I haven't heard about using the Q45 diff but I have the J-30 diff in my S-14 and I didn't modify anything to install it. I have a 96 and I used a 95 J-30 diff.

the j-30 is front wheel drive right (its the same as an altima...right?)  its there anything diff. about front lsd than rear lsd?

i30 is front wheel drive it is uses the vq30de engine....the j30 uses the vg30de engine...same as 300zx and is rwd <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

q45's have the 5 bolt flanges. Our cars have 6 bolt . 95 and up J30's have 6 bolt like ours.

Pauls LSD swap on 240sx.org is kinda inaccurate it has some good info and some stuff thats not quite right.
NOw yes a J30 VLSD 95 and up will bolt into our cars. On S14's its a direct bolt in. On S13's we need to shorten our driveshafts one inch due to the abs sensor making the diff one inch longer.
Q45 VLSD 's have 3.92 gears and 5 bolt flanges both s13 and s14 have 6 bolt flanges so to use a q45 vlsd you would have to swap the flanges. that gets pricey.

only late model cars in Japan and Europe . I do not think any of the ones sold over here in the states did except for maybe the newest 2001-2002 models.

dont mechanical lsd's hook up quicker than vsld's cause they use a liquid to transfer the torque?

yes they do . they are also a lot more expensive and are noisy . They really are not necessary on street cars IMHO . S15's did come with them . helical to be exact.
