I work in Acquisitions for a real estate private equity firm.

We're the Operating Partner in most of our joint ventures, so I source the deal, underwrite/analyze it, present it to our internal investment committee, and then we go and shop for a "Money Partner" to put up the majority of the equity, etc.

Looking for a new job right now, trying to go over to the money partner side. I'll be done with my MBA in May, so I'm trying to get in as a Sr. Associate or VP.

It's not really a fun job, but it pays the bills. Could be a lot worse, and the DC real estate market barely got scratched compared to the rest of the country due to federal demand.

what does a nuclear engineer do?

anything that deals with nuclear power systems or naval nuclear propulsion systems. It can be developing, maintaining/supporting/overhauling, or refueling/defueling either primary (nuclear reactor) or secondary (steam turbine) systems. I work with naval nuclear propulsion systems. If you keep up with US defense stuff, USS Roosevelt is currently in its 25 year overhaul phase. That includes the refueling of its cores.

I suspect you are in HS or early college? If your wondering how one gets into this field: Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or plain old Nuclear Engineering will get you in this type of stuff.

The actual fission process, and neutron life cycle stuff may be physics/nuclear, but everything else is pure mechanical engineering. All it is, is just a steam plant with the nuclear fission being the heat source.

In the real word, what your actual degree is in dosnt matter too much, unless your working for a smaller company. I knew very little about nuclear and Naval field when I graduated. I was just simply offered the job and took it. Infact, i thought ships were kind of stupid at that time and werent as cool as cars or aircrafts lol. I've learned to appreciate them now.. Judging by your majors there is no money in anything you are going to do. What kinds of positions would you consider a good starting position? Not trying to sound like an asshat but the combination sounds like maybe a whale trainer or something of the sort. I didn't think those people made a whole lot of money, more like they're in it for the love, not the money MJ. Marine Science/Marine Biology is one of the most competitive fields so I hope you are doing well academically, and even then its tough to make money in that field.

Let me guess... you know John, since you're from Eagle Rock too lol. They pay isn't great, but it's a start. I don't plan on working there long, just to gain some experience. The registry I'm with pays $34, so I'm good with that.

If John's the one you know, he let his manager know about me and I got interviewed. I gotta wait until Thursday to find out.

Sales Engineer

I'm pretty sure I can make the EBE thing work for myself. Haven't really planned out what I want to do, but I've never really felt like my job HAS to be super closely related to what I study. Doing the marine science minor because it interests me, I feel like the extra challenge will help me out, and the program has some cool classes with interesting opportunities. It also gives me a lot of opportunity to build relationships with people I might need to know if I do my grad work here at Scripps.

Making a lot of money isn't really my goal in life. People live and smile with a lot less than I have right now, and I doubt I'll be optionless in two years.

For where things stand right now, if putting on a wetsuit and working with whales 40+ hours a week was what I had to do, I wouldn't consider that a failure.

that's the magic of engineering degrees. b/s is sufficient. and PHDs are pointless. :P

but yea... unless i find a company that will pay for a masters in lets say...business, then i'll probably just stay put. working for the gov't a masters grad makes money on a scale of "9" when u have a b/s u start at like a "5" or "7". to get to a 9 from 7 takes 1 year. so far i have never had someone tell me that i wasn't qualified enough. that's just my story though.

Not a bad deal either, I know several ER PAs and a surgical PA who really enjoy their jobs. I'd talk to as many people as you can in different hospital settings, specialties, regions, etc.- medicine is full of opinionated people and the "culture" of a specific place can really sway you when it may not be representative of the field as a whole.

i've seen many peoples cars and builds and all and it got me to thinking, where do you get the funds to build such amazing cars. i mean i know they aren't built over nite and all but, now that i just bought my first home, i can't imagine being able to afford some of the builds many of you do. before i bought my home i had money to have more fun with and all but, now if i really want a part i've gotta save a while and if something unexpected comes up i end up using the funds for that.

i guess i'll start. i'm 26 and live in biloxi, ms. i'm a casino dealer and my check depends largely on the tips. my hourly salary is only $4.68/hour. SERIOUSLY. the tips, or tokes as we call them, are usually between $16-$20/hour. so basically i make between $20-$24/hr and i usually work approx 60 hours every 2 weeks, as i'm part time. after taxes and 401k i bring home alittle more then enough for bills and IRA.

that's my situation. you don't have to go into depth as much as i did but, i would like to know more about what your job is or what you do for extra money.

Daniel.

I live in Florence, AL and i am 24years old. I am currently Store manager/ Lead Repair technician for a Company called Cellaris. We repair cell phones, ipads, ipods and pretty much anything else i can get parts for like gaming equipment. We also stock thousands of dollars in accessories for anything in the cellular feild. I run a team of technicians and sales people. I am on salary of 25k annually plus commission on sales and repairs and also monthly bonus if my store hits my targeted goal and that pans out around 30-35k a year working around 40hrs a week, sometimes more on occasion. I love what i do and its enuff to let me do the things i desire. I plan to advance to DM in the future over a market in the west coast region or TX, I want to get closer to better drifting venues.

i like this thread, its gonna show alot about zilvia.
im 20yrs old, i'm co-owner of a corporation here in riverside county, i work in my company as a carpet cleaner, pest control, and general handy man, i make about 1k a check on a good day, and in tips depending on my attitude and need of money can make about 300 dollars extra a pay, this being apart from what the company actually makes all in all.

I am a jet engine Quality control inspector for the Royal Saudi Airforce.
Prior wrote technical repair manuals for Boeing for the new C-130J model spec ops variants
Prior did inspection/repair at hurlburt field with lockheed martin
prior, i ran a Depot maintenance shop for C-130 engine repair/overhaul
and prior to that i was a c-130 mechanic in the USAF SSgt and pretty much full time (in my offtime) wheel and parts slinger which paid for everything i did car wise

I make around 90-100k depending on if i do overtime. work maybe 5 hours a week of actual work. Live on a compound, they give a 2011 Camry, pools and shit here. Get to wear whatever i want with a company shirt basically, and get to go wherever i want with free reign to look at anything thanks to my job. I make sure people are doing shit safe and correctly with regards to aircraft repair.

United States Marine and my job is Aviation Operation Specialist. No crazy pay here but I know civilian sector job doing the same starts at 60-70k a year I believe.

if you get lucky maybe. all the places i was doing work, its a 35-45 if you are lucky job unless you go commercial with an A&P. but its not much more.
jobs went way down in pay in the past few years. so many people looking, so few slots

20 yr old full time stupid and pizza delivery driver. 16-20hrs a week. 8$/hr with probably 10-16$/hr in tips. so effectively about 18-26$/hr

yup. i deliver pizza in my s14. its a win/lose situation. win part is that i get to drive my car all the time and learn everything about it

lose part is that i HAVE to drive my car all the time, and puts on a shit ton of city miles.
regardless, it pays the bills and funds my car. i just save up for legit shit instead of spending quick money on garbage parts. should be getting my work wheels in a couple weeks. had to be made and shipped from japan.

It's really interesting to see what all of you Zilvians do. Some of you have really official sounding jobs lol.

I am an armed social worker, aka police officer, for a local large city. 46k a year. Not too bad considering the cost of living isnt horrible here. As long I budget my money well I usually have some good spending money.

I'm 21, currently living in Meridian, MS (do not want), and I'm TSC rep (Tech service center) for Directv (13.50 an hour + mad overtime) and also a IT guy for the main southern depts (travel expense paid, on call 25 an hour regardless of what I do). At one point, I was an installer until I broketed my elbow, so now I save all my stress for my builds.

As far as builds go, I've had some nice ones (ka-t, sr20itb, sr20det, rb20det, rb25det/ s13/s14), but nothing to get a good cry-fap in with. So I'm selling what I have to build something diff (for the area anyhow), a ls1 s13 vert! Now I just have to find some days off damnitt!

I'm also part-time on the weekends at Best Buy working in the mobile phone department. I've been with Best Buy about nine years. Still do it cause I enjoy the people/money (even though is very little $) and it's honestly fun work. Maybe one day I'll quit being crazy and work one grind.

Dispatcher/customer service rep for a roadside assistance company. Pays crap, customers are crap, hours are crap. Pays the bills while I goof off with cars and figure out what to do with life though. I did talk to someone from Zilvia once I think though, had a white S13 in Long Beach CA, told me his car shut off on the fwy. Asked him if it was lowered, he said yes, asked him if he rubbed through his fender harness, sure enough.... He was pissed when I told him it was going to be an hour though and hung up on me.

40 years old (an older S13 enthusiast), married father of 2.

Director of Planning & Analysis for LOUD Technologies Inc, one the world's leading manufacturers of audio and musical equipment. Our brands include Mackie, Ampeg, Crate, EAW and Martin Audio. I have a bachelors degree in Chemistry from the University of Washington and a degree is criminal justice as well. I combine my years of experience as a sound engineer mixing for concerts with business management experience. I still mix shows on a regular basis to feed my 240sx modifying habit.

We have the best selling active loudspeakers and mixers in the world. I have been building my S13 for about a year and a half, and it was already a purpose built autocross car when I bought it...
