View Full Version : car bogs under 1500rpm... what gives?

I just replaced all 4 injectors, cleaned my IIC and MAF. The car is running well, but when I tap the gas whether it be in Neutral or 1st, it bogs a little before it revs up. Could it be because my plugs were a bit fouled (I was running way rich because I blew 2 injectors on 2 seperate occasions, they were pretty black), or because of something else?
I replaced my spark plugs and adjusted the idle and it runs better... but not perfect..
What kinda bog? in 1st? 2nd? if its 3-4-5 then yeah it bogs...
I don't drive under 2k ever!

Just in Neutral or 1st when I tap the gas or first accelerate off the line...

Are you still running rich? ...if so, then that's probably the answer.

I'm having the same problem.
The most obvious way to notice it is in neutral. I lightly press the gas pedal and the rpms drop from a good 1.5rpms to 1.0 or below sometimes. Also when shifting from 1st to 2nd and so on when you have the clutch down ready to make the shift and you tap the gas it has same bog or lag as described above. I know at least I suffer from this up to 4th. Havent really noticed on 5th.
I've only had this car a few weeks ('90 Coupe) and I admit I bought it as a lemon but its running way better now. If I can fix this it would be a blessing.
I have changed the following since purchase:
- Plugs (Denso)
- Wires (Bosch)
- Cap & Rotor
- PCV Valve
- Air Filter
- Oil & Filter of course
- Valve Cover Gasket
- Clutch Slave Cylinder
- Brakes all-around
Thats about all I can remember for the moment...
I will be doing the following for further maintenance next:
- O2 Sensor
- Fuel Filter
- Speed Sensor
- Idle Sensor
- Tranny Fluid & Filter
And I may need a new starter...
I will also cut off the speed and rev limiters cuz those are no fun...:boink:
Anyone know how to fix that bog?
:::::::EDIT:::::::
Im also running rich. Another problem that I have which may be related is that after running my car say 30 minutes and I get out to buy a pop at the store or whatever (a 3 minute shut down till I get back in the car) when I go to turn it on the car cranks but doesnt catch. I sometimes have to hold the crank for a good 30 seconds or more then the car starts to shake and vibrate a little until it catches on and then vrooooom. Even if I pump the gas pedal as I crank I get nothing. But then when the car finally turns on Ive released to much fuel into it and it runs rich and blows smoke a little bit. Smells like fuel real bad as I crank too.
Hopefully these are related problems with the same or similar fixes.
Thanks!

I have that exact same problem, Omar. I've changed everything you've changed minus the brakes. I've also changed the fuel filter and O2 sensor, none of them fixxed anything though. I think the injectors are leaking, I noticed a little puddle near mine and when I bought some fuel injector cleaner and put some premium gas in it, it ran great, had no problems at all. But now that I am not running premium (just 89) and no fuel injector cleaner it runs like poo again. I am going to check the injectors this weekend, I'll let you know if I can fix mine, let me know if you fix yours!
Well my car is running messd up right now.... I think I blew somthing... heheh got a check engine lite and the idle fuked.. ohh well.. I hope its the computer.. i wana replace it.

Take off the negative of your battery for 5 mins then put it back on and let it run for 5 mins. That will reset the computer. Hopefully it will fix it, my car was doing the same thing. But I did that and it worked. Since the computer was used top running off of only 2 injectors, it probably messed up the delivery of the fuel and also the air/fuel mixture. Try that and let us know.

Get this one... BIG SURPRISE FOR ME!!!
So my engine has a noise I beleived was an exhaust leak via exhaust manifold. Today however, as I kept driving thru the day it kept getting louder and louder and LOUDER so I decided to fiddle with the engine a little. I let it idle and popped the hood. Stopp there and listened trying to pin point the source. The noise is loudest from within the valve cover gasket. I then checked the engine oil dipstick... and to my surprise it is DRY LIKE A BONE! I couldnt beleive this! I double check.... same chit! Pop open the oil cap, all looks empty in there. Popped the little bit of oil I could find (1.5 bottles of 10w30) into it and the drove it around the block, noise is reduced 80%. Called my mech buddy up, sz he strongly beleives I have a bad lifter so I have to figure out which cylinder is bad and fix all that junk plus re shave the heads etc etc etc etc. So my engine problems havent been simple, I just plain purchased a straight up lemon.
:(
So I've decided to get rid of this engine/tranny get up.
My question to you guys is:
- Should I swap in another SOHC or go straight for an SR???
Biggest concern is reliability. Is an old SOCH KA loaded with miles more reliable than an SR? When I go to the shop for the SR swap (Im thinking of going with jdmspecperf.com cuz theyre somewhat local)will the SR come complete with all "basic maintenance" items already in perfect working conditions? E.G. All ignition parts working properly, All hoses checked and good, etc etc etc etc...?
My biggest fear is getting into another problem.
So for reliability... an SR swap or SOHC KA swap?
I wont be ready for SR swap until feb/march of '04 but if really needed I can pull some strings to do it sooner. If not a new "used" SOHC KA can be attained for a minimal price but with the risk of having it not be fully dependable.
