89 with LSD?
Jsquared
08-31-2003, 01:58 PM
just to be sure, go into a BIG empty parking lot, crank wheel to one side, launch. i have seen open-diff cars leave 2 marks in a straight line before. doing it in a donut will be more precise :D

ok this is going to be long..... the vin number comes up as an 89. but the car came with a dual cam motor the 91 and up front bumper. the 91 and up wheels. the spoiler thing. and from what ive been told those options were never on an 89. so maybe i ahve a switched vin number. the title is a reconstructed title. i did a car fax on the vin and it said it had severe front end damage so i was thinking maybe they switched everything from the firewall and up with that from a 91+ S13. but that wouldn't explain the wheels and the spoiler.
any imput????

yeah im new to the 240 thing so which years had vlsd?
sykikchimp
08-31-2003, 02:37 PM
lol.. or he could just jack up the car,and spin one wheel, if the other spins the opposite direction, you have open diff.
240sxhed
08-31-2003, 02:45 PM
what if the other wheel doesnt' spin at all when the car is in neutral. is this open diff or VLSD. i would think VLSD because vlsds work because of fluid becoming more viscous between platesin the diff when the two wheels are spinning at different speeds therefore clamping the plates together and causing both wheels to spin at the same speed. so in saying that when the car is motion less on jack stands if one wheel is spun wouldn't the other remain still?????

one wheel spin
open open 24hr open diff

and open diffs can leave two stripes?
boro240
08-31-2003, 03:03 PM
open diffs can do a lot of things, nothing is a guarantee unless you open it up.
but the only cars that came with LSD were 91-93 SE fastbacks with Super HICAS.

Negative brudder
If you had HICAS you had vlsd, no doubt
BUT you could also have vlsd w/o hicas since it wa a dealer option, but how many ppl acutally sprung for it .. hmmm

The dashboard could have been replaced with an junkyard dash from an 89....but the car is really 91-93....(mine was...and I had to swap VIN plates). See if the dash VIN matches the one inside the door...not just the one on the title. To really know you'll need to jack up the entire rear and spin a wheel.

I had a broken open diff, and it left posi strips. The diff. always whined something awefull. I think the spider gears were binding really bad.

I've never checked w/ my 240, but my SW20 MR2 has an open diff and leaves two very lovely black stripes consistently.

Yah, my diff. made serious amounts of noise. I used to shift way too early thinking that I was winding the engine out. When I bought the car the diff. was almost empty...
I'm not sure if this is 100%, but the covers on my lsd and open diffs are different. If you post a pick I can probably tell you...
Either way, the best way to tell if you have a lsd is to jack the car up and try to spin a wheel. Beating on your car by doing donuts probably isn't the best of ideas.

If youre curious as to whether your car is a 89-90 or a 91-93, here are some more differences: 89 steering wheel doesnt have the plastic silver nissan logo on the horn button, as 91+ do. 89 speedometer goes to 115mph (dunno about marks/notches) in numbers, whereas 91+ speedometer only goes up to 110.

yep..you pay a premium for the 240 here though...their market value is higher since they are so rare. You should see the resale value too...phenomenal.

??
What to do?
Learn to extract every ounce out of your driving abilities with the one you have.
I do fine with what I have..it is not the car, it is the wheelhand and pedal pusher. This is where all the differences are. tools that aid are best understood when you do not have them and you find yourself doing very well.
The car can be improved. I find the cars limits, I balance with the cars limits and my limits with it. The combination is quite surpreme. I have no body or underbody damage and I have over 7000 miles of ralley and close to 3000 in drifting in my 240SX...so find your cars heart and work with and in that realm.

charles: awesome!! PM me about the helical diff. i have no idea what you need to do to get it to work!

One thing I must say. It is total meaninless to do any car improvement until you fully know the limit of the car and how to work around it. Improvements is starting over with your skills. You may find doing something to the car that makes the car better may make it bite harder and you did not fill out step 1 with enough experience to be able to fully develope step two. If I were give a full blown drift car, I would have no idea how my skills are since they have many many bite patterns I did not take the time to learn in the process. My best speak of this is I keep a stock suspention for my particular series of car. I use stock tires. I put 65 lbs in the back to make it 50/50 weight distribution. I use a passenger of 165 to 180 LBs. I have plenty of power , over 200HP at the rear wheels and I drifted since 1974 in the dirt...so I know how to feel a car out. I put mine in ideal stock conditions with 75% more power and then decided it was time to drift above 70 MPH as a regular thing. I knew I was ready and it was balls out and totally controlled and no dints or dings..I felt it was hanging out way too much because of baby step first trys but actually I got it back from the impossable each and every time so I know now the car and me are one with this level. Any modification to my suspention will mean a relearning at lower speed all over again.
You need to be patient or you will smack your ride up. Even the very best smack them. I will not smack mine as it is disapline at this point.
Can I do fabulous things (to me) with my car? YES..but it took hundreds of hours of careful study to do this and not ever smack my ride..or damage it.
The key is to be patient.
One day, you may see me drift..my goal is to keep the car from being smacked and head to 115 to 125 MPH drifts.
To drift at 110MPH will require RB power SR cannot do this.
At this point, I can only drift in the 65 to 85MPH range with my power. At 100MPH, the drift will go into understeer (regardless of suspention) due to being at power limit before.
I tryed it, I recovered. It was not kind to me..but no smacks...just a very terrible spinout and flat spotted tires.
High speed is so much more fun!
Track only!!
Bill Roberts
09-03-2003, 10:48 PM
PS..One day, we can have a car that can drift from 10MPH to over 200MPH controlled. That is what will happen to this sport that takes cars out and lives that do not consider all that can happen. I hate smacking a ride. So far the total goal is total control. At the speed you can do with your machine. It is best for the machine to be the limiting factor..stay 7 steps ahead of it.
Their is a game called chess. Learn its ways.

Yep chances are, you have a 91-93 240SX. You got the rims, spoiler, front bumper, engine, speedometer, and steering wheel of a 91-93 240SX. I don't know what other differences to look for. Odd that someone would change the VIN....
Oh yeah i almost forgot. Open the driver's door and check the tag that is located in the driver's door well. It should say the month and year the car rolled out of the factory (my 1991 S13 has a date of 9/90, Sept 1990). Of course, that could have been swapped as well, which would give your car quite the illegal history.

Just making sure that I am correct. Seing as how I have a 1991 with super Hicas you are saying that I have the VLSD. Just checking to make sure that I was reading everything right.
