anyone drift or race r/c cars?
any interest in ready to run combos?
my friend has a r/c store and I mentioned some interest in r/c drifting from people on this forum. He mentioned that he could put together a ready to run set for people if there was interest. But, the better the parts, the more expensive they would run.

I myself race grip and have a set of drift tires that I occasionally run when I feel like drifting.

Its not a cheap hobby, but its tonnes of fun!! I am addicted and my s14 has not gotten any love(or $$$) recently.

I race monthly.

I have a cyclone S that has an exotek chassis that I run in 17.5 spec.

I have a cyclone TC that i am buildling up as a drift car

and I have an Associated sc10 that i run mod class in.

yes very expensive but at the same time very fun

I have a car that I run 1-2 times a month.
Used to drift a Hot Bodies Cyclone S.

Retired that and currently race and drift my Tamiya TA-05 v.2.

i noticed drift cars are mostly electric.. i wanna see some gas powered drift cars.. I have a traxxas jato 3.3 its very fast but not capable of drifting because its rwd and has too much power for only 2 wheels... needs some power to the front wheels and it would be a much more enjoyable car.

sc10 is a sick ass car.. I used to run with a slash but slashes are garbage for serious racing. SC10s kinda suck out of the box but once they get dialed in they are amazing SCs. I highly recommend one, you might as well get the FT one since that recently came out. Stay away from blitz's. They are virtual ripoffs of SC10s but have a shitty drivetrain layout that will lead to premature wear

Yup I run the cirtix system too...its fast as fuck considering its unboosted/fixed timing. You should join SOCAL-RC.COM (http://www.socal-rc.com) we run races monthly

Yeah, another TA05 v.2 with a few more mods than my own. Belongs to my buddy, an editor over at XRC magazine. We race together at SpeedTech RC every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. You should come out. It is very grass roots and lax. Great atmosphere. It's where I started racing.

My dad has so many of these things. He probably has like 12 of them. Multiple for every other kind of racing. He has like 3 for oval racing, 3 for rock crawling, 3 for touring car racing, and other ones I'm forgetting.

I had one a couple years ago but I never really got that into it.

I do it from time to time but since the hobby's slowed down I've gotten lazy to attend any of the get togethers the folks from a local RC drift site create. Before I crashed them into every corner. Sorry about the second picture. If anyone can help make it smaller so that it doesnt take too much space, i'd appreciate it.

Less rear droop. less weight transfer from rear to front.
Under braking or just off throttle? are you running front one-way? that can be it too.

take my advice with a grain of salt though... your car is faster than mine on the track.

it might look slow and lame, but is fun and no track free. we stop racing at the local indoor track and do this twice a month....

Custom Velcro mounts and the abc stealth mount kit are great options!

Problem with attaching Custom Velcro mounts and even the abc stealth mount kit though, are the bond between the mount and the paint/body. something has to give, like the paint comming loose from the body...

wow. These toy cars are pretty cool. how fast do they go stock and built up?

20mph bone stock, easily get to 25-35 for under 100(motor/esc), any faster than that, its very difficult to control and very easy to break, either by crashes or by brute power of the motor. Can get to 50-60mph quite easily if parts don't break.

Ive recently got back in this hobby. Current building an tamiya f103gt for a time attack setup. Not a very easy chassis to run but its gonna be fun hopefully.
f103 is very light, compared to a 4wd sedan, but the traction issues pushed me away from buying one. I read that most run softer/wider tires in the rear and narrow/regular compounds in the front. What body are you running? that is the main reason why I would get one.

yeah, my buddy runs in the FWD 1/10 class in TCS, and they look very quick and grip like touring cars.

i just couldnt hang any more with the 17.5 sportman class, *snipped*

run 17.5 spec(no boost/timing esc), something like the cirtix stock club race system which is about 80-90 and includes esc and motor. I run cirtix with 17.5 motor and 21.5 motor. With the 21.5 I can keep up beat 17.5 guys if they crash or take bad lines. There are pretty much 2 classes, ones with open esc and others with spec/no timing esc class.

i need to get one of these so bad, i dont know any other company tho besides team losi that makes them and there is anoter i cant think of. whats a good place online to look at differnet cars.

Depends on what parts/car your local hobby store stocks or races. I would go to the local store and see what they run. My store stocks tamiya parts so I went with tamiya.

ZenkiKid

Hi all, I'm a newb but would love some advice. I'm looking at buying a rc drift car as an Xmas gift for my BF but have no idea what to look for or whats decent. Any advice on what to look for and/or what questions to ask the local hobby shop? Hopefully I can come across a RX-7 or R32.4 body to match one of his cars.. but 'spose can't be too picky! fyi I'm from NZ, not sure if we'd have the same caliber or variety that you guys have in the US etc :) thank you!

look up tamiya or hpi racing. tamiya ta05 vdf or any hpi drift car, any car can drift ok with just drift tires. Bodies, they have both rx7 and r32, dont expect it to be cheap xmas gift though... run around 300-500+ US dollars for a full/decent setup. Welcome to Speedtech R/C - Your R/C Company (http://www.speedtechrc.com) is good place to go.

to lock or not to lock the front wheels for drift...

spool/aka welded diff in the rear, lsd/aka regular diff in the front for counter steer setup.

all those bodies are available. there are levin's, 86 coupes, s13's ,s14's, rx7's. s14/s13 can be expensive/rare though.

I don't recommend nitro for beginner. Too messy, and can be hard to start/tune etc. Yokomo no longer distributes in the US, only place that imports them is DRIFTSPEED.COM DG-5 / DG5 suspension Exclusive US Distributor (http://www.driftspeed.com) gonna suck when you break parts and have only one place to get parts from. Or wait overseas.

Is it a gear diff or ball diff? Pretty much all diff's in rc are lsd gear type or ball type. I don't think anyone makes open diffs anymore. You can use thick grease to lock the gear diff up, depends on setup too. Ball diff you can use grease or just tighten it. Depends on tire setup too.

The best mod for an RC car is track time. We had a guy consistently finish in the top 10 in our second season with a mildly modified HPI E10. Competitions definitely increase the skill of a driver more than any drift session can ever do. Parts wise however, a spool in the rear will definitely help.
And yes, the VDF is a CF/ aluminum chassis. It is Tamiya's high end drift chassis built around the goal of attaining zero ackerman.

haha nice. i just thot it was woven granite.
by spool u mean like a 2 way diff? or locked?

and i got some hpi drift slick tires, not knowing theyd mix bad with regular treaded drift tires....are the slicks only for nitro drifting or just high speed drifting and will work with electrics too?

04-18-2011, 01:02 PM
If you want to lock it up without the use of a spool or a rigid axle, take out the balls if your diff is a ball diff and glue the diff together to lock it together, kinda like welding up a diff.

I have 2, a really bottom-of-the-line accessorized tamiya ta05-ifs with AM receivers and a 70$ esc that i made years back b/c I just wanted to get to know the process of building/setting one up.
my 2nd one is a TA05 ver.2 with Novak 10.5T brushless motor and esc, futaba servo, and airtronics 2.4ghz transmitter/receiver. I still use the stock tamiya tires for grip, but also switch out to another set of wheels w/ abs pipes on them for drift, but my diffs are both open and stock so it's a bit weird to keep it sideways predictably.

Welcome to Speedtech R/C - Your R/C Company (http://www.speedtechrc.com) they can order most parts and get it shipped quickly.
You can adjust diffs so it acts similar to a spool. If its ball type, tighten it down. If its gear type, put thick grease in it. To "make" one, use epoxy or any permanent type glue, but be careful no to get it on the pulley or more parts than needed, just in case you may need to rebuild/swap out parts.

That was back when brushless just started coming around along with lipo batteries. I'm getting back into it and kinda confused by all the new electronics... Brushed is only used in spec classes where only Mabuchi motor can be used. ni-cd is long long gone. Hell, NiMH batteries are becoming uncommon as well.

for the rcdc comps, is signing up required? or can we just go on the day of with $20? I'll probably be going since it's the week after finals and I'll finally have a bit more free time.

Signing up is required, as it gives us an idea of how many people are showing up, and allows us to set up qualifying groups and our score sheets beforehand, instead of having to modify everything last minute. Makes everything flow so much better and makes for a well prepared event.

Damn at the Tamiya track?! I heard that you were only allowed to run on that track if you had a Tamiya

^yes, but RC DriftClub - The Premiere RC Drifting Organization since 2006 (http://www.rcdriftclub.com) made it happen!! ^^speedpassion cirtix stock club race esc is common, but not so great(i have had two escs and 3motors go out on me), but at 80-90 it includes esc and motor. Novak, Tekin, Lrp all make good escs with good support.

Like real cars there is a few types, drifting, racing and practice. IMO racing is not so noob friendly unless you join a begginer/rookie class. Drifting is imo noob friendly, lots of fun and not as serious(from what I have seen). Maybe arcticdragon192 can give some insight on drifting since he attends those events often.

Hell yeah we did. No need to have a Tamiya chassis for this event.

Very noob friendly, and if you need practice, there is CalRaceway in Orange that holds weekly Wednesday night drift sessions. So you can test and tune and improve your driving there.
Also at competitions, everyone is always helping each other. Just this last round, we had 5 new faces show up and compete. There is a good amount of practice time before qualifying so you have time to get used to the track and get feedback from other drivers as well.

Drifting is very beginner friendly due to the fact that the atmosphere is very fun, lively, and friendly. There's not cut-throat atmosphere here and we all help each other out, either with driving tips, set up tips, lending a hand in fixing a car, lending parts, etc. Everyone is just out to have a good time.

awesome, I've been planning on going to one of the drift jam sessions for the last several weeks, just haven't had the time to actually go b/c of school. I finally ordered a spool, 1-way diff, and an actual body for my ta05v2 along w/ wheels and tires to go w/ the new body, so I should be good to go by the time I graduate/have more time next month.

Cirtix shit sucks. When I used to run onroad I had my esc thermal on me twice even though i had proper gearing and all. Id rather buy something used than buy new Speedpassion Cirtix stuff IMO.

For those looking for a real dope setup for the price if you have a buddy whos active in the any of the branches of service, Tekin does an insane discount for those who are active. Tekin Rs system with motor for $160!!!!

I sold all of my cyclones to focus on offroad because San Diego is heavy with the offroad scene with SDRC just recently opening and all of the backyard tracks that are within the county.

I do miss having a drift car but in San Diego it isnt all that practical to have one when hardly anyone in San Diego even RC drifts anymore. I was an awesome drifter with a shitty setup when I was younger, I wish my skills in rc drifting translated into the racing scene because boy its tough to keep up.

Thanks!! I've only bought a couple things from them including this body. So I don't know what you consider rare but they do have some good stuff on their site.

I've been into RC drift since 2005. In my 11th grade English class I would watch the OG drift videos from SG Drifters in Singapore. I was a regular on RCDori.com. Then I got into 1/18th offroad in 12th grade and in my shop class I programmed a CNC milling and cut arms and shock towers.

Then I got back into rc drifting in 2007 when I got my 240sx. And turned my tc3 into a drift car. Then I got the diggity designs carbon chassis conversion for it. Then I found the chance circuit/nakamura illegal mill videos and got into really modding the bodies with custom styrene pieces. We'll see what I come up with for this body.

Haven't drifted in super long, due to working too much. Might get back into it, not too sure yet. This is the first body, I ever did. Took 3 cans of paint. I'll try to get clearer pictures, but it's a really nice color. It's a Tamiya pearl white, backed with the Tamiya flake, then backed with Tamiya super white. Not exactly in that order, because I don't remember. :tweak:

main hoop
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh202/tek18b_jimmy/Toyota%20Chaser%20Body/2011-08-17114831.jpg

held in with tape, ready to cement/tack it together
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh202/tek18b_jimmy/Toyota%20Chaser%20Body/2011-08-17151928.jpg

cemented the rest on and used plastic epoxy on the gaping spaces, to make it look smooth.

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh202/tek18b_jimmy/Toyota%20Chaser%20Body/2011-08-18115130.jpg

i had to move some of the stickers around to show off the back half of the cage, i then used 800 grit sand paper to smooth/roughed it up for the paint to stick, then sprayed it with 2-3 coats of flat white as a backing cxolor, then 2-3 coats flourescent orange, and finally 3-4 coats of clear. sorry i forgot to snap pics of this process, but you get the point...

@ILLES13 hawk eye is awesome, need to angle the edge of the tyres though, it can catch on cracks and will throw the car off track. and it looks cool too!

^do you go a lot? I was planning on going until I read that it'd be raining all day yesterday. Just converted to countersteer so I wanted to test it out at the track. I went a couple sundays ago when they had a free drift session but I kept breaking stuff (esc/motor solders, front axles) so I couldn't get much slidey time.

go there and sign up!

the Tamiya TA05 and a eagle racing conversion is a great chassis plus upgrade. especially if you want to get upgrade parts for it. CRAZY amount of parts available for it.

here is the chassis i built from scratch

do some research on hyperdrift and other japanese rc drift blogs or try driftmission for some good reviews on different chassis.

im in it about 375-400$ from SCRATCH without the doner car.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy a Yokomo chassis. GREAT chassis but a pain in the ARSE to find parts readily available for. MOST hobby shops I've been to don't carry chassis parts so you have to either get them from Yokomo themselves (as YokomoUSA is no defunct) or genkidoridori.com. Speaking of which, genkidoridori is a great place to hit for parts for any popular chasis (tamiya is waht I'd recommend btw). Try DRCCENTRAL.COM and RCDRIFTCLUB.COM for some popular places on this side of the pond. All the other sites I used to have in my favorites have fallen by the wayside as rcdrifting isn't nearly as popular as it was 3-4 years ago. I don't know if there's a hobbytownusa anywhere near you, but they used to hold open houses where you could just get together and learn, drive, drift, whatever. Those always brought folks together on the east coast. I would check local hobby shops in your area for a knowledge base. While they may not be able to set you up for driftspec, the more you learn about chassis balance in general, the better off you'll be.

my hayday so to speak. lol

Well I need something Complete if I can...since i don't know how to Peice it together correctly.
is something like this ok to get and will work with my Yokomo 1/10 Bodies?:
Tamiya TT-01EeBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices (http://www.ebay.com/itm/290627909783?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649)

that way I only need a Remote, battery and Charger stuff to run it.
BUT....Is it Upgradable and can you adjust Suspension settings Items and Height etc with something Like that^^^??

Super_OK_S13
12-11-2011, 12:36 PM
yea the tamiya tt01 is a GREAT starting chassis you might need to get adjustable turnbuckles if it doesn't come with it, to adjust camber/toe. and for better handling get some nicer shocks.

body height is different than ride height. and ride height is not supposed to be set with the droop screws but rather set with the preload adjustment on each shock body. this is according to the HUDY book that came with my setup station.

the link you posted for the car is a kit which you build it yourself. look for RTR (ready to run) in the titles. which will mostlikely come with a radio, motor, esc, servo for steering, reciever for radio. but no batteries or charger.

check hobbyking.com for some cheap lipos. 5000mah in 7.4v 30-50c discharge rating.

I would not pay that much for a tt-01.

If you want to buy a prebuilt car, you should buy a Team Associated TC4 RTR or something. It is based off of their race chassis, so it is fully adjustable out the box.

If you want to have an intenna inside the body you will either need a 2.4ghz radio, or at least an FM radio and cut the antenna tube short enough as to where it doesn't need to protrude out the body, and then wrap the antenna wire down through and down the antenna tube.

Super_OK_S13
12-12-2011, 06:34 AM
!zar!, i would not pay that much either.

your thoughts have logic behind them as a high end machine!! but, they are more of a touring car and setup for more grip and less steering angle. whereas a drift spec car will be setup for more angle steering and less grip.

check these chassis out they are the clones that accept the original companies parts.

I ran a hobby store for 6+ years, most of it was before the whole drift thing took off, so I guess I am bias towards race equipment.
But I will say that down the road it is going to be hard to purchase parts for the kit posted above locally / down the road.

You can just tuck it if need be. I never ran into any issue doing that. All I did was adjust the wiring tube so it lays flat on the body like so.

It's harder to get the Tamiya stuff in stock, that's probably why you are having a hard time finding it. Knowing which parts your local hobby shop has available should make a big factory in which platform you initially start with.

I'd suggest trying to gather up some frieds and see if they will allow you to setup a small makeshift track in the parking lot. If customers start asking them about it, then chances are they will start supporting the drifter crowd. Maybe they can start off ordering the drift tires first, and then go from there.

Though I will admit in my time most of the R/C drifters where cheap and didn't always support the hobby shop in terms of purchases, unless they had to.

yea, you're right about the drifters being cheap!!! the only thing i can think that the drift crowd would bring the hobby shop money would be the bodies, wheels, body accesories, and track accesories.

Nitro sucks for drifting because it is hard on the clutch, and the nitro engines aren't mean't to be revved high for long periods of time. Not to mention if the car isn't moving much it will start to heat up.

Ehh i dont think the clutch would wear that fast... just have to get a 3 puck aluminum clutch and your good to go.

Since drifting is generally about fun and ease of entry, you probably won't find a LOT of Nitro drift. It can be done, but much like FWD drifting on a 1:1 scale, why choose the most difficult way to do something? Another turn off to nitro (in the Northeast anyway) is during the winter, you have nowhere to run your car. All the tracks are inside and the ones that are outside are covered in snow or not really maintained. Sure, you can hit up a parking structure or cleared lot, but a)it's cold and b) drifting in big circles with no defined boundaries gets boring after a while.

But, if you actually like the tuning and the sound and all that, then do it up. I have a few friends with Nitros that would come out in the summmer from time to time. They had fun with it. My buddy, Matt, blew the buhjeebus up out of his car once we got to a track, but he was doing well up until that happened. Kinda cool to see all that smoke. lol. No other Nitro had any issues that I can remember tho.

Used to drift competition about two years ago, it died down here in Florida so I picked up offroad racing. Picked up a few sponsors along the way, and now it takes up pretty much all my free time haha.

I'm about to pick up a sprint 2 drift. What extra batteries/chargers would you guys recommend. Is it better to buy a few rather than 1 reallly good one?

Dont waste money on a NIMH battery. Go to hobbyking.com and pickup a few Turnigy 2s 5000mah 30-40C Lipos and a charger off hobbyking. If your on a budget.

Not on a huge budget and dont mind buying the best ones, just trying to figure out whats better from people with experience. I was recommended a dynamite silver 5000mah 7.4v by my buddy but ill check those out too

Alright then, I can definetly point you in the right direction then... The dynamite packs are not that great.

If you want a decent pack for a decent price, go with a Venom 50C battery pack. 2s 5000mah. Ive ran them, and have always worked well.
TowerHobbies.com | 15086 Venom LiPo 2S 2P 7.4V 5000mAh 50C Hard Case Universal (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXZDW3&P=7)

If you want the best of the best, look into a trinity revtech 65c pack, or a Orion carbon pro cell battery..
6500mAh, 7.4v, 2s, 65c, Deans (http://www.trinityrc.net/shop/index.php?route=product/product&path=71_77&product_id=284)

Team Orion 2S "Carbon Pro" 90C Li-Poly Battery Pack w/Tubes (7.4V/5000mAh) [ORI14043] | Batteries - A Main Hobbies (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1389_1393_1856/products_id/203420/n/Team-Orion-2S-Carbon-Pro-90C-Li-Poly-Battery-Pack-w-Tubes-74V-5000mAh)

As for chargers, check into the venom pro charger:
TowerHobbies.com | 0657 Venom AC/DC Pro Charger/Balancer (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXUAB8&P=7)

They work great

As a general rule, dont cheap out on lipos, ive seen quiet a few dynamites burst into flames. The turnigy or gensace lipos are the only cheap packs I would recommend.

Shop for RC Hobby Parts and Upgrades - Digital Servos, Brushless Motors, ESC, LiPo Batteries/Chargers for RC Helicopters, RC Planes, RC Cars, Robots (http://www.hobbypartz.com) is where I get my lipos.

Heard great reviews on gen-ace, but they were out of stock out of time and I settled for sky lipos which I've had no problems with them at all. Also if you are looking for a charger the thunder AC6 will do you well. I was able to pick up a charger and 2 lipos for a little more then $100.

Anyways I ended up selling my blitz and picking up a losi xxx sct.

Try finding some ABS plastic tubing at Home Depot or Lowes the same diameter as your rims (without tires). PVC might work, but on the 1/10 cars PVC was always too slick. ABS is good stuff though.

no one paying attention to your posts? everyones on the rc drift bandwagon

Racing is alot more fun though. I sold my tamiya rc cars a few months ago (f103 and ta02).. maybe get back into rc later, I really like the short course trucks, id probably just get a RTR kit.

But really interested in picking up r/c planes now. They got some nice foam warbirds AirField RC RTF (http://www.nitroplanes.com/aircwa.html)

I know id have to start with at trainer first.

im not jumping on any drift bandwagon. ive been doing it for years. i used to be into stadium trucks but slowly moved onto drifting.

i've been RC drifting since 2005... Like the OG's, SG Drifters... rc drift still isn't, and probably wont be as big as the short course or crawlers for another year or 2. Mainly because its (like HyperTek said) not racing.

IMO, the majority of people that get into the "Hobby" are looking for a BASHER type car/truck or RTR. Most hobby shops aren't willing to dish out the extra cash to be able to carry drift chassis/parts/cool bodies/wheels/tyres/ect.. i dont think theres a bandwagon since its still not that popular.

Decided I wanted to get back into RC drifting now that there are people near me that actually do it as well. I picked up a cheap TT-01D and just finished the body tonight. It was horribly done, but I don't care, it's just a beater for now.

So far I've just done a ESC and metal servo and locked the rear diff. Might do the front and see how it handles.

Super_OK_S13

front one-way, NOT locked. it'll have too much understeer. and no turn-in... you'll really have to over work the car, and weight transfer it to get it to initiate the drift.

got some new pics from "inside the garage".

Just finished up my HPI Ae86 body. Painted it with Pactra Metallic Burgundy, and coated that with a silver backing. Then just used a carbon sheet to make the hood. I think it turned out pretty good for being my first body. Excuse the shitty cell phone pics.
