i'm thinking about moving to your devil state. every year i realize more and more that i cannot stand winter weather. where should i look for housing, as in, what parts of socal are affordable/i will not get shot? also where online should i look for listings? i've got some cash saved up, i don't care about my job, i just want out.
this will probably just turn out to be a waaaahmbulance thread, but i need something to do while i sit here and suffer from strep throat. halp. thanks.
edit: have any of you ever seen Step By Step? if i bought a conversion van, could i live in your driveway for a nominal fee?

as long as youre not driving like an idiot there really isnt anything to worry about with getting pulled over in most parts. stock z's shouldnt be a problem imo; not sure about your registration questions. the irvine area is very nice here in socal. its close to the beach, college city, has a lot of companies based/have offices here, extremely clean and virtually no crime. there are a lot of police around since theyre bored out of their minds but like i said before they dont give you grief unless you deserve it. only thing about irvine is that finding an apartment/house will be pricey. only other area ive lived in is placentia, not as safe there, closer to la but around twenty miles, finding a place should be a lot cheaper. hope this helps

if it comes stock than you dont have to worry about it. if you got a hook up on somg, your good up until you get the test only smog stations, then your fucked, unless your smog hookup works at the test only station, WHICH I HIGHLY DOUBT THAT WILL HAPPEN, cause most smog hook ups work at the mom and pop smog shops.

Dont move to LA, too many potholes and a shit ton of traffic. I used to live in LA and I got tired of it haha Im now living in SD and its nice and definitely affordable. Unless your in a gang lol you wont get shot. But in the end you get what you pay for, Socal is beautiful and there is a shit ton to do at anytime of the year. I love cali and as much as i hate their smog laws, ill never leave, ill just find another smog hook up

I recommend living east of LA, I've lived in the Pasadena area for the last few years (in Monrovia now, 10 mins north of Irwindale) and love it. Don't have to deal with West LA traffic, but still close enough to go to Laker games and the beach and stuff.

anyone heard of oxnard?? the land of the damn strawberries... haha!
ventura county is a good place.. close beaches, canyon roads off the pch, 6 hours from SF and 4 hours from SD. We always have good weather not too hot nor cold. Even the dallas cowboys training camp is here. haha

Traffic, angry people, more traffic, smog, expensive California only formulated gas, I would say property is expensive but the housing bubble finally popped and prices are fairly on par with the rest of the country, more traffic, more angry people, and differing road conditions (some counties/cities just maintain their roads better than others, and some wait until potholes litter every corner of the roads and become hazardous). Otherwise, I live in the Bay Area, slightly less crowded that LA or SD (some parts), nice weather almost year round, I can go snowboarding, skiing, water skiing during the summer, go to the beach, or San Francisco, camping, go to the track for an HPDE and so on all within a few hours at most. Lots of stuff to do, just wish there was less people. Smog for some people who do the swaps and whatnot, but there is always a crooked technician for that if you are concerned... People around CA seem... faster paced, and generally unhappy for whatever reason. Maybe it is because they got raped with the housing bubble collapsing...

Don't go the San Fernando Valley, were all full lol. Seriously Oxnard is a nice place, some of my friends lives there and the weather is cool enough that they don't need to turn on their AC even on summer months.
As for smog, drive normal and you won't get effed with. Now if a cop sees you on his route everyday with out of states plate, he will pull you over to tell you to change them and possibly give you a ticket. Happen to me so many times already.

Is there any reason to move to anywhere in CA besides LA/Hollywood area?
No.
Every single place everyone listed looks like the other places listed.(except SF)
They are total suburbia hell.
And they are exactly like the suburbia that you are most likely moving away from.
They have no real redeeming factors, because each one of those places has their cheesecake factory restraunts, and a mall close enough to keep you from actually getting out of that area, and are identical to each other.
"Hey, guys wanna get together at Fridays for happy hour?"
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hYCKh29DLv8/SZrIyBm2aRI/AAAAAAAAB6A/xCijmhmolPU/s320/jennifer-aniston-flair-office-space.jpg
Anything east or south of Los Angeles is either ghetto, or full of idiots with black socks and straight billed hats.
I would move to the Valley to start.
Burbank being the nicest.
But the lower parts of North Hollywood are nice and affordable.
Or west hollywood.
Culver city
Atwater is the next neighborhood coming up.
silver lake is the cool hipster area, and totally safe (also where Mike Essa lives)
Echo park
West LA (my area)
Venice Beach
Santa Monica
All of these areas are within
20 minute drive of downtown hollywood.
20 minutes to the beach
20 downtown LA
20 minutes to all the major studios
1 hour to willow springs raceway.
Basically.
There is no point in living in California if you are in suburbia.
Why would you pay more money for things, have more crime, and live in a place that is like anywhere USA??

I've lived in Culver city, and West Hollywood. Do not move to either. Traffic is not cool.
I'm personally looking to move to Burbank. That shit is fairly open compared to here and just feels plain fucking pleasant! I'm going a little crazy here in hollywood, way too crowded. If you'd like move to Santa Barbara, hella nice, but kinda expensive. If you're a really laid back dude, head to Santa Cruz, that place is chill as fuck and tons of white hott girls! Pasadena and that area is all good too. You'll be looking at $1000+for a nice one bedroom of craigslist in Burbank and Pasadena. A studio if you can is about $800(ish). Other areas such as hollywood and all west LA is gonnaa be $1000+ for a shit cookie cutter studio. Houses, I have no idea. Search craigslist or go with the shitty but sometimes effective westsiderentals.com. They have a grip of property here, and I hear good/bad with their listings. Also check if you get a parking spot w/your place cause street parking is an asshole. People are mostly assholes here too. Um, just drive cool and you will still be pulled over if you have anything that looks aftermarket. The roads are absolute shit here too. GL going to the beach anytime you want, you will resort to doing everything on a tuesday midday if you go. Go to Palisades/Malibu or Huntington for nicer beaches, less crowded. Gas may hit $4 this year too. Job's are not easy to get here either.

That's the effect of living here I guess. I want somewhere quieter to live, cause like he stated, everything is gonna be at the least 20 min. to get too. I've actually driven by castro coming out of universal.haha. There's shit to do here in west LA but it's so fucking packed with traffic all the time it is def nice to just head out and visit for me. And again, I state, EVERYTHING is 20-30 min. (at the least) to drive to! Even going to the fucking grocery store is a fucking chore here, sooo many fucking people and shitty drivers in West LA. Cereal. Oh yeah, you'll prob start saying 'hella' out of habit ahahha. I dont think I could ever go back to LA.
IMO LA is cool, cool to visit for the day not to live, to each his own.
SD is really nice too.
Why dont you take a trip out here and stay with a friend or something and visit some areas in LA, OC, BFE inland empire etc... shit you could stay a my place for a week if you wanted to. Im sure you could manage to couch surf long enough to realize if its for you or not.

lol, thats funny.
If your thinking LA, then you shouldn't be thinking a nice and quite lifestyle.
Thats why everyone makes thier money in LA, then moves to WA and some of Oregon.
I dont have problems with traffic. You just have to know the roads and when you can and cant go places, just like any city i have ever been through.
And living in the LA area, you are at the center of anything fun to do.
Your not stuck going to the ontario mills mall ....again, like the IE people live, lol.
Most people from out of town like LA. There is always something to do if your in the city area (LA,Hollywood, The Valley)
When did you pass me? I take it I was driving my S13? People dont believe I daily that pile, lol.
I started riding fixed gear and do that now.
Its a lot of fun, and you just cruise through traffic.

You havent been downtown in awhile.
Loft living and hipsters have taken over, and the cool thing to do is own a dog.
So it now actually smells like dog shit.

The cool areas, hubs of social life aren't cheap
be prepared to spend $1000 and up a month for closet space
less if you want to live like a rat with a bunch of roommates
also depending on what you do, jobs can be hard to come by
I wasn't feeling Pomona at first
commute to work sucks
but I like being in a place where I can go walk the dog or jog late at night
neighbors are quiet and keep to themselves
having a two car garage
plenty of parks, lakes, hikes, shops etc
tracks nearby
I don't miss the hipster scene and traffic
of Silverlake/Hollywood/Echo Park (wow that shithole became hip, who knew)/etc personally

As a native Californian (26 years living just in Cali, then the last 3 all over the country) I would not recommend moving here. Taxes are insane, (both sales and income) housing is very expensive (my room in OC was $600 + utilities, and even that is cheap. Where I'm at in Florida I could be buying a house for that much). Smog Nazis all over, mobile smog checkpoints, Cali DMV, Cali govt in general. Blah blah blah. Anymore I just vacation there and live on the road the rest of the year.

Thats my point, if you move here, you have to move to the beach area or LA/Hollywood area.
If you move to the burbs, which is the rest of california, you might as well not come. I dont know many people that will rave about how awesome living in Riverside is, lol.
And most of the CA hating comes from poeple living in the burbs/outside the pulse of california. In my opinion, it barely constitutes living in CA, its basically "suburb living anywhere usa."
Not to mention the head of almost everyindustry is here.
Thats the main thing.
If you have some regular job here in CA, then your gonna complain about taxes and housing cost and all that shit. And you should probably move to a different state. Why are you even here?
But if you take advantage of the industry here in CA and the money that is sitting here, waiting for you to make it, then CA will be a whole different experience.

I'm a military brat myself and am also serving and I lived in Long Beach when I was a kid and also San Diego. I was stationed on the east coast and am now back in San Diego and I can tell you that I love San Diego. There is just so much to do and tons of hot ass chics everywhere. Best place i've lived so far.

Simi Valley, CA. I've been around and I stayed here. In 2002, it was the Safest City In America. Since its time being, It has always been in the top ten safest cities in America.
A few that I know that are really good as well are; Irvine, Sunnyvale, Thousand Oaks, and Glendale. Matter in fact, those four cities, including Simi Valley, were in the top ten SAFEST cities in America in 2005.

^^^I work in Simi..its safe..but not much of a culture mix there..people who keep saying cali suburbs are like any other American suburb aren't considering the fact alot of these suburbs are still close to CA pulse opposed to states like North Carolina (visited) it was a 2 hr drive just to get to a decent movie theatre.

If you move to the Inland Empire it's required You paint your car flat black (primer) or have multiple colored body panels, have countless knock off parts, have parts stolen off your car every so often, also some other stuff I can't think of.
OH and You must listen to California Girls by Katey Perry Daily.

I live in carson. Roads here are smooth! My suggestion if you don't wanna get shot is to move to the torrance/redondo beach area, sure, its a tad pricey but totally worth it. Azusa (canyon city) & Santa Monica/Venice is only a 20-40min. drive depending on traffic, beach is a nice 10-15min. freeway drive from the beach. There are a few parts of cities you wanna look out for, but other than that. My area is pretty chill

Most people dont have the priviledge of having your MadMax lifestyle Tyler. lol
I rent my spare room in a 2 bedroom beach front condo in downtown HB for $650, gated, 24hr security, etc.
To me that is a steal. If you look, you will find.
sure if you want to move to Inland empire you can pay a mortage on a home for 700-1000, but youre in the middle of nowhere.
Where else can you go surfing and snowboarding in the same day? only so cal.
Not to mention the head of almost everyindustry is here.
hey is your avatar from Fountain Senior Assisted Living in OC?
Anyways, it is pricey down here. Just make sure to have a plan. You can always live in Santa Ana, but there are a shit ton of cops so as long as you get familiar with the laws u shouldn't' have a problem. Also its a bit ghetto but you probably won't get shot unless ur gang affiliated.

You think its steal? You are so fucking right. That is insanely great. A place in a beach town with gated security that includes parking I take it?
Yes yes deal of the century. For Beach town in socal.
I think its funny that the only state i see commercials on to come live/visit is in California.
Ya that's because just like Hawaii and Florida, California makes money from people coming here as tourists.

I know right, to some that may be expensive but its pretty hard to beat. I pay 1800 for the whole condo and 650 is what i rent the room for.
The condo is up for grabs in March BTW if anyone is interested.

once you get acustomed you will never want to go anywhere else. I can surf everyday before work and if i want head to mountains only an hr away for a night snow session.
My dad has a big driveway he can rent to you in apple valley and pm me about any dmv,vin checks and smog stuff if you endup moving out here.
Apple valley sucks, im sorry. im not hating, just speaking truthfully.
