☆ ------------------ ☆ ------------------ ☆
A few months ago, I decided to turbo my KA, but only if I can get it to look as factory as possible, so no shiny piping or flashy parts. I wanted this to look 100% STOCK. Luckily, a guy on Craigslist was selling some turbo parts from an SR, so I swooped them up on my way to Formula D (Beginning of October 2010). It took me about two months to find and buy all the parts, then the build started (Beginning of December 2010).
All the parts used:
-T25 Turbo
-SR Manifold modified to be used on a KA with Stock SR Heat Shield
-370cc Injectors
-SMIC w/ Intercooler Piping and OEM air duct
-Greddy 3" Elbow
-3" Down Pipe
-S14 Upper Intake Manifold with plugged PCV Ports
-PCV system modified using one check valve, tee, and oil separator
-NISSPORT Oil Pressure Adapter
-Mishimoto Radiator with Dual Electric Fans (painted black)
-Hayden Automotive Fan Controller
-R.S. Enthalpy Tuned Ecu (T25, N60, 370cc)
-Walbro 255lph Fuel Pump
-Blitz DD Blow Off Valve Recirculated (painted black)
-S13 SR20DET OEM Intake Box
-JGS Motor Mounts (rubber)
-Nismo Type B FPR
-Z32 Fuel Filter
-NGK BKR7E Spark Plugs
-Isis FPR Adapter
-Greddy 36mm Radiator Temp Switch Adapter
-Bosch Spark Plug Wire Set
-N60 MAF
-Circuit Sports Thermal Plenum Intake Gasket
-Circuit Sports Magnetic Oil Drain Plug
-Innovate 3833 Turbo Timer w/ Wideband
-XTD Stage 3 Clutch
Extras Installed
-DIF Solid Aluminum Steering Bushing
-Energy Suspension Polyurethane Steering

But y stock looking?

12-18-2010, 11:12 PM
if im not mistaken, i saw you car at the anaheim K1 Schassis car show/meet. correct?
yeah. there was a coupe there with KA-T, but he had aftermarket mani and piping. but they were all paint flat black, and from what he told me, cops let him pass being dumbfounded and stuff... cuz of his stock intake box an what-not, but i think yours looks much more stock than his, maybe clean up that intake piping and that zipties...other than that, it would def fool a newbie fan boy if you play your game hard. lol good shit though man.

I dig this...I get a kick out of the 'stock looking' engine bay...keeps the authorities guessing right!
Awesome on the factor manifold conversion. I will undoubtedly use a stock FWD sr manifold on my next turbo altima!
if im not mistaken, i saw you car at the anaheim K1 Schassis car show/meet. correct?

Yeah, even with my half-wrapped Megan manifold and painted pipes he let me go.
This setup will fly under the radar no problem!

^^^yeah clean coupe bro.
yours and the OPs are pretty dope set-up, considering its mostly OE stuff and under the radar type...but you did have a front mount, OP still have the sidemount..still dope though. i like.
Nice work
But I don't see the hot pipe
Thanks!
Matt, I just noticed your radiator is painted! I was thinking about doing that to my Koyo. Super stealthy man! haha.

good work!
Yup thats what I wanted stock manifold with the heat shield. Ultimate sleeper lol.
thanks!
I really like the manifold idea. Looks good.
Thanks, I'm happy you like it.
Wow! Nice job haha. By far the most OEM looking KA-T i've ever seen.
Would love to have this! But more pics of your vert please! Maybe some video??
Im happy with the result it truly does look OEM. I'll post more pics and future videos in this thread soon.
you notice a difference with the DIF solid aluminum steering bushing ??
Yea I noticed a difference with the solid there is no play when you turn the steering wheel side to side while you moving at a decent speed. I recommend it. the feedback from bumps is much greater but I dont mind the aggressive ride.
Nice set up...
But y stock looking?
I just wanted a low-key setup to fly under the cops radar.
if im not mistaken, i saw you car at the anaheim K1 Schassis car show/meet. correct?
yeah. there was a coupe there with KA-T, but he had aftermarket mani and piping. but they were all paint flat black, and from what he told me, cops let him pass being dumbfounded and stuff... cuz of his stock intake box an what-not, but i think yours looks much more stock than his, maybe clean up that intake piping and that zipties...other than that, it would def fool a newbie fan boy if you play your game hard. lol good shit though man.
Yea I was at the k1 meet I ended up taking the trophy for best wheel fitment home that day. :) I dont think I saw that coupe, I cant remember. Are their any pics of his bay? He got lucky lol I'm curious to find out if the cops will know its turbo or not. But I'm not about to go get pulled over on purpose just to find out lol
The zip ties are all gone now, only thing i need to do is clean up the intake piping or paint the couple black.
Thanks for the feedback!
same set up im going with.!
good stuff.!
Good luck man.
I dig this...I get a kick out of the 'stock looking' engine bay...keeps the authorities guessing right!
Awesome on the factor manifold conversion. I will undoubtedly use a stock FWD sr manifold on my next turbo altima!
Hell yea hopefully they wont even think twice about the engine being modified. Sweet let us know when you do that I'd like to see how that comes out.
Haha that was me.
Yeah, even with my half-wrapped Megan manifold and painted pipes he let me go.
This setup will fly under the radar no problem!
You got any pics of your set up? I'd like to see what Steezxit is talking about. :)
^^^yeah clean coupe bro.
yours and the OPs are pretty dope set-up, considering its mostly OE stuff and under the radar type...but you did have a front mount, OP still have the sidemount..still dope though. i like.
I considered front mount but still thought it was too noticeable so I went with side-mount route, I found an OEM duct for it so that made me lean towards the SMIC too haha
Nice work
But I don't see the hot pipe
Look closely under the cold pipe coming out of the SMIC. :)
Thanks!
Matt, I just noticed your radiator is painted! I was thinking about doing that to my Koyo. Super stealthy man! haha.
Yea just hit it with some Rustoleum flat black and your golden haha

My engine bay from the 1st K1 meet.
I made my own "cooling panel" and painted it black to cover the front mount.
Currently, I got rid of all those vacuum lines at the front.
I might tuck my injector harness and stuff, and neaten up my fuel line stuff.

Does this position the turbo so factory elbow and DP can be used?
I have no idea since I'm not using the factory elbow and DP. I had no issues using the ~3" Greddy Elbow, but did have clearance issues using the 3" DP (it would hit the body).
dang your s13 looks super clean. Makes me want a vert haha. If you dont mind me asking, how much did that SR exhaust manifold cost you after getting it modified and all that?
Thanks, you should get one haha. I was pretty much Alex's guinea pig, my manifold was the first he had done so he quoted me a cheaper price of $95, thats including shipping both ways. It may cost a little more now, but if you want a definitive price you should PM him.
Damn that's sexy. Nuthin' more sexy than a slammed vert with gangster wheels done with gangster offsets. You should have blotted out your license plate though.
Thanks man! You are right. fml.
How well does those welds hold up on the cast iron?
It's actually cast steel and they have held up great so far, I expect them to last a very long time.
omg... car is insane.. I love it
Thanks!
what aero kit is that?
Vertex front and sides, Supermade rear.
Good Job! Clean and stock looking!
Thanks you!

Front:
Rolled the fronts, hammered in all lips inside the wheel well, Max negative camber and added a few more degrees of neg camber with eccentric bolts on the spindle.
Rear:
Rolled and pulled 15mm, Max negative camber with Megan v1 Ruca's and eccentric bolts. Other multilink, SPL traction rods, Isis toe rods.
Lowered on Cusco coils.

My rear dz101's are almost bald on 1" of the inside tread, they lasted from sept '10 til now. Ive gone thru many fronts, not because of wear but because I kept changing my sizing but honestly to me its not that bad. And I drive my car ALOT, it's my only car and daily driven.

I made my own "cooling panel" and painted it black to cover the front mount.
Currently, I got rid of all those vacuum lines at the front.
I might tuck my injector harness and stuff, and neaten up my fuel line stuff.

Did you have to do any hammering to the inside of the front fender well due to rubbing? I'm gonna pick me up some 18x10's and I really want to keep factory sheet metal. Trying to get an idea of whats involved. I appreciate any help.

Yea I did have to do some hammering to the wells. Lowering it even more when I changed to 35's didn't help. I rub at full lock right at the front of the well, but oh well its all part of the game. I'm like you trying to keep as much factory metal as possible. I only started rubbing at full lock when I switched to 245/35 back when I had 225/40 I wouldn't rub the tubs because I had less camber, the amount of negative camber up front will affect your tire clearance.

Well its good to hear that there weren't any major issues fitting them. I'm definitely preparing to whip out the BFH and go to town with the fender well. I'm not gonna cry if I rub some, like you said thats just part of the game. I am going to try to avoid it as much as possible though. Would you say that the 225/40 or a 225/35 would be a better choice up front to avoid rubbing(or maybe a 235/35-40)? Do you have any pics with it on the 225's?
Thanks for your help Matt, I really appreciate it.

]I would go 225/35 up front I highly doubt you will have any problems with that. Here is a pic of 225/40 up front. This pic was when i had 18x10 +10 front 18x10 +5 rear slightly negative camber in the front.

The KA's exhaust ports sit 2" higher than the SR, so most turbo downpipes will hit the body.
I had to get my 3" downpipe modified so I could fit it on my car.

Hey, man.
I'm looking at getting some 17x10 -5 for the front of my coupe and I'm trying to figure out which tire to go with, using willtheyfit.com and your car as a comparison.
My question is, have you run a 235/40 up front with this setup? I want the most tire I can fit in the front for better grip whilst sliding, but I can't be rubbin'.

That site is awesome!
Only tires i have run were 215/45, 225/40, and my current 245/35. Both 215 and 225 had great clearance and would tuck nicely under the fender. I think 225/40 would be your best bet, or 235/40 with more negative camber.
shreeveco
01-07-2011, 06:36 PM
Yeah it is! I just found out about it recently, and just in time to buy new wheels!
I think I'll try 235/40 with more negative camber. I'm maxed out in the front now, but I've been meaning to slot my coilovers for quite some time. Gotta get that wheel straight up and down at full lock.
But yeah, like I said, I want as much tire as I can fit in the front, for the best grip, plus I'll be rocking used tires only in the rear. I don't want to have a gnarly rake when I mount a 245/45 or something huge like that back there.
Here's video of my current setup - In Cars on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/14449508) (black coupe). I'm going for a similar look, just with bigger wheels...

I'm getting 526s with 25mm spacers in front and I already have ~30mm spacers in the rear. I'm thinking either eccentric bolts or notching my lower brackets. I guess eccentric bolts would be the better way to go. The rears should fit perfect though.

Yes, this is pretty much a must for the oil drain. I tapped it out of the way of the A/C compressor so I have fully functioning A/C.

I have a quick question for you. I noticed you got that solid steering rack bushing & the JGS rubber engine mounts.. Do you feel any vibrations through the steering wheel at idle? I'm trying to get a feel for how it will behave when I get my solid engine mounts and that solid steering rack bushing by trying to understand how your 'softer' setup feels. Curious if my the fillings in my teeth will be rattled out at idle lol.

No honestly you dont get much vibration through the mounts.. when new the JGS are stiff but after they break in it gets MUCH better. If you get solid anything harder than rubber you will get tons of vibration IMO just go with the JGS mounts my engine moves max 1/4" side to side maybe less That's with a STOCK trans mount which will be soon swapped for a PEAK performance poly mount.
Good Shit, Matt. Looking forward to the updates.
Thanks Santi!

Got some more shit ordered since i started posting here again. :wavey:
I got my Boost control solenoid, Ordered .040" over Wiseco pistons and Eagle rods, got the 20g turbo, and through my good friend Jeremy I got a Turbonetics water/methanol injection system.
So after some research I decided not to convert and run on e85 for various reasons. The new set up will run on 91 pump gas and a 50/50 mix of water/meth injection, which should give me the same benefits as running e85, but without all the cons of e85.
http://media10.dropshots.com/photos/786137/20120211/b_195628.jpg
So as a result my new injectors will be 750cc and I will most likely be keeping the 255lph walbro I currently have.
Ordered my (actually 3 sets for Jeremy, my GF, and myself) pistons and rods through real street performance and should arrive anytime this week.
As for the boost control solenoid, another good friend of mine gave me a good tip lol. A company called MAC makes air valves which is the SAME solenoid AEM rebrands and marks up the price a fuck ton! I ended getting it on ebay for $15 brand new and is the exact same as the AEM boost control solenoid. :D

A few months back I bought a Greddy Informeter touch which last weekend I traded for a gsp 20g turbo. I figured since so many people have had good luck with the 18g on sr and ka's so I'm gonna give the 20g a go. Since I will be running the AEM EMS I will also be using their serial datastream gauge which basically makes the informeter impractical, so bye bye it went.

Legal reasons probably played a big roll in going with a sleeper setup. Cali smog laws are crazy and no one wants to get sent to a ref over it,

the custom manifold work looks good but i bet you dont get more than 5000 miles out of it before the welds go. im still giving props but just sayin haha. and in the end if you do have to go with an aftermarket mani dont get ISIS or Megan cuz they last about 1000 miles if not less before they go. just my personal experiences haha. Only manifold i havent broke on my SR setup is the Tomei Expreme, however I haven't tried the HKS but that one costs an arm and a leg.

If it was welded correctly it's not going to fail. I ran an ebay bottom mount manifold for 4 years, well over 1000 miles, and never had a problem with it. Maybe you were doing it wrong?
Definitely an awesome setup OP, parts list looks great. You shouldn't have any problem meeting your power goals.

Incorrect sir, this manifold has been on my car for almost a year and a half, I have NO flex pipe and I drag my down pipe frequently on speed bumps at school and the welds are still holding up. I must say Alex did a great job welding up the manifold.
I will be re-using this manifold on my next set up.

how did you like the SMIC? i hear they heatsoak really bad and don't allow for a lot of horsepower. i'm probably going to be running a setup similar to yours in the future, and i really don't want to run an fmic, as i live in San diego.

Get an s15 SMIC good for 300hp or an ARC but they're rare and cost FMIC money or get a PBM and paint it black

i was planning to go the s15 route, but they aren't exactly easy to find. at least i don't know how to find them lol. there's only one on ebay, with a dent in the bottom, and no returns no matter what.
as for the pbm one, it looks nice, but it says it can't work with the ac condenser, and i'm certainly not getting rid of ac. =/
any clue on where to get oem s15 side mounts? i'm not really knowledgeable in the whole "ordering oem jdm parts" things.

Question! Has anyone tried fitting this application on a s14? Im trying recreate the same desired look but not sure if s13 piping is the best fitting for all the ka-t applications or if its chassi specific. basically nowhere. keep in mind... smics will work if you aren't hardcore on the throttle. if you're drifting you really shouldn't use a SMIC at all, they get heat soaked fairly easily.

^Good point about not drifting on a side mount. Powered by Max used to have a cool FMIC kit for under $300. It was full aluminum and tube and fin. I was talking about that one but oh well. I'm sure they can make another one like it.

Alright so I have really been lagging on keeping this thread updated, here is what I have been working on for the past few months.
I honestly lost motivation after the first KA24DET build (May '12) blew at WSIR. (later found out the machine shop fucked up my orginal block, and the pistons didnt like it very much)
The car sat for a few months after that, then I came across a Red Bride Artis II (narrower side bolster on one side, perfect for vert since we have wider door panels) that I have been waiting for for over a year now.
After going to pick it up I regained all my motivation!
http://media11.dropshots.com/photos/786137/20120910/b_214427.jpg
So after the seat the vert got her first car wash. (no engine in this shot)
http://media11.dropshots.com/photos/786137/20120910/b_214616.jpg
Artis II installed.
http://media9.dropshots.com/photos/786137/20120910/b_214809.jpg
A few days later a friend of mine hit me up to trade wheels. I traded him my 18x10 +15 AME TM-02 for his 18x10 +10 Work Bersaglio.
http://media10.dropshots.com/photos/786137/20120910/b_214933.jpg
Crappy BFG's on my TM-02's delaminated in one run.
http://media11.dropshots.com/photos/786137/20120910/b_215243.jpg
After all that was sorted out I shifted my attention to the engine work. I came up with a parts list for an oil cooler setup and I got started.
Here we have a 7" Derale fan that I bought off a friend along with a Derale thermostatic fan switch.
http://media10.dropshots.com/photos/786137/20120910/b_213457.jpg
19 row oil cooler was fitted in the passenger side fender area. E-fan was also installed.
http://media11.dropshots.com/photos/786137/20120809/115001.jpg
Then later that week I picked up this bad boy from Juan (manonegra). Skullworks oil block, sexy ass piece to complete my full AN oil cooler set up.. no lame spin on adapters.
http://media11.dropshots.com/photos/786137/20120810/b_082727.jpg
This was my previous oil feed and pressure gauge setup with a NISsport adapter, a little too messy for this build.
http://media10.dropshots.com/photos/786137/20120812/b_145810.jpg
So with all the oil cooler parts purchased I began engine assembly.
Main bearing clearances are well within spec. Crank is lubed up and dropped in.

I also ended up swapping my KA Mishimoto radiator for a SR Sonic motor, reason being my old KA rad wouldnt do shit to keep my engine cool on hot ass track days. I never cared much for the crappy design of the inlet and outlet being on the same side so I decided to use the SR rad which has the inlet and outlet on opposite sides.

K&A Head Masters in Fullerton, they did an awesome job! I'm very impressed by their quality of work! Total for R&R: valve guides, valve stem seals, intake valves, exhaust valves, dual valve springs, shimming to proper spec, and a valve job was $290.
I have been driving the car for about 2 weeks now and have put about 600 miles on the rebuild with no issues.

UPDATE!!
☆ ------------------ ☆ ------------------ ☆
It's almost been two years since my last update. Let me fill you in on how I got into welding/fabrication before we get to the pictures.
I've always wanted to learn how to fabricate, so I learned the basics at Cerritos College in early 2013. By the end of my first semester, Richard and I started Street Faction (http://www.streetfaction.bigcartel.com). Within a year and a half, I managed to stay at the top of each of my classes and became a certified Aerospace TIG welder. With this experience, I'm going to be doing all the fab and welding work on my s13 vert. The goal for my car is to be a drift & grip car. I’m hoping to take it to Formula Drift Irwindale and All Star Bash in October 2014.
Now, I'm finally at the point where I'm proud of the quality of work that I put out and I pride myself in everything I do. I have one more semester of Aerospace TIG welding, then I will pursue engineering.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me at
[email protected] since my inbox is full on here.

April, 11 2014: Pulled my car into the driveway to start the tear down. I will be using a KP GT1 kit for the build.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140411_184311_RichtoneHDR.jpg
I started on the prototype 50mm aluminum overfenders a month prior. I will be styling the body lines similar to those of the FC because they are both aggressive, yet stylish. Expect to see more progress on the aluminum wide body towards the end of the build.

S13 convertible doors are 100lbs each before gutting. After gutting coupe doors, they’re only 20lbs each.

Some people may not fully understand just how heavy the vert doors are. I saved 160lbs of weight by swapping to the gutted doors.

After a while, I started getting lazy, so I needed some motivation. I got an insider tip from Cosmis Racings that a new wheel was coming soon, so I waited and purchased one of the first sets of the 18x11’s in black chrome. Needless to say that shiny wheels make me happy, so back to work I went.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140520_140707_RichtoneHDR.jpg
Looks like my prototype fenders fit on point with the new wheels just as I planned.

I ordered over 120ft of DOM tubing to build the cage and front end with.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140523_203146.jpg
I removed the sound deadening using dry ice and isopropyl alcohol.

Main hoop time. This is my first time building a cage so I’m learning as I go. The hoop is made of 1.75”x.120” DOM, The set back harness bar and diagonal brace are made of 1.5”x.120 and .095” DOM tube all TIG welded together.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140608_195026.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/IMG_20140609_162937nopm.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140609_163115.jpg
I began laying out the dash brace. I won’t be running forward-down tubes off the main hoop/halo, so I tied directly into the A-pillar area/bulkhead for strength.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140611_150708_RichtoneHDR.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140611_150902_RichtoneHDR.jpg
Since I won’t be running forward bars off the hoop, it is very important that I make the main hoop is rigid as possible. I incorporated a To-and-Thru support box design to brace the main hoop in more than one structural plane of the chassis.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140611_185830.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140611_201246.jpg
More weight reduction! Since there won't be any rear passengers, I removed the rear seat brace/seat belt assembly and also removed the boxed strut brace because it’s ugly and heavy.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140629_100610_RichtoneHDR.jpg

http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140629_100655_RichtoneHDR.jpg
Next is the intricate door bars. Here I used regular mild steel ERW tube to practice the upper door bar, good thing I did because I had to revise the design before I made the final DOM version.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140712_184450.jpg
Triangles! Since I won’t be utilizing forward down tubes, I need to make the door bars as strong as possible to successfully join the front of the chassis to the rear of the chassis. I’m trying to compensate for the lack of a roof by doing this.

http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140717_140018_RichtoneHDR.jpg
Here you can see the additional tubular braces that I added to the front and rear of the door bars to tie the entire structure together.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140721_161704_RichtoneHDR.jpg

http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/Matts13vert/Build%20Thread/20140727_202219.jpg
With the help of my friend, Zach, we pulled off the upper cowl panel to better route and access the upper frame tubes into the dash bar.

http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/IMG_20140801_132958nopm.jpg
Turns out that my friend needed a clean front clip for his s13 hatch so why not give him mine. He came down to help with the removal. I’m always trying to produce quality work so even when it comes to stuff I remove and cut out it isn't half assed.

http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140801_133026.jpg
We spent a couple hours removing the entire front clip by cutting all the spot welds and placing two specific cuts to the upper rails. It all came of in one clean undamaged piece.

UPDATE!!
☆ ------------------ ☆ ------------------ ☆
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140802_183051.jpg
August 2, 2014 - After removing the front clip, I went ahead and removed all of the lines and parts from the engine bay along with the wheels and coilovers.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140802_193731_RichtoneHDR.jpg
I wasn’t done removing the rest of the front clip. I spent about half an hour cutting out all the spot welds in tight locations that I wouldn't be able to remove easily after the next step.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140802_201421_RichtoneHDR.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140802_211534.jpg
Now it was time to make a jig that would support the strut tower tops in the exact OEM locations as I build the tubular structure around them. The OEM tops will be thrown away after they have served their purpose. I will be using custom made tops once I design them in Solidworks.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140803_122507.jpg

I continued to cut spot welds and placed two specific cuts to remove the rest of the front clip.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140804_143756.jpg
Now we get to the fun part, the new front end. I spent about an hour taking all the measurements I needed to make a prototype upper strut support for the passenger side.

http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140804_151518.jpg
My goal is to gain as much clearance as possible while maintaining better than OEM structural rigidity.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140804_152314.jpg
If you are familiar with the previous stages of my vert, then you know that I love to run it low. This factory upper frame rail has always been the limiting factor. But not anymore because I easily gained 1.5” of clearance above the tire!

http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140804_161707.jpg
Here you can see how it ties into the dash bar, vertical tube, and upper door bar.

☆ ------------------ ☆ ------------------ ☆
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140807_123100.jpg
You can see the final DOM versions of the new outer strut supports. They are made of 1.5”x.120” DOM tube.

http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140807_182147_RichtoneHDR.jpg
Next up was to make a wrap around type inner support, which is braced in numerous locations. You can see two of the three braces in this photo, the third brace for each side will be made later on for a specific reason.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140809_204711.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140809_204646.jpg
Since the OEM upper frame rail was cut off at the firewall I decided to box it up with a ⅛” plate and add another brace to tie into the original structure. Just a close up of the 65 degree notch and the compound angle miter with no gaps on either end.

After some precise measurements and angle readings I went ahead and cut off the ugly factory rails. I will be replacing them with 2” x 4” x 3/16” steel rectangular tubing. Stay tuned this week for how I splice them into the remaining factory rails.

Nice, arc is a good start especially if you practice alot with 6010 as it teaches you to fine tune your hand eye coordination. Tig is all about steady hands and good coordination.

UPDATE!!
☆ ------------------ ☆ ------------------ ☆
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140812_124203.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/IMG_20140812_124314nopm.jpg
So I recently decided the factory firewall looks ugly with all of the useless holes for the climate control system, and old brake and clutch pedal assemblies. That will be removed soon, for now I removed the steering column support and other small miscellaneous brackets that are spot welded to the upper cowl area.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140811_132540.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140811_162449_RichtoneHDR.jpg
Here you can see one of the three relief cuts that I made in order to insert the new frame rail in an inch. I then reshaped the old rail to match the new rails profile and tacked it in place.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/IMG_20140812_143150nopm.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140812_174027.jpg
I then triple checked all of my measurements and the angles on the new frame rails to ensure they are exactly in the same position as the old OEM rails. After it was all in spec I went ahead and welded them permanently in place, you can see a Rosette weld in the second picture along with the temporary Jig/brace to hold the width of the rails.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140813_121451.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140813_1444171.jpg
Next up I plotted and precisely drilled the holes for the temporary OEM crossmember. I was even able to drop in the OEM paired bolts through with no binding or any fitment issues.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140812_185502.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140812_185435.jpg

http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140812_195454.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140812_205123.jpg
Now I put my 3D design skills to work. I came up with 3 designs, from complex to simple, for the strut top plates. Each one was tested at the max load. They would take if the coil over was fully compressed (6" compression 10k springs = 3360 lbs of force). I over engineered these top plates to take over 10,000 lbs of force.
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140813_195309.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/20140813_195321.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/IMG_20140813_194700nopm.jpg
http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/StreetFaction/IMG_20140813_194740nopm.jpg
These top mount designs will incorporate a .75” offset to widen the front track and allow for more angle. I made an exact model of the PBM Pro camber/caster plate to make sure I won't have any interference with my design.
