There are 5 times as many conflicts in the first 10 years of the 21st century as there was inn the 20th and 25 times as many people have died as a result of conflict.

The world is farther from peace then it has ever been. The statistics of the 20th century are beyond numbing.

I doubt it. North Korea =/ Iraq. It would be a full on Division on Division war comparable to what we saw in WWII and Korea. The NK Army is not a push over third rate military, and the terrain is nightmarish.

Also, with fanaticism rivaling islamic terrorism or the Walfen SS...and in position of a nuclear arsenal... I doubt they would think twice about nuking the entire peninsula + Japan when they realize they are defeated.

PS: While Obama has done a great job ignoring one of our strongest allies, it would be impossible to ignore a SK v NK war, especially seeing we have an entire US Army Division along the DMZ.

PPS: Koreans fought along side us in Korea, Vietnam and provide aid/support for both Iraqi wars and Afghanistan.

Type-O, First 10 years of both centuries. At the dawn of the 20th century, it was "common knowledge" that science and civility of modern industrial man would bring about unparalleled peace and prosperity.

It brought the bloodiest 100 years of human existence and depraved savagery the mankind has ever seen.

This isn't all that uncommon.

Fires have been exchanged sporadically across the DMZ since the armistice was signed in '53.

North Korea would've ceased to exist long ago if the Chinese hadn't continued to prop up the regime in the form of military and economic aid.

If anybody ever really wanted to solve the "Korean Question" they'd address the proverbial elephant in the room: China.

But hey, we need cheap shit and the Chinese have us by the balls, so whatever.

Most likely because obama ignored him for the most part in that Asian trip of his.
It's not like shit like this hasn't happened before.
It's probably not going to escalate too much further because it's not in Chinas economic interest to do so.

No it won't. You'll never see that kind of warfare ever again. You can't move formations of that size in open combat when someone or other has clear air superiority (which would be decided within days, most likely).

At any rate, it won't escalate there. No one wants a nuclear exchange, the North is just rattling sabers. This is a negotiation tactic, albeit a bizarre and probably ineffective one.

We will see military coup d'etat in the DPRK before we see open warfare.

I don't think anything is different.
Kim is a despot and predictably acts like one.
His health appears to be failing, and accordingly he names his son to be successor.
That's not a surprising decision at all IMO.

The only intesting question is what the USA and China are going to do about it.
North Korea is just a buffer state and puppet to China IMO.
Realistically China probably doesn't want to go war with the US, at least not yet.
It might be a good time for the US to flex it's muscle however and show the Chinese who's boss.

My impression is that overall China doesn't have a good reputation among Americans.
(whether that's actually the case is certainly debate-able)
Off-shoring of jobs, esp in the manufacturing sector would probably be one of the main concerns.
I personally don't have a lot of faith in the US getting back manufacturing jobs anytime soon, with or without China.
I have nothing against them here.

I also have no problem with China or anyone else devaluing their currency, based on my understanding of the situation.
Even the US does this, although it's just a matter of printing more $$$.
Whether or not they buy up our debt is a good or bad thing for the US is something I haven't decided yet.
If it serves to drive up the value of the dollar, then I'm more inclined to support it.
I think the US should consider improving the trade deficit to it's favor, through other means other than devaluing the dollar.

Korea to build nuclear centrifuges and in some sense say, hey we got resources and know-how and we probably have nukes already but we will never tell. Does any one else see the problem with this situation? How come this isn't being treated with the same urgency as we did in Iraq or is it that the U.S. has some other agenda. N. Well, N Korea is backed by China
(do some research on the Korean war of the 1950's, fun stuff).

Iraq is not really backed by anyone.
It's actually Bush & the neo-cons who were incredible stupid,
using an excuse that was easily proven wrong; wmd,
Bush (like some presidents before him) should have used 'violation of human rights' to go to war.

China is just playing games with the US,
testing how far they can push without repercussions imo.

That's my guess, not claiming to be an expert by any means.

Easy answer here; there's no interest for us to invade N.K.

They don't have oil like Iraq does.

Same thing applies to other countries; atrocities that are committed in places like Rwanda go unnoticed and go on for years. If there was a genocide happening in another country where there may be some type of gain for us we would be knocking on their doors or better yet kicking it down.

No one cares about certain countries because there IS NO INTEREST for us to go in and do anything about it if there is no gain.

I can look at it from our perspective and say well why should we go in if there's no benefit for us?

And I agree that we should get something out of it.

What I don't agree with is the fact that we cover shit up as if we are going in for humanity's sake and just trying to keep everyone civil.

But then if we did tell the truth the PETA type war fanatics would have an outcry and we'd still be pissing off a certain group.

War is lose lose any which way you look at it.

The only good thing that comes from it is that it creates employment in some cases.
