I did the procedure here: http://zilvia.net/f/archive-faqs/291877-diy-z31-2003-altima-rear-rotor-upgrade-s14-calipers-new-post.html But my pads overhang a bit (light part you see in between the pads is pad material):

Just wondering if anyone else with an s13 had the same problem or not.

What sucks it that I didn't think there was a way to mess this up :(
Z31 brackets + Altima rotors = WIN!?
Fuck, I just noticed that on mine too. Brake pads have a lip on em now but they're working fine
Odd, this is the 2nd s13 I've seen this happen on.
I did it on my car and I had zero overhang.
Maybe try taking brackets off another Z31?

What pads are you both using?

lol eh, car is never tracked, never drifted, and isn't my DD. Duralast Golds are good enough.
When I start doing events/motorsports, I'll upgrade.

Well the z31 has two different rear rotors, one is vented and the other is not.. I'm not sure if their is a difference...

A bit of pad overhang is certainly not going to be much cause for concern for these, as there have been quite a few cars we see through inspection here at our shop that have this issue...I think much of it is due to pad differentiation.
I've done the swap now with Carquest and Carbotech pads and did not have the overhang issue, however that's not to say that other rbands are made the same.
I'll look into if there are any differences between bracket types and look at if there are any difference in rotor overall size for the Altima (which I did look at before, but the site may have not been right, I'll order all of them in at carquest to see if there is ad ifference.

Maybe there is a small difference in the z31 brackets over the years?

what is the overhang??
u do know that 1985 z31 brackets are different than 10/87 z31 brackets right the rotor is a lot smaller

You can see some of the pad above the rotor not a little of the rotor sticking out.
These brackets were from a 84 4lug. The FA guide says 85-86. Parts interchanges say the brackets from 84-86 have the same part number and the 87-89 have another. They visually look the same.

Having the same problem picked my brackets off of a 86 z31 with a solid rotor.. axxis ultimate pads if that makes a difference/

sorry to bump, but just want some clarification before i start getting the parts...so the variables are:
s13/s14 and 84-86/87-89 z31
any of you guys having this "overhang" problem running this on an s14? is anyone able to confirm not having "overhang" and their variation combination? e.g. s13/87-89=no overhang...

I have an S14. The S13 and S14 rear brackets are the same.

yeah, i thought so too...someone elses response about this problem and s13s confused me...
so has anyone done this upgrade and NOT have the "overhang" problem?

after recently helping another friend with this setup, I can say that I'm unsure how mine work aside from Carbotech maybe not putting pad material on the pads I have correctly.
This past weekend I talked to some guys on track with OEM+ setups, and the ones with overhang essentially said to 'deal with it' and that they didn't have any other issues aside from some noise.
With that said, I'm going to do more research into other rotors that may help solve this issue, but something tells me there isn't going to be much that will bolt in so closely without washers.

If they are Altima rotors maybe the year of the Altima matters AND if it's an alit
A with ABS?

The Third gen rotors are all the same.

so there were ones without overhang there? or are you saying in general?

My comment was in general. I looked at a guys Mustang rear brake swap and he had a solid 1/8" of overhang. Said the gained area was worth the slight overhang. Damn is all I said.
Remember, overhang isn't bad if the gained area is better. A 1/16 of an inch by what, 3 inches is only marginal in terms of area lost when going from a puny stock rotor to the Altima one.

I was really digging this whole rear brake upgrade and was considering doing it soon, but now I'm having seconds thoughts because I'm so not down with this brake overhang issue.. I want a clean install and none of this overhang crap..
CodyAce & Others:
How did you get your setup to work without the overhang?
What year Z31 did you pick that rear caliper bracket off and have you validated the differences between the years?
Is there seriously a difference between the brake pads you used and others?
Can you or have you tried different rear brake pads and noticed this 'overhang' issue?
Lets figure this out so we can make it awesome! :bigok:

I've not been able to really confirm anything, as Z31 are almost impossible to find around here anymore as the Cash for Clunker cars have all made it to the EZ pull yards now. I am going to attempt to find a rotor that may work, but the other side of me says that it's not worth my time nor aggravation to source one that will fit, as then you'd be using washers to space stuff (which isn't bad, but I'd prefer to not stack a bunch of washers to make it work(
The overhang does not make it any less clean, and it doesn't make it work any differently: It also does not effect any performance. We're talking about 1/32 of an inch, maybe at most of an overhang across the tippy top of the pad, covered by the caliper-- You'll never notice it.

I did the upgrade today on my s14 and I have noticed the overhang on the pads on the left side but on the right side the pads fit perfectly but the rotor is not centered in the bracket. Has anyone else experienced this?

I just ground a slight amount of the material off the bottom of the ears on the pads and voila, no more overhang. Of course my brakes drag now so I probably messed it up by doing that some how lol
