View Full Version : Hit curb, car is now super unstable.
I recently hit a curb with my front left wheel. I hydroplaned in the rain on an off ramp, but I was able to counter-steer and brake to get my car almost parallel with the curb before hitting. I messed up the lip of the wheel pretty bad, and replaced the wheel with a new one. I checked the arms when I installed the new wheel and nothing "appeared" to be bent. The camber and alignment still look good. I did notice a slight vibration in the front end around 60-65mph. The worst effects though is that when I brake heavily, the whole rear of the car feels light and like its going to whip around. The front end seams super twitchy now also. I'm wondering, what is the most likely component to have been bent? The tension rod, FLCA, or is there anything else?

id almost always put my money on a tie rod.
sounds like maybe you messed the wheel bearing...
get an alignment, then if things still feel wack, start getting curious.

Why would you not get an alignment Takumi?
" nothing "appeared" to be bent. The camber and alignment still look good"
^You got laser leveling eyes or something?
Just take it in and they will tell you what you need to replace.
If you cant drift, then get to the track.
The event yesterday was $80, a lot cheaper then how much your drift attempt is gonna cost you in the end.
I had to get the tofu to the hotel bro. Nice assumption that I was drifting btw.

If it's twitchy it would probably be a tierod.

That shit just doesn't happen.
When you hydroplane, it means you were being a bad driver.
They just made a name for driving bad in wet conditions.

Only way to know for sure is either jack the car up, crawl underneath & check to see if you spot any damage or take it into the shop & have them do it for you.
As for your vehicle hydroplaning in the rain, how much tread depth do you have on your tires?? Are your tires properly inflated?? Are the tires from the same manufacturer or are you running different brands??
Hydroplaning can occur for several different reasons...some beyond the control of the driver...Don't believe me...read for yourself...Answers.com - What causes cars to hydroplane in the rain (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_causes_cars_to_hydroplane_in_the_rain)
Hydroplaning (tires) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroplaning_%28tires%29)
Anyhow, hope this helps....

I just test drove a 240sx... same thing as you mention above.
When I brake from high speed around 70mph the steering wheel and pretty much the front end shakes. Notice the right fender (passenger side) were replaced but never know what happen before cause still have clean carfax.
I was thinking maybe it need alignment? bad rotor?.... cause car pull to the right (passenger side)

pretty hard to say whats wrong with it. if you don't see any noticeable bents on the arms, i would check the other parts (ball joint, wheel bearings, arm bushings, subframe, tie rod). i also get an alignment just to make sure.

I hit a curb a while back and had the same problem.
Replaced both the tie rod and lower control arm and everything was back to normal.
Usually a vibration like that is from a bad ball joint, either in the Tie Rod end or Lower Control arm. Checking those two things are pretty easy, takes about 10 minutes max.

i did something similar to this and luckily got my car pretty parallel to the curb before i hit it and i bent my inner tie rod. easy and inexpensive fix. good excuse to change the boot too.
