To make a long story short somehow my intake camshaft broke in half at its sprocket. Was wondering why these valves and lifters were not as even as all the others, they should push up when no cam pressure is on them.

Here is cylinder 2 which looks normal

Here is cylinder 3 looks wrong to me

Shot of both cylinders lifters #2 on the left and #3 on the right.

Very likely bent valves. Pull the cam cap out of there so you can see the spring

ones depressed can't be pulled, nothing to grab onto it.

How about a strong magnet?

if you've ever taken apart a motor, a strong magnet wont really do much unless the motor is fairly new and no wear is on it. Best thing to do is to pull the head off and slide it from the top down, this will also let you see if your piston got fucked up, which it prolly did

actually i have taken may engines apart and quite a few KA's. you can usually pull the bucket out by hand, so yes a strong magnet may get it out.

It could just be 2 dead lifters, but seeing that it's a pair from the same cylinder, it's most likely bent valves. That's what my rb20 looked like when I bent both #3 intake valves. You really wont know unless the head is off, or if you have compression numbers though.

i agree with pandapants, its work and you will need a new headgasket but if the valves are bent you will know by looking at the piston.

also if you get a 1 1/16 socket and spin the crankshaft bolt and the engine stops rotating then likely the valve is bent.

or if you start the car and hear a tapping noise then you will know also.

thanks guess im gonna have to pull the head off again. how much does a generic valve set usually run, what else needs to be replaced when pulling the valves?

Clevite had replacement valves for the single came. They went for $9 a valve, I can't imagine the dual cam deviating too much from that.

thats great as long as the seats are messed up, i guess hell see soon enough

Got around to getting the head off. The two intake valves on the cylinder 3 are bent and put small grooves in that piston head. WILL THE GROOVES IN THE PISTON CAUSE ANY PROBLEMS?

Nah, you should be good.

Grooves in the piston head themselves will not cause problems but cast aluminum pistons are pretty brittle so look for cracks. Also, assuming you have all the tools to remove valve springs, remember to check the valves you replace for leakage once installed. Put the head on its side and fill the port with non penetrarating liquid and see if it seeps out from around the valve seat.

Getting a little suction cup on a stick and some valve lapping/grinding compound should fix that right up.

Actually, if you have the cash it might just be a good time to get a full valve job done imo.
