Technically this is my first build thread for my S13. I've done some mini build threads for customer's clusters, but that's about it. Let me give you a little insight to who I am and why I do the things I do. First off, I blame my father for my obsessive nature of needing to build/change things. He has built over a dozen street rods and muscle cars in his time. I learned from him to do everything for myself. I'm not sure I even learned very much technical or mechanical stuff from him. However, what I did learn is much more valuable: "If you don't know how to do something, then you're just gonna have to figure it out on your own". So with that knowledge, I usually refuse to have help with anything and struggle taking even the slightest advice.
Onto my S13. If you haven't already noticed, I have to be changing something worth noting on my S13 every year. Every winter I plan a project and make sure it's completed by the spring. If not by the spring, I make sure to have it done by the Import Alliance meet in Nashville around the middle of July. This makes for a really good deadline and assures I have a fire under my ass. Especially since it's over a 1000 mile round trip, I have to make sure everything is in perfect working order before I make the trip.
Onto the build. I have had the SR setup for over 4 years now... I think it's time for a change in a fairly big way. Originally I was going to do a used LS1, but a friend of mine that has had several LS1's in his RX7's put a little bug in my ear about doing an LS3. I researched the costs of doing so and a new LS3 crate motor isn't as bad as I thought it would be. So LS3 it is! I will touch basis on the LS3 later.
Since I will have everything out of the bay, I am going to fill and shave the bay. I had already planned to do this over the winter anyway. Along with that a Chase Bays brake line tuck and brake booster delete utilizing a Wilwood master cylinder. Chase was kind enough to give these to me free of charge and let the Zilvia community know what I thought of the product. So it will be interesting to see how this stuff works/performs. I have the product in my hands and will be posting pictures soon. I will say the product is up to my standards in every way so far. I figured I might pick up his radiator tuck also, which will give me more clearance for the intake on the front of the LS. It's usually pretty cramped up there. Or I may have my own fabricated if I need something very specific. We'll see when it comes to that time.
Last but not least the aero. Yes, I finally found a damn K's aero bumper where the seller was willing to ship it to me. I have a source for the Silvia skirts and rear valances, just getting a shipping quote for that stuff.
So to start this build off, I need to sell all of my crap!:D I'm going to try and sell the whole kit and kaboodle as a package first. Basically a 400whp S15 SR ready to drop in with all of the fixings... Power FC, Full Race GT3076, FMIC, all of the AN lines, breather box etc. etc.
So basically all of this, and I will make a pretty good package deal. Otherwise I'm gonna have to start parting it out. So if you are interested in this entire package, please PM me and we can discuss price. PLEASE DO NOT PM me for individual pricing. I will post in the for sale thread when and if I am parting it out.

Good luck on the build Toby! Anything you touch seems to be top notch when it completed. Thanks for going OEM Aero. I knew an Aero bumper would come your way eventually.
PS: Great feature in Modified.

I can't wait for more progress. Best of luck with the build, I'm sure it'll turn out incredible since you're so anal for that kind of stuff. I tried by best to keep all of the details straight in my build, but it gets hard when you do it for a year non-stop.
OE sides and rear was the only thing keeping me from really lusting after your car, so when you get everything done after this build I'm sure I'll be extremely tempted to try and make the drive out to Import Alliance!

That was a stupid post. You could have said anything else about it and it would have been completely fine...But me and the rest of the community that will be watching this build know that anything Broadfield does to his car is going to be well beyond "nice". Sorry its not "JDM" enough for you teddy.
Broadfield: I would imagine you'll be keeping A/C in this? I've heard it was rather complicated with Lsx swaps. If you do keep it..you'll be the first ive seen to actually do it.

I'm following this thread with much interest. In the next 2 years I want to swap a LS1/2/3 into my s14. I was thinking the LS3 because 6.2L sounds awesome and it makes the most power stock, but then I was thinking the LS1 because that will still be overkill on power and torque and it will get better gas mileage(not that that is really too much of a concern) and be quite a bit cheaper in crate engine form.

I'm sure this is going to turn out very clean! If you have any questions on your shaved bay or brake line tuck, I've been working on the same thing and would be more than happy to help answer any questions you have. (Except my line tuck is using all AN fittings + stainless hard lines behind firewall)

i agree
but i guess some people have other priorities.. if they want more power, domestic parts, etc... nothing wrong with that, its their car so .. do as they wish.
the way i see it, sr was there originally (overseas), so sr should stay there. these cars need nothing else.
good luck toby, hope it turns out as planned

He just wants something different than what he has had. This has nothing to do with the rest of zilvia. Its like anything in life, once youve had something you get over it and want something new. I personally would stay SR but that is me. Broadfield always does top quality work so I know this will turn out sick!

12-13-2010, 12:17 PM
I am in full support of the V8 swap. I am a little biased but this should be really sweet.
As for those who are traditionalist, lets get real. We live in the USA. The SR is a motor swap for us. If you want traditional, keep the KA. Otherwise everything is a swap, and in that case, anything is fair game.
Are you going to make your own mounts?

That was exactly my point, im not a fan of v8's also but Broadfield mentioned that he had his SR for 4yrs already, it is time for something new. I personally would of done a vq but thats me. All the dick riding v8 fans need to calm down just because we have sr fans in here. Like Teddy said....this is a message board so WE ALL CAN VOICE OUR OPINIONS! Hey jackass I have a lsx s14 I know what im talking about dumb fuck, but hey guess what its my track car not my daily to pick up your mom in. If you want to know how to run ac all u need to do is run a custom ac hose just like you would do with any swap. Then u need to get it wired in which is rather easy but opted not to run it but if u like so on silviav8forums.com and look up the threads that twistedsymphony has written on wiring it in to your car. ps i recommend going with a sikky kit. Im sure its on par with your work lol. The only thing i didnt like on sikky kit is that shifter position is tad bit to forward so i had to trim my shift boot trim but im not sure on a s13, and that they sent me a s13 driveshaft instead of a s14 but that was fixed quickly

Haha neat. Thanks for the links. Hopefully we can learn something from them. I was just questioning your logic on saying fast cars don't have A/C. Just sounds like 16 yr old Honda fanboi logic. You didn't mention your s14 was a track car (or anything about your car?). This is Toby's thread, a thread about a street car. Street cars of this caliber have both power and comfort.

I guess your right on the part of his car being a comfortable car but 90% of the ls 240s are not daily car per say lol. I drive my car on the streets but its not my main car so i opted not to lose hp and weight with ac.

Jesus, I'm gone for one day and this thread is blowing up. I knew I couldn't leave you guys home alone.:D
I'll be answering a lot of the questions asked, I just need to finish my reply to about 20 quotes.
For what it's worth, I don't want everyone to agree with what I'm doing. I just want people to appreciate the final product and the work that went into it. So Teddy, keep on thinking how you think man... I like hearing everyone's opinions!
Keep the reply's and bickering coming... it makes for a fun thread as long as it doesn't get out of control.

I only know one thing. If I'd have posted up that I was going to put a v8 in my car, the thread would've been closed in a heartbeat. Somehow because this car is cleaner than mine and the guy is well known, it's allowed to stay open and get three pages (and who knows how more) before it gets closed.
What should've happened. For sale thread for original posters motor, then once some parts and actual build are going on, by all means start a build thread.
Really now zilvia, let's abide by the rules that you all created in the first place.....come on now.

Yeah, I really don't get the whole build thread rules on this site. It doesn't appear that they are enforced considering the amount of partial build threads on the first page of "Chat". I really don't get what the issue is. If someone doesn't like it, then don't view the thread. It is my understanding that the rules were made to keep members from starting a build thread then running out of steam and patience 3 weeks later. I can assure you neither of those will happen with me. Besides, my build will never come to an end... I will always be changing something. If they close it, then I will simply collect all of the pictures I have from the last 3 years and post a massive build thread of the crap that everyone has already seen. Then I will post the LS3 swap as a continuation of my previous builds. Either way this will get posted. I feel it's much more informative and fun to see it as it happens and get feedback from others. Especially if someone knows more than me and they see me do something that is ill-advised... they can give me a pointer in real time.

People dont seem to understand that nobody is questioning whether this build is gonna be sick or not, we all no with Broadfield's expectations this car is going to be even more epic then it already is. Some ppl love v8's while others love SR's it is what it is. Tired of reading through this thread and every other quote is that us SR guys think this swap is gonna suck because its an LS3. Its different but again we all know its gonna be a sick ass build

Man... You should record a video of a burnout with the SR before you swap it out. One of the cleanest, meanest cars around, and my life would not feel complete if I didn't see putting some power down, and beating the shit out of some asphalt.

Too late for that. It's 3 degrees here as I type this and the roads are absolutely caked with salt, snow, ice and whatever else you can think of for the next 3-4 months. Good idea though:)

Pics of the aero bumper that I received on Thursday. I must say, it's one of the best condition ones that I have seen go up for sale. The kicker is that it's also the cheapest that I have ever seen for sale... and in the last 3-4 years that I have been looking, I have seen about 20 or so. I also have the Silvia skirts and rear valances sourced... just waiting on a shipping quote. I want to give a shout out to kouki-gymkhana on here. He gave me the mad hook-up on this bumper. Even contacted me first, before he posted it for sale, to see if I wanted it. Thanks again!

I like what you have going on over there. I am not a big fan of the V8 Swap, but my reasons are simple, I am a closed minded JDM fan boi. Just Kidding. I actually don't know enough about V8's to judge either way on a V8 engine selection.
I am looking forward to it though, your attention to detail makes your projects no matter how small, very nice and worth a look.

If Toby really wanted to, and needed to conform to the rules, he could post a picture of the car when he got it, say "I did some stuff to it and built it," and post the pictures of it in Modified magazine- thus creating a complete build thread. THEN he could post about the LS swap plans, and everything would be just peachy. Maybe that's why they didn't care?

Jesus, I'm gone for one day and this thread is blowing up. I knew I couldn't leave you guys home alone.:D
I'll be answering a lot of the questions asked, I just need to finish my reply to about 20 quotes.
For what it's worth, I don't want everyone to agree with what I'm doing. I just want people to appreciate the final product and the work that went into it. So Teddy, keep on thinking how you think man... I like hearing everyone's opinions!
Keep the reply's and bickering coming... it makes for a fun thread as long as it doesn't get out of control.
Good attitude. No matter what you do it will be very nice I am sure. I actually love LSX's so I can't really understand why I'm dissappointed you chose this route.

LS7 crate costs are utterly rediculous from GM...granted they make power, and are reliable, but the simple fact is that a ls3 based setup can darn near make equal pwoer (don't get me wrong those cubes would be nice) but at much less cost!

Yeah, a crate LS7 is $13000 ... twice the price of the LS3. We'll see on the tires. I have 285's out back, so not bad. I think it will hook okay actually. I think the 400whp turbo setup is actually worse because of the shock on the drivetrain/tires when the turbo hits. The V8 which be very linear. We'll see.

Who ever said they're anti-V8 are fanboys. If there is legitimate reasoning behind it, it's your car and your money and I wish you the best of luck. Everything you seem to touch is fiyuh. And for those who said the SR is going to be more reliable than the V8 is nuts. How is a turbo motor with much more aspects to it going to be more reliable than a LS that is made to take high horsepower?
Toby, do you. I saw your car's other build thread following it the whole way to the magazine feature which is sitting like a bible in my room. Can't wait to see the custom things you got going on with this thing.

Chase from Chase Bays was kind enough to send me his new brake line tuck and his Wilwood brake booster delete kit. All he wants in return is my honest opinion on the product and how well it works. Good timing since I'm about to have everything out of the bay... tearing stuff out now. I'm interested in seeing how the non hard lines perform compared to the OEM hard lines. He has assured me, and everyone else that asks, that there is absolutely no differences in pedal feel or performance. He has these kits on a slew of time attack cars... so we'll see. I'm also very interested in seeing how the manual brakes feel with the Stoptechs and rear Z32's. It's been probably 20 years since I've driven something with manual brakes.

Instead of being a bozo newb, sit back, relax, and enjoy the build. If anything, the 'good ole boys club' supports him. That's good enough. As I have already stated, it can be closed if they want to close it. I am more than prepared to post a build thread of the ages of the last four years of my work on this car... which may I note that everyone is already familiar with. I would then simply continue at the end of it with this build that I'm currently doing. My car is never finished, so it's not like I'm going to complete a "build" then post up the finished results... it's ongoing. I'm not some 16 year old that runs out money 3 weeks into his build thread. I saw the rules, but assumed they were no longer enforced considering all of the partial build threads in the first page of "Chat".
Edit: Thanks for getting my back Cody!

It looks like this is the place:
LS376/480 HP 6.2L CrateEngine with HotCam 19244549 - Crate Engine Depot (http://www.crateenginedepot.com/store/LS376480-HP-62L-CrateEngine-with-HotCam-19244549-P2218C509.aspx)
I have looked at some other places, but this seems to be the cheapest and offer more of everything else... accessory kits etc. I have not had much luck finding a used one. Most of them are totals and want a hefty dollar for the front clip or whole car.

Anytime. It's the few 'builds' like yours that keep the decent guys around anymore. Shame these nitwitted new guys are more concerned with being 'cool guys' than doing anything decent for the community. Thankfully they can read the rules, but they need to be able to sperate the 'wheat from the chaff'

I'm still surprised you want the crate engine route, especiallly considering how cheap you can build a junkyard 6.0 to your specs. In the same respect I can appreciate the 'crate warranty' but I'd sooner get a junkyard 6.0, throw a cam/valvetrain/heads on it, and go from there. I'm sure the 6500 cost could easily be 'beat' but (again as before) I can appreciate the 'done now/install tomorrow' aspect.

Have you always been a tattle tale? TOby is one of the communities few ( read: less than 30 of us) contributing members that isn't caught up on what shitty coilvover to run, or to what crappy ass setup is best)
Instead of being a bozo newb, sit back, relax, and enjoy the build. If anything, the 'good ole boys club' supports him. That's good enough. You are not going to get any trophies, accolades, or friends being a tattle tale. One would think you'd be able to differentiate between a 'build' and a jerkoff installing 500 dollar used coils on his salvage title s13.

Unless you are getting some sort of deal on the crate motor, then your going to over pay for what you could have.

I'm with these gents. I've helped many customers make their V8 dreams come true, from the budget guy to the brand new, forged 402ci LS2 guy who then decides to throw 10psi from a Vortec T-trim at it. While I disagree with Cody on the 6.0 being the ideal N/A motor choice (weighs 80lbs more than alum block LS1/2/3/etc), I have had this discussion approx 1x10^10 times.
Crate motors are a lose/lose to me, and anyone else who does this for a living - you're paying "built motor" prices but getting an OEM engine. Zero miles with forged internals and balanced/blueprinted by hand, and built specifically for your needs, or zero miles with cast internals, not balanced, not blueprinted, never been looked at by an engine builder? Then you STILL have to buy accessories separately?!?
Unless you're going LS7 or LS9 (which are hand built, and still a total rip off except for the namesake), I'd say crate motors are for suckers. If you need some pointers on what stuff costs and where to go, I'd be more than happy to give you some food for thought via email/PM.
Who is going to do your wiring? Or are you going to do it yourself?
That's a good question (I did nooblet's), I assume you're doing it all yourself? Were you going to buy a new aftermarket harness, make one, or buy an OEM harness to modify?

LS3's are great starting points ~ you can get the blocks for $1500 brand new.
I realize you're just beginning on this and probably don't have the details nailed down yet. But have you given any thought to the engine harness and PCM you will be using? GM or stand-alone? If GM, are you going to keep the drive-by-wire system and install the drive-by-wire throttle pedal?

Broadfield I assume your going with a GM performance parts engine managment and wiring kit? My old man and I used that for our LS2 swaped '69 firebird. I would suggest going that route considering the ease of install, all connectors labeled, no fuss with VATs (oem anti-theft) and the fact it has its own fuse box.

LS3's come in 2010+ Camaros and 2008+ Corvette's ~ I've driven stock and race Camaro/Corvette/S13 and neither drives anything like a S-chassis.
... and then there's the $30k you'll need, instead of $10k for a swap into an already-nice car.

Correct, I don't want a lot of down time. That's why I'm leaning towards the crate motor. I don't "need" forged anything and the 500whp I can get from the LS3 with nothing much more than a cam, headers and a tune will be sufficient to me. I haven't really had a chance to research building one from a bare block like GSXRJJordan recommended, but I would imagine it would actually be more considering I would want to go a little more "all out" if I'm going to take the time to build it... $2500 heads and all of the other stuff adds up real quick. But I'm starting to research it now to make sure I don't regret it later.
Keep in mind, I have no idea what I'm doing. Just like my SR and the rest of my S13, I learn as I go. My profession is high-end car audio. I also do some custom interior pieces for cars beyond audio... like my clusters etc. But otherwise I just build cars because it's my passion and my hobby. I'm no expert at building cars.

Yes, I plan to use to the GM engine controller and probably EFI Live. We have arguably the baddest EFI tuner in the country less than 2 hours north of me. Which then of course I will use the DBW throttle/pedal. If I end up going with the crate motor from Crate Engine Depot, you can bet your ass I'll post about the experience.

Possibly yes, or just do my own from a OEM harness.

My suggestion, skip the crate motor and get a used pullout, the mileage on them is going to be plenty low, piecing all that stuff together for the crate motor is extra headache.
As far as the harness goes, there are universal harnesses on ebay, that make a great choice for one to modify, as the oem harnesses often come off the engine and an un-desireable corner, or just plain dont have enough length from the engine to the pcm connectors, the universal ones on ebay come off the rh rear of the engine, and have enough length to route stock style along the firewall and through into the dash, leaving only minimal changes needed to make a "as close to oem as possible" s-chassis LSx swap harness.

Too bad used pull-outs are not common at all. LS1 sure, but not LS3's. Or they are selling the entire front clip of a C6... which I don't have the funds, space or time to dick with parting it all out.
As for the harness, I'll just make it whatever length I need... it's not that big of a deal. I have dealt with automotive wiring for a living for the last 18 years, so it's a walk in the park.;) I'll still look at this so called harness on Ebay though... just to see what it is you are talking about.

With all this talk of buying a used engine, all I keep thinking about is how superbly clean your SR was. Therefore, it would stand to reason with your OCD nature, your new engine setup will also be done in the same it's-so-clean-you-can-eat-off-it way. Buy a crate engine and be ten steps ahead; they don't come cleaner than brand new.

A little be of an update:
Ordered some cosmetic stuff for the swap this weekend. I place as much importance on the visuals of the bay as the performance... I like to have a nice balance of each. Lets face it, even though an LS swap is a V8 under the hood, it looks like crap. The coil packs mount right on top of the valve covers, along with all of the associated wiring. So GM came up with a solution by slapping on a cheap looking plastic cover... not quite my style either. So I have decided to go with a setup like below: Katech aluminum raised, slotted valve covers with their inlay... which kind of breaks up the plain look of the cover. These will also give me plenty of room when I upgrade the valvetrain down the road... larger springs, rocker arms etc. In addition I ordered the Katech coil pack relocate setup, which moves the coil packs up top, right next to the fuel rail. I then want to paint the covers and manifold like in the picture. Not yellow of course, but something. I haven't really come up with a color solution yet, but I'm sure it will come to me eventually. I think having the covers and manifold all painted give it a nice modern look. I'm sure some will disagree, but as usual, I don't care.

If you are not familiar with what an LS looks like without the plastic covers on, here is an image to give you an idea of the mess:

It seems to be on the covers on their website, so hopefully that picture is just wrong. It'd be a real pain in the ass to have to remove a valve cover every time you do an oil change. :keke:
Looks clean though. I wouldn't expect any less out of you.

I have powdercoated (and stickered) panels on my LS to solve the "looks"/coilpack issue, but I also did a Mil-spec tucked/loomed engine harness so there wasn't that whole mess of wiring on top of the coilpacks/injectors. We'll see how much I like them once the engine bay's all painted/tucked and the new aftermarket fuel rails are on.
The Katech dress-up stuff is seriously pricey... the argument that you'd get from me isn't that it's not sexy, it's that the money could be spent elsewhere/etc.

No paint...polished! It looked clean on your old setup and your wheels are polished; it is all very matchy matchy (with the assumption there is an aftermarket intake that is not plastic).
You mean something like this? Hell, I wouldn't even spend that much on a manifold:
Wilson Manifolds - Billet Bank Chevrolet LS Series Manifolds (http://www.wilsonmanifolds.com/products/manifolds-/billet-sheetmetal-manifolds/billet-bank-chevrolet-ls-series-manifolds.html)
I want to do something different than the polished this time around. I had the polished theme going for 4 years... it's time for something new. And to be honest with you, I was actually going to paint all of my polished stuff on the SR this winter if I had kept it.
I figured I would get the price comment from someone, but I don't necessarily have a concrete budget I'm working with. I guess what I'm saying is that I won't be sacrificing getting other parts because of the Katech stuff. I'm pretty loose with my wallet. I don't have an endless amount of funds by no means, but I can always make more:)
i like the way Ls's look with the coilpacks and all. looks mean looking in my opinion but to each his own.
heres my engine bay. definitely not as clean as yours is gonna be but its pretty clean..
Can't wait to see the progress of this build!!!
Yeah, I guess they just look like a big black blob in there... I want a little "pop".

you could just always relocate the coil packs if you wanna go for a cleaner look. Theres a person on here who was doing that to his ls.

Okay okay okay.
I'm really sorry, I don't mean to threadjack, and I don't want to start a thread war, I just want to solve this gigantic internet myth once and for all.
A guy named Fred Allen Burge (who was on here, and started engineswaptech.com) weighed some engines a while back. I'll just quote him:
I'm going to compile a list of engine and transmission weights. All weights are on a new, professionally calibrated, industrial scale and will be photographed for accuracy. The engine pallets weigh 53lbs, I still need to weigh a tranny pallet. I intend to weigh all motors without accessories or wiring but with all manifolds and fuel rail(s). All motors have been drained of oil and coolant but aren't necessarily "bone" dry.
KA24DE - 330lbs

02 Corvette engine (alum. block) - 456lbs w/o pallet weight (note: this one is on a lighter pallet then the others, this pallet weighed 28lbs)

Now we all know that the SR weighs within 10lbs of the KA (with the T25 on the SR) . So add accessories to both engines, and you're still looking at a difference of at least 100lbs btween the KA/SR and the Chevy LS-series. And there is no way a larger turbo/manifold/intercooler weigh 100lbs.
Please stop saying they weigh the same.

Well, you can bet your ass I'll be weighing everything before I ship it off. My Full Race manifold and GT30 probably weigh close to 50lbs or so. Then you have the FMIC, all of the piping, couplers, T-bolt clamps, down-pipe, BOV, external wastegate, dump tube, breather box, all of the associated AN lines/fittings etc. I bet it's a lot closer than you think. However, we need to take into consideration the weight of the headers that I will be adding.
We were just debunking the comment of the LS being heavy compared to the SR and thereby making a case of why you shouldn't run it. The fact is, it will be really close in weight when it's all said and done... hardly enough to keep me from running one.
Good info though man!

Don't forgot you're taking a cast manifold and T-25 off and replacing it with the full-race and GT30.
But yes, I do see your point as well. It'll be interesting.

Broadfield, I've always enjoyed the quality of your work and attention to detail, but especially the cleanliness of what you do. Can't wait to see this thing completed. Figured I'd share something from silviav8forums.com (http://SilviaV8Forums.com) as it pertains pretty well to what you guys are talking about:
silviav8forums.com :: View topic - The question of the month "What does it weigh" (http://www.silviav8forums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3120)
We have all asked what does it weight and have researched LS1 weights KA weights and SR weights but the reality of what it actually weighs is far from a stat posted on the internet. You need to consider the whole package to get an accurate weight. I had estimated that the LS swap would increase the weight of my car by about 98lbs and was looking to see a number of around 2760lbs but when we threw the car on the scales my first response was to reset the scales. Once we recalibrated the scales we notice the numbers did not change 2645lbs. How could this be?? Nothing has changed on the car at all with the exception of the LS swap and we all know they are a good deal heavier than an SR20det right? Wrong!! My car is a 1995 Zenki Silvia that had a 541whp Sr20det The engine had stock intake manifold and a full race top mount with custom GT turbo 44mm waste gate F.M.I.C. and all aluminum piping. The build was made with very light weight components I actually used thin wall stainless for the down pipe and dump tube because I felt the full Race down pipe was way to heavy but most people do not consider all of the things that you add to a SR to get a bit of HP out of it. Full race top mount manifold 29lbs, FMIC and piping 27.5 lbs thats 60lbs and we have not even got to all of the small things like waste gate, boost controller all lines and hoses, oil catch can etc. The car is 100% complete interior with all digital climate control in place ( Its AZ you have to keep the A/C ) and no interior or exterior pieces missing. So how is it 16lbs lighter than it was with the SR20det? Simple we keep weight in mind when building every component used in our kit and there are fewer items needed to have a fully functioning LS swap. So when you have that ignorant person asking why you would put that heavy ass engine in your car you can let them know it is for weight reduction.
The information above is impressive but what is really impressive is how much weight shifted to the rear of the car I had 793LBS on the front left and 798 on the front right after corner balancing with the SR. Now with the LS my front left is 762 and my front right is 784 with the rear left at 541 and rear right at 558. (I will pay more attention to cross weight in the future this was just a quick setup with a new set of coilovers. The springs need to settle before I spend anymore time on cornerbalance.) You can see that over 50lbs was shifted to the rear of the car.
The same scales were used for the SR weights as well as LS weights and nothing was changed on the car but the LS swap.
I have never weighed my car, just sharing what's been posted over on SilviaV8. I'm not sure if you have to be a member or not to see the other posts, I know some of the forums require an account.
P.S.- post a build thread over there, quality ones are always a great read, and everyone there has gone through the same problems getting theirs running.

If you changed the intake manifold on an LS I would either do the fast90 or the newer fast120's. If you went with something else, I would suggest that you go with something that has full customization options like the Marcella Manifolds. You get to control every design aspect of it, runner length and more.

Although this issue has been beaten to death, I would like to point out that the 02 Vette LS1 was weighed with the heavy ass cast iron manifolds. Removing those and going to a long-tube header saves 20+lbs.
I think "Fueled's" writeup from silviav8 is more pertinent to the discussion than Fred's but it's all good info. I think the days of people actually thinking SR's are better than LS's in any regard are over.

Cars don't need wire tucks or a clone FD cluster, as broadfield's is, to be beautiful. Just make it functional, and take it to the track. Don't do performance enthusiasts mods, and then hard park, damnit. This is why I don't have much respect for Broadfield. His car won't ever see the track, and for that reason, I don't ever want to see it in a magazine.

I am building my car and yea I am going to race it but that doesn't mean I don't want it to look good. I think he should get respect from any enthusiast just because the cars he builds are obviously built well and built to be used.

Well then read different magazines. This car is driven, just about everyday, and driven pretty fucking hard for the kind of shape its in.
Some people dont like to build full out track cars and drive them everyday.
Some people live in places that a track car is far from law-enforcement freindly. Toby lives in a smallish town in central Illinois in which most cops probably know him by name. Building a fucking track car, when he is a 30 something dude with a wife and two young kids, when there is no track within hours, is far from practical. To be clear, just about everything on this car is functional as a street car. Thats the point of it.
And to be honest, Im sure nobody really cares who you respect.

I don't care about you or your feelings, now get off my nuts. Just because I don't like something doesn't mean he needs to give two shits, but I am allowed to say that I don't like something. And don't talk about cops not being car-mod friendly. I live in a small city in North Carolina, surrounded by towns that will pull you because you "got on it a little hard, heard your exhaust." This thread has two pictures of SOMEONE ELSE'S motor and some pictures from a magazine spread. Kind of useless.

Nice find man, now that's what I'm talking about. I never thought about taking my car to the scale and doing a complete before and after. Now it's too late to do a before. I have taken it to the scale many times before, but I can't remember exactly what it was... so it will be pointless to weight it after and compare.

Wow, a little harsh! Since when is my car not functional? Just because I don't use it like you would, doesn't make it any less functional... does it? Hell, it has a fully functional... well, everything. Take it to the track, strip, on 1000 mile trip... all the while chilling in the air conditioning. I'd like to see pictures of your work compared to Broadfield's. I'm sure that will give you a good idea as to why we "ride his dick".
There's a reason magazines have articles about his car. There's a reason that anyone into 240's knows all about Broadfield and his car. There's a reason people pay him hundreds of dollars just to have a custom gauge cluster.
His work is legit. It is 100% perfect. The difference between him and most other people, and probably including you, is he doesn't settle. If there is one little tiny speck that he does not like, he will completely start over. You obviously haven't taken a look at pictures of his car. It's not a track slut. He built it to enjoy cruising around in it. That's pretty damn functional. If you can't respect the work he has already put into this car, much less how much more he is about to put in, you need to sell your car for a kia and find a new hobby. You are a sack of shit for what you have posted. Your not an enthusiast or whatever the hell you think you are. Please leave this thread and post your useless bull shit on another forum.

and when Toby actually posts progress with the car and shows it finished with a v8 motor in it the responses will pretty much be similar to the guy with the supermade zenki with the v8 in it for sale.
"OMG THAT SHIT IS LIKE MY DREAMS AND HOPES PAINTED RED MAN OMG OMG"
"V8 is the truth, fuck turbo cars, buying tons of AN fittings sucks dick."
"Building engine bays is for honda guys, lets start building motors again"
etc, etc, etc.

Sometimes it sucks having a clue.
At least I know you remember me in the end of the day.
*yawn* here comes the superflush know it all retards to ruin another thread. To bad you can't post a bunch of pictures of cars you couldn't afford the wheels on here to impress the TST gloryhole brigade.

Although this issue has been beaten to death, I would like to point out that the 02 Vette LS1 was weighed with the heavy ass cast iron manifolds. Removing those and going to a long-tube header saves 20+lbs.
No doubt about that. Recently helped put some Kooks on a car, and was reminded how light the aftermarket stuff was. Even the pacesetters are kinda clunky (yes, I know, the budget LS crap). Been a long time since playing in F body world.
