Well guys, I've been a member on here for a while and I've always been a Honda guy but a few years ago I decided to pick up a 97 S14 off an old buddy and this is it's story.

I bought the car around July of 08 pretty much stock, drove it around for about a month, then decided it wasn't good enough so the tear down began.

This is how she looked when I got her.

This was the initial build plan. Turbo the stock KA24DE and see how that felt...

First came the parts...

Then the tear down and rebuild.

Well, the KA had 220k on it so I didn't expect it to last long... And it didn't. It got out of the driveway, then it blew up.

Oh well. Time to rebuild... Again.

At this time I was working out of town about 9 months out of the year so I didn't have the time to do any of the work to the car myself. I also had a CBR954RR that kept me pretty occupied and put the 240 on back burner for a while.

Because I was gone so much I decided to do a swap through a local shop. And so, while I was working in Cleveland, this happened.

RB25 FTW

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs228.snc4/38720_1380540075987_1306470009_30939091_6998304_n. jpg

I won't get into specifics but around this time the car was in the hands of a "friend" of mine and to make a long story short, my front end, my blown motor and turbo kit, my seats and other miscellaneous interior parts "disappeared".

So, being that I'm captain positive, I said screw it! New wheels and tires, Bride seats and an S15 front end conversion were in my garage within a week.

So that's how the car sat for another seven months while I left to work out of state yet again.

Then I quit my job... Finally, I can work on the 240 again!

Well, sorta.

Apparently when you quit your job they stop paying you. Who'd have thought that would happen?

Unfortunately, this led me to the difficult conclusion that I had to sell my 96 Accord DD project. :( It still bums me out sometimes to think of that car. It had so much potential...

Oh well.

At least I got $1200 for it.

The next day I picked up everything I'd need to do a 5-lug conversion and ordered an S15 core support from Nissan, then got on the horn and riled up some friends to help me weld it in and and fab up a charge pipe for me.

We were done with the core support and piping in two days and then I finally got to drive my beast, after having a running RB25 in the car for nearly a full year I finally got to drive it! I couldn't believe the power. I took it down the road and it was tearin up the tires through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd! --- Oh wait, that's because the vacuum line came off the wastegate and it was peaking at 27psi on the gauge... :scared:

Well, 5 minutes later we were back down to the stock and very safe boost level of 6psi. And thankfully, I didn't have another blown motor on my hands after 300ft of road use.

After that frightening episode I decided it was time to grab my trusty Nikon and snap a few quick shots of her. Unfortunately I left my ISO setting on HI so they turned out really grainy.

I got it running just in time to take it to a local drag/drift event called Midnight Madness @ Gateway Intl. Raceway.

The car was in no condition to drift, mostly because they are really strict on safety and my car didn't have seatbelts or a working e-brake, so I was relegated to the "Hard Parking" area in the pits where I got to let everybody ogle her all night long.

It was on this 120 mile round trip that I discovered my highway fuel mileage was in the single digits. :ugh: I knew it was running rich but damn! Something was wrong. And thus began the research.

As it turns out, when you put a Wahlbro 255 fuel pump on an RB with a stock FPR you end up pushing 12psi of fuel over the stock rating across the board and your injectors start leaking.

So, adjustable FPR: Check.

As of right now I'm still waiting on a few things to show up. (Adj. FPR fuel rail adapter, passenger seat bracket, HID's, wheel spacers, and other random crap that I need)

Since the car was gonna have some downtime I decided it was time to start the 5-lug conversion.

After I got that one done I started the others and ended up ****ing up the threads on my ball joints when I hammered them out of the old spindles so now I need to either bevel the top edge of the bolt or get a tap and die set and try to re-die the threads.

Well, now I have some more down time so I started thinking about the badass vertical two-tone I had going on and decided it was time to fix it... After discussing the pro's and con's of three stage or single stage paint job with a friend who works at a body shop I decided to take option 3 and wrap the front end in black vinyl!

Hmmm... So since I'm still waiting for parts, it's time to add some color to my basically all-black beauty.

What color could it be?... Hmmm... Methinks PURPLE! HKS Purple to be exact.

BTW, if anyone is interested in the difference between VHT's and DupliColor's anodized purple, here ya go. Both have 4 coats of purple over the same silver base.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1145.snc4/148792_1483499129899_1306470009_31157209_7597813_n .jpg

So now that I got the purple outta my system I had to come up with something to occupy myself until my parts get here.

I know!

Car cover.

I had a huge bolt of tan microsuede layin around and I know how to sew, so why not, right?

About 30 yds of fabric and 4 hours later...

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1121.snc4/148357_1483499249902_1306470009_31157210_762882_n. jpg

Well, that's all I have to report for now. Hopefully the rest of my parts will be here by the start of next week and I'll be able to get everything buttoned up and rollin.

First on my agenda is to do a proper photoshoot for the old girl. I've had the car for going on 3 years and I've never done a photoshoot for myself. That's quite odd if you know how nuts I can be about photoshoots.

Here are some samples of my work.

For sure. Looks good. I'm from the St. Charles area. Is that Chris's green hatch? I don't know if he still has it but the 89 ef hatch that he had was mine previously.

What kind of tails are those? I just ordered my dmax LED tails and were wondering if they are the same ones.

Haha, yes, that was Hanley's Civic, although it actually belongs to my buddy Tommy now. They traded Civic for an Integra.

And yes, they are the DMAX tails. Surprisingly that's what I'm getting the most crap for is having those tails on the car.

I would like to say, before you all assume, that when I got the car it had some crappy old faded and busted up Zenki tails on it, NOT KOUKI TAILS!

I would never swap a good set of Kouki tails for the LED's; just wanna let that be known.

blueshark is correct, it "disappeared" with the rest of the front end panels.

I'm behind the engine swap! I'm not feeling the straberry face conversion...Anyways keep it going! Any major engine plans?

The front end wasn't my initial plan for the car but after the Kouki front "disappeared" I asked my buddy Dewey from JDMHookup.com and he got me the S15 panels (minus the headlights) for a pretty reasonable $1100, then I sourced the headlights from an old friend in Japan for $350 so it ended up being less than I would have paid for a Kouki front end in good condition.

As for engine plans, I don't have anything major planned yet, and to be honest, I'm probably gonna sell the car so I can start my dream RWD Honda Prelude project. But I'm gonna wait until I get the right price for the car.

True, Kouki sides would be very nice. And some decent rear valances as well.

I've been looking for some good looking front lips for the stock s15 front bumper but I haven't had much luck.

I don't particularly care for the Greddy front lip.

I'm open to some suggestions if you guys can think of any.

Thanks for the props. It's nice to see that someone appreciates the effort I've put into the car.

Unfortunately things haven't quite turned around for me yet. I actually just got out of the hospital. I've been having odd heart problems for about a week now and I started getting major chest pains today around noon. It got to the point where I decided an ER visit would be a good idea.

The pain went away after some morphine and they discharged me but I have to go back tomorrow to get a full battery of tests and get a 24hr event monitor put on to see just what's going on with my heart.

The doc says to stay away from stress... That's easier said than done these days but I'll do my best. It may mean putting the car on back burner again for a month or so but as long as my heart keeps tickin after I straighten out my health problems it'll be worth the downtime.

On a lighter note, I took a heat gun and tore apart my old Zenki tails so I can convert them to full LED (including making the center panel functional). I randomly bought a bag of 5000 red LEDs a couple years ago so I think I'll finally put them to good use.

I'll post up some pics of the progress and finished product after I paint and re-clear them.

Who knows, if they turn out well (and I think they'll look amazing) I might offer it as a service. It'll make your "crappy" Zenki tails look way more pimp than any Kouki or aftermarket setup out there.

And I sure as FUCK won't charge $1500 like clearcorners.com does (overpriced bastards).

Well guys, it's finally coming along again. I had a job, for about 3 weeks, then I got laid off. But that was long enough to get my lower control arms. I've been working on it off and on for the last week and tonight I finished putting the rear suspension together and I'm almost done with the front. I'm missing a collar for one of the ball joint shanks so once I find a place that sells them I'll put an order in for one. Yesterday I took my rotors to have them turned and guess what! They've been done before and are to thin to turn again. Great! I'm out of money and I need new rotors now.

Oh well, that's as good an excuse as any to get some slotted rotors for the car, so what's another couple weeks. I should be starting a new job at CitiGroup as soon as my background check and drug tests go through so now I can start getting some money and get back to work on the car.

So I realized that I, in my infinite wisdom, set the MAF in a blow-thru configuration when I made my "I'm-too-broke-to-afford-an-intercooler" cheater pipe and that, combined with my stock FPR, has been causing all the drivability issues so I've finally decided that before the car sees the road again I'm gonna have to crack down and get a front mount. After I get one I'm gonna switch back to a draw-thru MAF configuration since I'll probably stick with a recirculated BOV. (BTW, I've decided I don't want an SSQV so I'm getting rid of it. It's a Series 2 and it comes with an aluminum flange and an O-ring. All it needs is a C-clip and it's good to go. PM me if you're interested.)

I've been hesitant to get an FMIC because if I got a same-side inlet/outlet intercooler I would have to get a new one when I get a new intake manifold, and I don't have the room to plumb piping back around to the stock intake manifold if I used a standard intercooler but I think I've found a solution. I'll get a twin turbo intercooler that has four inlets (2 on each side) which split the core into a top half and bottom half. For now I can have the charge go into the top inlet, flow thru the top half of the intercooler, come out the other side, make a u-turn, come into the bottom half, and flow out the bottom inlet, thus effectively making it the same as a same-side inlet/outlet intercooler. Then, when I get a new intake manifold, I can just have the charge piping split into a Y and flow thru the top and bottom half and then have another Y on the other side. Problem solved.

So, to get the car back on the ground and driving I need to:

(deep breath)

get the front driver side suspension finished
get new rotors
get new brake pad clips
bleed the brakes all around
dial in the suspension close enough to get it to an alignment shop
get the car aligned
put the interior back together
find the bolts to mount the seat bracket
figure out how to mount the seat TO the bracket
dial in the fuel pressure
get an intercooler
make some charge piping
wire up the HIDs

AND, (maybe)

take the projectors apart and fix the RHD cutoff

Whew.

I've had some tentative interest on buying the car from a guy in Wisconsin but nothing is definite yet so I'm going to continue on as I would normally. But, let's just say if he gives me what I'm asking, the next set of pictures may be the last I post on this thread. Then it would be time to get another bike and start my "Drift Prelude" project. :D But for now, it'll stay business as usual.

So that's what's up at the moment...

Keep your fingers crossed and hope that I don't hit any more snags. As soon as the car is on the ground and drivable I'll get some pics and post them up (I'm hoping for sometime within the next 2 weeks)

The fenders are purpose made FRP conversion fenders. I'm not sure what brand they are since I got them straight off a container from Japan.

If you use OEM S15 metal fenders you have to splice in the back half of an S14 OEM fender (the half where the fender meets the door)

A body shop could do it but it would be pricey. Unless you're looking for Concourse quality panel gaps I'd say just get Origin conversion fenders.

I know what you mean. I've been in a 400hp SR and a 400hp RB and there's just no way to describe the difference. It's not exactly faster, it's just the way it delivers the power. It's a much more satisfying surge than a 4 cyl.

My favorite bit is the sound though. I think the RB is one of the best sounding platforms ever. If I could ever find one I'd love to do an RB30/25 hybrid. But those RB30 blocks are a BITCH to get in the states.

UPDATE - 7-11-11

So I got home from work Friday night and checked the mail and the last of my suspension parts finally showed up! I was planning on working overtime on Saturday but I ended up staying up til 11am putting the old girl back together... So much for overtime. Lol

So I got the suspension done and the wheels on so the car could finally get out of it's "Jack stand Ballin" phase and back on the ground. I was eyeballing everything as far as alignment goes and it obviously wasn't close enough. Haha. The passenger rear wheel has almost perfect camber but I can't tell just by looking at it what the toe is like. The driver rear has about neg 3 degrees camber but that's no big deal right now. The front on the other hand... Ya, I have no idea where the tensions rods should be or the control arms. So right now because I had the control arms adjusted all the way in the front wheels are toed out by about 15-20 degrees! HAAAHAHAHA. It looks all janky right now but I'll get up under there to dial it in a little more so I can at least get it on a trailer and to the alignment shop.

The main reason I need to dial it in more is so I can take it to a nearby parking lot and lightly throw it around a little bit so I can get the suspension to settle before I get it aligned. It's been sitting slack for almost a year and I'd be willing to bet it'll drop another half inch before it's done settling.

As for now the immediate plans are to get the rear brake pads in and bleed the brakes, dial in the alignment a little more, get the car aligned, get the new intercooler in and fab the charge piping (and put the MAF back in a draw-thru position), get a NISMO FPR and dial in the fuel pressure, and that should be it! It'll be good to drive; at least for now.

The tentative plans for the future are to pull the motor out for the winter and put some forged internals in it. While the motor's out I'll work on cleaning up/respraying the engine bay and MAYBE doing a RHD conversion courtesy of my boy Dewey and JDMHookup.

Anyway, that's all for now. I'm hoping to have the car aligned by the end of this week and then I'll get some pics up for you guys. After I have the intercooler and FPR sorted out I'll do a proper photoshoot to post up here too.

I'll be back with an update (and pics) soon *crosses fingers*

UPDATE!!!

So here's what I've got done recently.

New wheel hubs and bearings are in the rear, wheels and tires are on, and the new FMIC and charge piping is in (MAF is back in the proper position so the car runs great now).

After driving the car a bit I've found that the passenger rear strut is blown so every time I get on it, the back end squats down and the wheel well tears up the tires. IF IT'S NOT ONE THING, IT'S ANOTHER.

So now I need to decide if I want to just replace the blown strut and continue with the lowering spring setup I have or invest in a good set of coilovers and have to wait another couple of months before I can drive the car. GRRRRRR I DON'T KNOW! Input? What do you guys think.

Anyway, I busted my ass getting the charge piping on so it could be ready for a car show this past weekend and, for once, nothing went wrong. I gave the old girl the best cleaning I've ever done and drove to the show (even though the show was only 4 blocks from my house, lol)

Didn't win shit, but at least I participated.

Anyway, after I got it running I snapped a few quick shots at the old photoshoot location to use as a progress contrast to the way it used to look. (Please note these were taken before the intercooler went on)

Enjoy the pics and keep the comments coming, they motivate me to keep going.

I'll post better pics eventually, I just need to decide what to do next.

I think the car sits pretty well right now considering it doesn't have any lips or side skirts on it. I'm ok with how low it is for now, but I definitely want to lower it more when I get a front lip, side skirts and something for the rear. It all comes down to money right now.

I think I want to go with Stance LX+ Coilovers but they're about $1300 so I'll have to save up for a bit (or find someone to buy my 8-string guitar :D)

As for the Purple HID's, I love them to death and they look cool as hell when you're looking at the car, but the color temperature is 25,000k so the light output is awful. I can hardly see shit at night. So I'm going to replace them with 6000k high and low beams and replace the running lights with purple LEDs to keep the purple theme flowing.

Nope. The fenders are FRP. I honestly have no idea who made them. I got them from my friend Dewey at JDMHookup.

I admit I am an absolute pic whore so you guys will just have to deal with it. ;)

I also forgot to take off the UV filter so the light points were shifting and ghosting on the pics... Oops.

EDIT: If you're going to start reading this post, please read it all the way through... Thx guys.

For some reason I'm obsessed with finding the cheapest parts I can that do what I need them to. I will be the first to admit that Godspeed stuff isn't the best in the world, and I did have a little trouble coercing the rear lower control arms into place, but they do what they need to. While the welds may not be the prettiest in the world, they're solid and I don't foresee them breaking unless I slide into a curb, in which case I'd bet money they'd hold up better than the stock parts.

At the same time, there are many parts that I won't cheap out on, like wheel hubs and bearings (I got factory replacements rather than the cheapest ones on eBay). It all comes down to what each persons' personal opinion of the best compromise is. Only an individual will know how they will drive their car and will decide on the quality of their parts accordingly.

I personally never intend to track my car. I'll go to drift events with friends and slide around a couple of times and I'll slide around a bit on the street as we all do from time to time, but I don't necessarily need parts that can withstand constant abuse, so Godspeed seemed to be the right choice for my situation.

That being said, I will certainly be the first to tell you guys if anything breaks on me under normal driving conditions. I'll just have to put on my flame suit and bear the brunt of the majority of Zilvians on their high horses filling up my build thread with "I-told-you-so's"

I fully understand the risk I take in choosing less-than-premium parts so I don't need anyone to explain the error of my ways to me.

josephin, I know you're not trying to give me crap about this, so I'm not aiming this response at you, this is aimed more towards the people who will look at this thread and go to the corral to hop on their high horse and make their opinions known. Also, this next part is not aimed at you in particular, josephin; I just want to say it...

To the haters who don't like the S14.5, I love you all, but you seem to have confused your personal opinion with fact.

I would be willing to bet that many of you who subscribe to the belief that "S15>Kouki>Zenki>S14.5" only do so because someone who you respect or some of your friends told you that's how they felt and you just jumped on the bandwagon with them.

A forum such as this is a double-edged sword. It is a wonderful place where people who enjoy working on their cars can come together to share the knowledge and experience they have gained over the years with those who are new to things in the hope that they will some day be able to help those who need it...

On the other hand, it can become a place where personal opinions can be influenced by the opinions of "the majority", so much so that some will actually buy parts for their car based SOLELY on the opinions of others, NOT because it's something they want.

I believe that the majority of us were all ricers at some point in our lives, a long time ago we thought The Fast and the Furious was cool along with all the gaudy paint, neon, chrome wheels, body kits, graphics, and big wings that came with it. Everything changes as your passion for cars matures, but never compromise your own style because someone on a forum disagrees with it.

I am never afraid to admit when I'm wrong, or when I've made a mistake. God knows I've made plenty of them in the past, but that's part of life. You just learn your lesson and make sure you never make the same mistake twice.

When I build a car, I do it the way >>>I<<< want to, not the way everyone in the scene THINKS it should be built. If we all build our cars according to what's most socially accepted they would all look the same and shit would get boring.

To those of you who have posted saying that you like what I've done with the car, I just want to say thanks, and I hope you continue to like what I do with it in the future. And if you don't, that's ok too. You're completely entitled to your opinion, but keep in mind, I built MY car for ME, so please don't hate.

I always appreciate CONSTRUCTIVE criticisim, but as everybody's mommas once said "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"

Also, thanks to everyone saying it's a clean S14.5...

I do intend to eventually get a Greddy front lip, some form of side skirts, Origin widebody fenders, and some type of rear bumper. So I hope that doesn't ruin it for you. As always, I'll keep the style as clean as I can.

I've been tossing this idea around in my head for a while so tell me what you guys think.

After I get all the body parts I need and get the dents straightened out I've been thinking of wrapping the car in 3M Dinoc White Carbon Fiber Vinyl and maybe doing the roof (from the A and C pillars up) in regular black Carbon fiber vinyl.

I need to re-skin my roof because some dick who had the car before me put an aftermarket sunroof in it and the whole roof panel is warped and the whole installation is just CRAP so I'm debating if I want to just suck it up and pay to have the whole car resprayed black (which I won't be able to afford for a while) or just wrap the whole thing (which would be significantly less expensive and I think would look kinda cool)

Post up your opinions folks, I wanna hear what you think (haters can get in on this too, if you'd like)

I think that's actually a pretty good idea for the immediate future. I looked at a few slammed kouki's on factory skirts and I gotta say damn! Particularly in black.

Now I'm thinking instead of going aero with the skirts and rear bumper I'll just go with Kouki skirts, rear bumper and valences. Do you guys think the Greddy front lip would line up with Kouki skirts? Or would it be lower than the sides?

If it would line up with the sides that would be perfect. I'd still go with widebody fenders so I could run the same wheels in the front and the back (+1 for concave on the front)... Then all I would need is a C-West trunk spoiler and I'd be set!

What do you guys think?

The fenders are FRP, no idea what brand they are.

As for fabrication, it's pretty straight forward. Cut out your old core support by drilling out all the old spot welds holding it in, buy a brand new S15 core support from a Nissan dealership, and weld it in where the old one used to be. Everything lines up and, as long as your frame is straight, it shouldn't take any modification.

As for the headlight brackets, I'd say look for a pair of headlights that come with brackets. That's the way I got mine. I'm sure it's possible to fab up a bracket to make them fit, but it would be a pain in the ass.

As far as I know, it is possible to do a conversion without swapping the core support, but I would highly recommend against it. You'll have to do a load of cutting and bracket fabrication and there's still a good chance that in the end, it won't line up perfectly. Core supports aren't that expensive, and it's not that hard to swap in. It took me and a friend about 3 hours to swap them out and a good hour of that was spent dicking around and bolting up the fenders, bumper, and headlights. I got mine for about $225, and that's a small price to pay to have your front end line up. And if you're going to do the conversion, the front end is something people will be paying close attention to when they look at the car; you don't want them to be looking at crappy fitment and panel gaps.

I'm pretty sure this was the only picture I took that night.

I just cut holes in my S14 core support for my S15 headlights. When you use the OEM headlight brackets all will line up fine. Look in my thread for my front end conversion.

What I meant was, I have pics of my finished conversion with the stock S14 core support. You just have to cut two rectangular holes behind the headlights. You will see for yourself when you hold the S15 headlights in front of the core support. The S15 headlight brackets will fit in the center piece just fine. It's not necessary to use the S15 core support.

@K'netic: Car looks great!

Well, I figured I'd go ahead and let you guys know that the car was sold back in November. I was only able to get $8600 for her, but I guess that's not so bad. It was enough to hire a lawyer to take care of my issues with the IRS so I can't complain too much.

Sadly, the kid who bought it wrecked on his way back home to KC. Thankfully, he and his friend were both unharmed. I don't know the specifics, but it was raining REALLY bad that day and apparently the car went into the median on Hwy 70 where they have that "metal posts with wire strung between them" thing going on.

It's gut-wrenching to see something you've put so much effort into destroyed in a matter of hours, but I can only imagine what he's going through right now, having wrecked a car you just took a $9k loan on BEFORE you have insurance on it. It was hard to get rid of it; even harder to look at the pics when he sent them to me.

It's still hard to look at them, even after almost four months.

Since then I've picked up a couple of old Honda CB750's to work on. Here's the link to my build thread on SOHC4.net:

New guy! My 75 K5 and 76 F1 Projects... LOTS of pics... UPDATED 3-3-12 (http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=100053.0)

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/s720x720/418975_2608722019768_1306470009_32175224_437745404 _n.jpg

I actually just traded one of my project bikes (the 1976 CB750 F1 Super Sport) for a VVTI 2JZ-GE with a blown head gasket. I'd traded $140 and a couple old guitars for the bike, so I think it was a pretty good deal.

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/s720x720/401113_2673637602617_1306470009_32197355_959548060 _n.jpg

The tentative plan for now is to take my time building the motor for boost, find an old 1st generation 71-77 Celica Coupe, put the two in a blender, and make a nasty ass street car.

But I'm quite a ways away from being able to make that happen (financially, at least) so my plans can, and probably will, change before anything actually happens with the motor.

My main focus right now is getting the bike project done and figuring out what my best option is for a daily driver. I have a 2000 Accord V6 coupe and a 1991 Civic Wagon 4WD. The Accord desperately needs a new trans, and the Civic could really use a new motor (it's got almost 500k on the clock).

I just need to decide which one stays and which one goes...

Long story short, the 240's gone and I've moved on to other, less expensive projects. There is, however, one important lesson I've learned from the 240 build, it's that if you want to drift, build a damn missile. In order to build and maintain a car that works will on the street, looks good, and can drift well, you'd better have REALLY deep pockets. And I DON'T have deep pockets. Hell, right now I'm so broke I don't even have pockets!

Don't worry about me though, guys. I'll get back into the RWD game eventually. It may take a little while, though. I really need to get the rest of my life in order before I end up in a bad state financially. Selling the 240 was the first step in that process.

God, I hate growing up!

Priorities suck dick.
