechanic, but the lunging. I would bet that it's the bush kings... everything else underneath seems okay, but fails at high speeds going left)
PS - It's a Celica. And it was a favor. But the booty is 100% USDA choice, fo sho. :p

Jenne, I bet its something simple being overlooked. Have you checked your tire pressure? Is the oversteer just THAT bad? Did you happen to change tires recently, maybe its a combination of tires and pressure.
mbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbm> Dude, thats a squirrel, no way can it be a monkey. As for the bootie clubs, it was really just a joke.. I dont like strippers. You know a girl is messed up when she thinks her hourly rate is more than yours. Maybe its just an LA thing, damn money hungry skanks. "I dont looove them hoes, I'm out the dooo'!"
Oh and lets not trip on R Kelly, please. He is the absolute MAN when it comes to making bootie liscious music to "bump n grind" to while keeping it on the "down low." This sex scandal didnt change the way I think of him and his music, so what if he's a freak.. so what if Luther Vandross is gay -- if the music is good, its good.
ps: jenne, I was just kiddin about the celica joke. congrats though, with a bootie like that you should be able to go far in the industry! let j-lo be a prime example of how a girl can never have TOO much ass.. (and let Opray be an example of how a girl should never have too much waist!). :)

Tire pressure, check. Alignment perfect. If it was oversteer (which, with my suspension, I set it up to have some oversteer in it anyway) I would think that it would go both ways? Not just one?
I am going to change my setup to 1-3 from 2-5 and see what happens. Certainly the bigger tires make a difference, but not to the point that it should DIVE to the left in a sweeper. We shall see.
old_s13
09-16-2003, 02:54 PM
Okay, if tire pressure is setup correctly.. then I would imagine the reason your car is diving is either shock related OR a broken/disconnected end-link on your sway bar. Even if one link is not on correctly, the sway bar will not operate correctly. Have you gone under the car and taken a peep?
Seriously, if the car is diving that means that the shock is either too soft (possibly not adjusted properly OR defective). That, or swaybar. I would push down on the suspension when the car is sitting and see how easily it compresses..
Damn Jenne, you're one crazy chick if you're taking your car to its limits. Bigups, safe safe.. respect!

this may sound like a dumb question, but what do you mean by lunging or diving left in a left hand corner? That is just really hard for me to visualize since in a left hand corner weight is shifted to the right. It is counter-intuitive for it to have any leftward motion...
If it was loose the rear would step out right..
Are you loosing traction?
Is the car pushing on left hand corners?
She means the car is tweaked. It oversteers to the left and is neutral/pushy to the right.
