View Full Version : Adding a sunroof to an s13

Is it feasible?
I know the headliner would have to come off and the frame of the roof would need to get chopped and altered but im curious if someone knows how.

yes they are! my bro had one on his car, and after he installed his stances he said his shit sounded like it was goona shatter on his ass everytime he went over speed bumps
non- sun roof equals more structural rigidity IMHO

Well, you could get an universal sunroof kit but ... yea what they said.. I had a MR2 with an universal sunroof and it leaked pretty often.. I wish my s13 didnt have a sunroof but whatever.. paid 200 bucks for the car lol

i did it in my last car and i had no complaints. i didnt even have to get rid of my headliner. i used this site The Sunroof Doctor - Your source for replacement sunroof & t-top parts! (http://www.sunroofdoctor.com/) and i bought a manual popup one from them. the kits come with a stencil that you put on your roof and cut out that exact shape then cut the headliner and the sunroof sandwiches the headliner and roof so you dont have a sagging headliner, after this you cyclicone the sunroof to the roof and your done. it took a couple hours but wasnt bad at all as long as your good at cutting and have the right tools. i probably wouldnt do it agian but i have a convertible now anyways...lol

but when I see this... I wonder what it would take to have a sunroof.

and also its really nice in the summer.
but the arguements against having one are also persuasive... I dont want one leaking on me

That's a pretty nifty link Zenki, thanks. That's the one thing I wish my car had. Whether or not I'll do it since it JUST got out of paint remains to be determined, but I love open air driving. The CR-V has a sunroof and I love it and and it's one of the thing I miss most about the Miata. Only problem with an aftermarket pop-out is the lack of a sunshade. I guess I'd have to wear a hat at all times. Also popping out the roof glass gives you more helmet room. :) But the structural loss sucks too.

My car was originally a hard top. I tried replacing the headliner when i realized it was not matching up. I then realized that the sun roof was after market. I bought the car this way. This could explain all the advertisement stickers on the inside of my trunk. Ill get the name of the shop that did it if your interested.

The problem with the OEM moonroof on hatches is that there is no built in adjustment for the latch. The weather strip seal can be replaced, but the latch has no room for adjusment so there will always be wind noise. The only way to reduce wind noise is to make some sort of spacer for the oem handle that makes it pull the sunroof down closer to the body of the roof (I use folded up paper).
Every sunroof leaks. If your sunroof is leaking water into the cabin, check the two drainage tubes inside the headliner. Mine was leaking into the cabin and come to find out one of the drainage tubes was disconnected. They sometimes gets clogged as well, so blast them with compressed air.
Sunroofs are cool and all in the summer. I always have mine cracked when driving and often take it completely out on nice days. However the wind noise is so fucking annoying. I ordered the carbon fiber delete panel from Kognition and was super stoked to put it in, but it was a mistake and he only made them for s14's. I was and still am super bummed out. I wish somebody would make the stupid panel.

yeah, im with whiterps13... mine makes a ton of noise after like 80mph... but i just pop it open and it stops.
But, i have a 91 and mine doesnt leak... i heard its common but i guess im just lucky
Kalypso - if you take it to a body shop with all the components, they can do that for you. Pretty must its just cutting out the skeleton and installing one from a car with a sunroof - Or just cut at the a/b pillars and what not - then installing an entire roof assembly. I'm pretty sure all 240sx have the drainage tubes, just blocked off if its a non-sunroof model. No reason for nissan to make two different pillars
Unique

leaky sunroofs can also cause electrical problems, my friends sunroof was leaking into the cabin going down the pillars made its way behind the dash board and fried it.

Not true. The drainage tubes are small rubber hoses that attach to a metal hole in the sunroof tray. They actually route to the open space behind the quarter panel.
They would not be present on a non-sunroof model.

All my S13's had sunroofs. I loved them, they were great and as long as I had the sunroof cover to cover the sun sometimes, it was perfect. I never had any leakage problems or anything like that. I don't get why people bash on sunroofs so much.
"It's much more rigid without one" yeah if your building a fucking 100% Formula D car or something. Even then, look how many convertibles are drifting in pro competition, go ask them about rigid.
Although I probably wouldn't go through the trouble of cutting and making a sunroof of my own. Would just suck it up, or sell my car and buy one with a sunroof in it already

the stock hatch sunroofs SUCK once the outer seal starts leaking.. why? like everyone has said the drain tubes end basically in your rocker.
PLUG the front two, they're worthless and just cause rust. butyl window weld is an easy plug... just cram some in there.
for the rear two, yank out the hoses and re-route them somewhere other than your rockers. i crammed them through my rear seat wheel well seatbelt bolt holes (no rear seats)... they drain nice now
to the OP, dont go aftermarket. what happens if you break a part? i wouldnt want to have to rely on an aftermarket supplier to make replacement parts. at least with oem nissan parts are always available. In a few years when your model sunroof is discontinued and you need a part for it you're going to be pissed.
plus aftermarket sunroofs dont sit as flush with the roof and look ghettoer....
listen to everyone who hates on sunroofs and dont bother, unless you're going to waste mucho $$ and do a full roof skin swap with all oem parts

Might be wrong but i thought the XE coupe came with a popup sunroof.
No actually they usually came with power sunroofs. Now with that said technically a moon roof is a power sunroof. Now truth be told both pop and power are sunroofs. The moonroof term came about in the 70's and was created by manufacturers to differentiate between the two.
Now a strange thing has happened in the 240 world of late. The trend has swung away from non sunroof cars to sunroof cars. It used to be everyone was looking for a non sunroof car due to stuff that has already been stated in this thread.
Now all the kids want their joint to have a sunroof so they can look cool with it popped. LOL
Sorry guys had to say that. LOL
Anyways a Sunroof car with cage will be just as stiff as a non sunroof car. Hence why some people do not care if their track car has a sunroof or not.
Its all a matter of preference at this point. I like coupes with power sunroofs. A lot of taller people do not like coupes with Power sunroof, because it severely limits height clearance for them.
With pop ups its not to much of an issue, of course coupes with pop ups are kinda rare.
Wow all this talk of Coupes and I prefer Fastbacks.
Oh and a Fastback with a power sunroof would have been the shiznit. LOL

there is also two metal ones, im pretty sure, running in the front down a/b pillars
mine have them, and im pretty sure they are metal
The quarter panel ones are possible to reach, just really really hard but it's something you would do when cutting everything to add a sunroof
edit: I'm with drift freaq - i prefer a sunroof. Not because of the type-x bullshit - cause i had my car before i liked type-x, but because it's so much better
In the winter i don't need to blast the defogger, just pop the sunroof open.
In the summer i don't get hot as shit and i don't need to leave the window open and be suffocated by rushing wind
I love the sun that comes in through that light, i love being able to have a choice between taking it off and having awesome refreshing air flow into my car.
And i love how i can sit in winter with my coat on in my car and drive with a gorgeous breeze of crisp winter air blowing through my car and i don't get hot nor do i get cold.
Only complaint is 1, i can't leave it open all the time cause its so easy to open from the outside, so my car gets so hot if i dont crack the window, and 2. it flutters and whistles in the wind @ higher speed
My shit doesn't leak, and when it does ill fix it. I'm not a pussy who complains about a little water and can't fix it.
Oh and cleaning the front two drain pipes with a thin pipe-snake and some drain cleaner works wonders, it won't rust if its not backed up
tl;dr - sunroofs own and anyone who says differently is jealous

what a fucking heap of shit this thread is
i spent a shitload at the body shop having the fucking sunroof DELETED, and now someone's gonna say "yeah man i want a sunroof" - what the fuck. if only my car had no sunroof, i'de be so fucking happy.
so your car has no sunroof, which means its structurally more rigid. now what happens? do you go through the trouble of putting the OEM style sunroof, having it welded onto your chassis with the drain tubes? no, thats too expensive. instead, you pay some shitty ass company to sawzall open your roof, then sandwhich a nasty ass aftermarket piece onto your roof. these companies are rarely in business for long, so good luck finding seals or replacement hinges.
with aftermarket, you get the luxury of wind noise, water leakage, and rattling lever. when you remove the glass there is wind noise as you need a wind blocker.
bottom line, if you're serious about it, get a 240 with a sunroof. otherwise, dont fucking do it. take my advice - i know.

it would be worth your time to just find one that has an oem sunroof. my hatch has one and it makes no noise with the latch shut all the way and i have no water leaking problems. it was pretty annoying to not have the cover for forever, but i finally got one. cover on in the winter and majority of the summer, glass off and in the hatch when its awesome out. on a side note, i got some parts from a kid with a hatch that had a power sunroof. looked like garbage. im assuming it was a dealer thing? or somebody decided they wanted it. regardless, it had rained the day before and the whole inside of the car was soaked.

Now this is funny as anyone that knows me, knows I have been crazy about SE no sunroofs for years. Yes I have a 91 Fastback without a Sunroof with power windows.
Now when it comes to coupes I love the power sunroof. I guess I should have mentioned the only sunroof I really like is the power ones. Oh and yes a power one on a Fastback would be dope. Though somewhat impossible to do due to the shortness roof section.
The pop ups on the Fastback seem to always whistle or leak and without a cage the chassis makes noise going up driveways due to flex. LOL

I like how everyone says 180SX's with the moonroofs are structurally less rigid than non-moonroof ones.. In actuality they're pretty equivalent. Ever remove the headliner and take a look at all the extra bracing around the moonroof area? I'd almost say my 180SX with a moonroof is MORE structurally rigid since mine rarely flexes, creaks or pops. :hey:

according to my 1991 240sx brochure from the dealer, the power sunroof was only an option in the coupe SE and cost an additional 800$. The manual flip-up sunroof was a $450 option only on the fastback SE and LE. Get this....a base model 5-speed coupe had a suggested list price of $14,095. Cheap as fuck.
This pisses me off as I own a base model coupe that some jackalope decided to have a sunroof put in. Looking at the brochure will make you sick as all the cars are super super clean. Not to mention the badass fold out hatchback poster.

putting in a sunroof does not weaken a car at all the only reason they dont let them on track is the glass in case of rollover, but , I dont think every single person with a 240 gives a rats ass about tracking their car. If you're serious. Buy Autoport Model 1735, what I have installed on my 240 hatch.

Originally my car came with an aftermarket sunroof but had no glass and I couldn't find the brand for the glass so I had to cover the roof with cardboard. Bought that exact model from sunroof doctor. Got it installed onto my car for 400 Dollars. They had to take off the original sunroof off and cut my roof a tad big bigger to fit the new one. Holds up pretty well.

I was considering trying to retro-fit a OEM unit or the Webasto Hollandia 100 pop-up, but I can't seem to find anyone that sells the Webasto.

Pictures?
And yes, I'm seriously thinking about it. I miss my Mustang and it's aftermarket sunroof... which leaked, but it was a POS.
I was considering trying to retro-fit a OEM unit or the Webasto Hollandia 100 pop-up, but I can't seem to find anyone that sells the Webasto.
Webasto comes highly regarded and the Tacoma guys love the power roof options and lifetime leak warranty provided by authorized dealers. My local dealer still hasn't gotten back to me with the estimate. :smash:
I really don't know how a OEM would work, As I remember on my original hatch before it got totaled. The roof had a little indention for the sunroof to lay in and actually was not fitted on the roof. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it well but you probably know what I mean or someone else could explain better than me.
Not sure what type of picture you want, Heres one of it inside and fitted. Then there's one with how it looks popped up on the car. If you want different pictures I can take some tomorrow when its daylight.

I was just teasing, man. I'm over here dealing with the OEM trim & rubber seals on my S14 sunroof trying to disintegrate, so it just makes me wonder how anyone could actually want this option in their car.
Shit, I wonder if I can take it all out & put it a new aftermarket unit? Cheaper than replacing the OEM trim for sure.

My old '76 280Z had an aftermarket sunroof... I had a hell of a time tracking down a seal for it 30 years later after it had rotten out... A leaky sunroof in a S30 = Flintstones car in no time

you had a hell of a time tracking down seals because seals typically dont exist
i am the 2nd owner of my s13, and unfortunately the 1st owner had the dealer install a MOTHER FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT aftermarket sunroof. the fuckers cut into the pristine roof and put that junk moonroof in.
of course, a decade later and you've got water leakage when you take a hard turn, whistling at highway speeds, etc... and the "sun moon star company" is no longer to be found. parts and seals do not exist, and you're basically up shits creek without a paddle
weld shut was my only option, though i'm still on the hunt for a non sunroof car to scavenge the roof skin from. i'll get around to that, someday.
fuck sunroofs.... fuck them up the ass

Yeah, one of my old s13's had an aftermarket sunroof that leaked like crazy. Everyone saying it doesn't change chassis rigidity, I beg to differ. Pulling in and out of angled driveways with my coils on made the roof creak something fierce.

Bought my s13 with a poorly executed DIY sunroof that was crooked and leaked like a teenage girl on her menstrual cycle.. Needless to say, it took my paint and body guy 2 days to patch it up and reinforce it to be as close to oem as it can get. Advice? Don't do it, you will regret it..

Why would you buy a car with a "poorly executed diy sunroof" that is "Crooked"?
Thats like saying "I bought a half wrecked 240sx with lots of rust... cost me a lot of money to fix the rust and get the body straight... don't buy a 240sx"

It ran, had perfect interior(minus sunroof), clean title and a straight frame, and spent $800 on it... My car is not a "wrecked 240sx with lots of rust" so please don't make those ignorant comparisons, just contributing to the topic

When you want it the most, there's no easy way out. You just have to get that sunroof.

Do what I did, order one from the sunroof doctor. Then take it to waxworks on 82nd street and Corporation Drive.
I paid 400 for the labor and 200 on the sunroof I think. Labor may be higher for you though since I already had a sunroof just could never find the glass for it so they just made a bigger hole and installed the aftermarket roof.
I ordered the SFC Autoport 1735
EDIT: Ooops didn't know I already replied in this haha.

Pics? Is it flush when closed? I've seen some where the whole assembly is like a 1/4 raised over the roof line - no thanks

pretty sure my coupe has an aftermarket sunroof/moonroof, its not nissan glass and its just a manual one that pops up but doesnt go back, and it leaks. i ended up just sealing it shut with RTV.
