Build start.

Here is our project car. A 2005 C6 base. We would have used a ZO6 but Formula DRIFT won't allow aluminum chassis. Anyway.

http://omgdrift.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/omgvette.jpg

We then drove it around for about a week to get a feel for it. Our dog Turbo approves of the Corvette doggy bed in the back.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1183.snc4/150530_466556299102_553679102_5702508_199286_n.jpg

Once we had the car back in the shop we started removing the interior and other unnecessary items.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs356.ash2/63591_466678924102_553679102_5704026_7791189_n.jpg

Here is our base weight with the carpet, Seats, and Consol removed. The car has 3/4 of a tank of gas as well.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs730.snc4/65047_466664604102_553679102_5703854_7984855_n.jpg

Next we started on the bumpers and body panels. It is a treat to work on a car with a removable body.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1198.snc4/155021_466759794102_553679102_5705244_5330023_n.jp g

Now that we have a good portion of the chassis exposed we take a closer look to see any evidence of crash damage.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs571.ash2/149356_466760444102_553679102_5705250_6788844_n.jp g

Luckily everything looked great.

Since we are now sure the chassis is in good condition we started marking all the areas on the car that will be removed for weigh savings

Every panel is clearly marked with a red X and is documented and cleared with Formula DRIFT for approval.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1234.snc4/156650_467255234102_553679102_5713242_219086_n.jpg

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs826.snc4/68677_467256299102_553679102_5713256_7778823_n.jpg

After that was all figured out we went back and removed the Dash and the components under it.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs596.ash2/154851_467255314102_553679102_5713246_2657228_n.jp g

They sure manage to fit alot of stuff in these cars! The radiator and Ac condenser were removed along with the fan assembly. Then the steering column and wiring started to drop.

As it sits with the heater core/AC, blower assembly, Cats, Headers, Exhaust, Mufflers, Gas tanks, ABS, Pedals, Windshield, rear hatch, and window we are getting pretty light.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs413.snc4/47602_467185039102_553679102_5711765_6599813_n.jpg

Not bad for a car that still starts and drives. (well not far without a steering wheel or radiator)

Getting there.

Check back tomorrow for more updates!

hey i was wondering , in this build are you going to have the same hydro brake setup as in these camaros. They seem so conveniently place in stock location and still retaining stock functionality. just wanted to know how it was done.

Ok so today now that the steering tube position was finalized we measured everything up for the main hoop.

We use Bend Tech Pro here at the shop. It is a great program and makes making complex bends easy. It eliminates any errors in the design process and eliminates wasted material. That is the main reason we use it at Blu808.

Here is what we had come up with after taking some measurements.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1358.snc4/163032_468864414102_553679102_5737780_5080382_n.jp g

We then bent up the hoop in the bender.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs716.snc4/63662_468876409102_553679102_5738003_4835978_n.jpg

After a quick floor trace, flip, and cross measure to ensure everything was symmetrical we test fit it in the car.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs738.snc4/65860_468898084102_553679102_5738444_4198166_n.jpg

Fits perfect!

Now for the rear section. We were planning on removing the entire rear tub of the car, but were declined by Formula Drift due to the weight savings advantage it would provide. So to mount the rear tubes we were granted removal of 2 8"x10" sections.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs801.snc4/68138_468910949102_553679102_5738629_1576959_n.jpg

After some action with the cut off wheel out they came.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs473.ash2/74680_468911224102_553679102_5738637_4466121_n.jpg

Next order of business was to prep the area for plating. We grind down any high spots, and sand the entire area.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs598.ash2/155063_468917684102_553679102_5738712_479193_n.jpg

More updates tomorrow as we plate the rear section, fab up the down tubes, bend up the halo, and the A pillar bars.

Hope you have enjoyed our update for today.
I will leave you with a cool shot of the sunset we had here today at the shop.

We stayed late and started gutting out the doors so the roll cage can protrude into the shells.

We also removed the inner wheel house leaving behind the headlight and fender mounts.

Today we finished notching the tubes for the rear "X" brace and tacked everything up.

Also started chopping out some more of the plastic inner fenders to provide the steering clearance we need for drifting.

And yes. Our tool boxes here at Blu808 have Blue under glow.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs754.snc4/65446_471372264102_553679102_5774905_2363917_n.jpg

All of the body panels fit great. So it should only take some minor bracing for the fender supports.

More coming your way tomorrow!

We will be having a big announcement soon with our new drivetrain package.

Just got a shipment in from the guys over at LG Motorsports.

They sent over their Super Cool Radiator. The pictures do not do it justice. The end tanks are not sheet aluminum. It is actually fabricated out of what looks like 1/8" thick. Should be super durable and add that extra cooling that any race car would need. The execution of the setup is really well thought out. There are all sorts of tabs and brackets already welded onto the radiator so all the stock shrouding and fan will snap right into place. There are even provisions for the AC condenser. How cool is that?

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs715.snc4/63569_472619014102_553679102_5791785_4900444_n.jpg

The next item that we were really excited about were the LG Motorsports Super Pro Long Tube Headers. Again. The build quality on these headers is amazing. We have used these headers many times in the past and remain the first choice for many top racers in the industry.

Lou and the guys over at LG actually had to formulate a new production process just for the collectors. These are the only headers on the market for your Corvette that come with a true full race collector. Amazing!

This is really shaping up to be a fun build. We would like to invite everyone to come by the shop to check it out in person. We are located in the northern California area.

We also managed to get the halo bar bent up, notched, and fitted today!

Little update.

We have removed the hatch and the bodywork. We will be doing some modifications to the oem roll cage structure to provide proper head clearance with the new roll cage.

We did some mock up for the custom steering system tonight and we are able to get upto 55 degrees of steering angle with our setup. This should be very competitive.

Just received the LG Carbon ZR1 Splitter/Side Skirt Package. I must say that the fit and finish on these pieces is factory tight. I have dealt with many aftermarket body parts over the years, and can honestly say that these will bolt right on without any modifications. The sideskirts are autoclave produced and the weight next to nothing. The front lip features a complete under tray to improve on the GM design, and they reinforced the edges for added strength.

More pictures coming your way tomorrow!

We spent the evening bending up the "A" pillar bars for the cage and tacking everything into place.

The fit and finish turned out really great.

We always try to position the tubes with the drivers "line of sight" in mind. This configuration shouldn't add any blind spots.

I have a question about the door bars but right now I can't find the rules on my phone. I want to do door bars like you have done, but don't want to be redoing them if they are not compliant. I will get the rule quote up tonight cuz I want your interpretation since you have been there and done that.

Yes I quoted myself from earlier to save double posting.

Please interpret this.

This is from the 2011 FD Rule Book:

7.4.11 Side Protection:
All cars shall have a minimum of two (2) door bars across each front door opening. The door bars may run parallel, or in the shape of an “X”. If the two door bars do not intersect as they do when forming an “X”, then a minimum of two vertical tube sections shall connect the upper and lower door bars. Teams may also choose to install a second row of double horizontal door bars that run parallel to the inner bars and extend into the outer door skin, these are also known as “NASCAR-STYLE” bars. In this configuration, the outer bars must also have a minimum of two (2) vertical tube sections connecting the upper and lower bars. The inner door panel and door internals may be removed.

To me this says you can have NASCAR Bars that protrude into the door cavity, but you must also have another set of bars inboard of the NASCAR bars. So basically to gut the door you must have 4 door bars?!?!?

I really want to do NASCAR bars that protrude into the door cavity myself, but don't want to add more bars than needed.

It's worded weirdly for sure. NASCAR-style bars don't have inner and outer bars, they have upper and lower bars that then have to be connected with a minimum of two bars (those are the vertical bars). Luke's bars are a modified NASCAR bar, and have the two vertical bars... everything has been verified with Formula D throughout the build to ensure current and future legality.

Exciting stuff will be coming up soon, we've got the cage finished up (Zilvia fab'er Roco is over here from Ireland helping out!), fits absolutely perfect, is fully welded around every joint, and is integrated into the stock roll bar! It's rad.

Thanks Jordan for confirming what I thought was the case. I figured with so many Pro driver's doing it the way they are that the wording was screwy. They really should change the wording to be clearer. Pretty excited about doing nascar bars now!

I forgot to mention in my past post that you guys are building a stellar car! Keep up the excellent build quality.

Ksport says they're designed to be run at 20bar, but they certainly don't need that much to lift the car. In the video, we were running them off the shop compressor regulated at 90psi or whatever, but it wasn't ideal.

I know the plan was to use a nitrogen bottle, but Luke might be able to get away with a portable air tank I guess.

Why keep a reserve tank in the car, you're going to jack it in the pits why not use a portable air compressor, kind of a waste of space and unnecessary weight keeping a tank in the car to look baller.

Just saying.

The video updates kind of remind me of my wiring updates, in a nutshell I've watched 3 episodes of cage building with other stuff sprinkled in. And this is similar feedback from people not interested in drifting at all that I've shared with the build.

Try to switch it up in future videos or add more intuitive stuff and clean up the edits on the interview, less uh's and aaaaahs, and durs.

I enjoyed all of them, other people who I wanted to share these with just said they were about 10 minutes longer than any of them needed to be.

The tank is external, you'd carry it up to the car and plug it in, then open the valve - unless Luke needs the ballast weight in the back lol. Then we can plug in some type of solenoid and he can jack it up from inside I guess.

Traditionally all Blu808 race cars have a gray sprayed on the chassis and roll cage. For the Corvette we decided on a no glare 10% gloss black. It should provide excellent glare resistance for the night events we compete at and will have that stealthy look that only a Corvette could pull off.

Forgeline wheels is one of our primary sponsors of the Blu808 team. We are fortunate enough to have their support on the Corvette as well. As most of you know Forgeline makes some of the best wheels on the market, Their approach to function equals subsequent design that results in beauty is an unspoken motto for their wheels and it is why many professional racing teams choose Forgeline wheels. Dave from Forgeline was nice enough to custom make a set of the amazing GA3R competition "I-beam" wheels for our project in a stunning center spoke machine finish. Pictures do not do them justice. We will have more on these wheels soon.

Exedy is also one of the brands that we rely on for all of our race cars. The amount of R&D, time, and passion that goes into each Exedy product is astounding. Confidence is not something that can easily be purchased in most situations but it is money well spent in the clutch department. Not to mention they look really cool and are anodized PURPLE !!!

The Corvette is really coming together now that we are in final assembly.

Here you can see the KSport air jacks.

http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/hs038.snc6/166891_498551764102_553679102_6207038_1825102_n.jp g

The plumbing for the jacks.

The hard lines.

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/hs246.snc6/179423_498549034102_553679102_6207023_1112162_n.jp g

We also have teamed up with Aimsports for our data logging and display needs. The Carbon panel will be used to mount the Aimsports display.

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/hs056.snc6/168651_498073974102_553679102_6201219_5010068_n.jp g

We also finalized the KSport hydro ebrake assembly, steering column, and seating position.

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/hs276.snc6/180465_497640259102_553679102_6195948_2461420_n.jp g

Since the car is going to be a 10% matte black base coat we popped the headlights in the over at 220 degrees for 25 minutes to melt the glue and separate the lenses. We will then paint the silver part black.

http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/hs257.snc6/180513_497220584102_553679102_6190703_5245020_n.jp g

Finally the steering system is complete.

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs745.ash1/163787_495134349102_553679102_6162029_149732_n.jpg

The guys over at RPM Transmission are really helpful. They sent over the parts to upgrade the 08 Z06 differential to that of the new ZR1. We will be assembling the new diff with the added carbon plates, springs, and sliders. We have opted to not go with a OS Giken unit at this point.

http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/hs279.snc6/180713_494906309102_553679102_6159467_7179375_n.jp g

Before the body went off to paint we mounted up the LG Front Splitter. The fit is perfect on all the LG Body parts!

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/hs270.snc6/179805_494032054102_553679102_6149010_5176523_n.jp g

Here is the GT04XD dual disc clutch we will be using in the Vette. Exedy makes the best clutches on the market. The amount of engineering that goes into each of their clutches is what makes them the best. We can run the whole season on 1 and never have to worry about the durability.

Car drives really well, just some little stuff that should be worked out to make it a top contender. Luke's ahead of the rest of the field by a few weeks, most FD guys don't have their cars ready yet. Grats Luke, and I've always been proud to be part of the team.

I took a couple raw clips from my invitation out there. All I had was an Ipod so I figured what the heck.. I wanted to wait a while after everyone had published their posts about the unveiling. Car sounds BEASTLY, videos aren't doing it justice. I wish Luke & the Blue808/Jordan Innovations gang an amazing season with this car.

Luke and this car had a wild few weeks between Atlanta (where his 3rd or 4th Turn Key Engine Supply engine failed due to internal oiling issues) and Florida. LG Motorsports in TX built him a new engine, and Luke and his crew had to go out to TX and install it, get the car prepped, and drive all night to make it to Florida.

Hopefully you guys followed the Driftstream or his updates on Facebook, cause he killed it! Ended up going out in Top 32 to JTP, who won the event.

Congrats Luke on the C6 and qualifying so well at a brand new track!

06-12-2011, 07:15 PM
Thanks guys.

It has been a crazy start of the season. With our first two rounds being ruined because of our shitty Turn Key Engine Supply engine. It turns out the guys at Turn Key never installed the oil control plunger in the rear of the engine and that is what caused all the oil to bypass the crank and bearings. On top of that the Eagle crankshaft that I paid for turned out to be a PEP Chinese unit.

Scammers all the way. We are in the process of suing the shit out of them for all the damages, operating costs, and reputation damages we have suffered as a result of their fraudulent activity.

On a side not here is one of my best runs.
