View Full Version : JWT-tuned ECU vs. Apex'i S-AFC

I'm trying to decide which i should do for my car, looking for advantages/disadvantages of each. I know the s-afc is adjustable for future mods, but won't get rid of the speed limiter like the tuned ecu, plus the install (how hard is it and what do i need aside from the main unit?) any thoughts guys?
:stupid:

I know JWT ecu's run rich which isn't good. Its not a huge deal but its something to think about. Reduced gas mileage, slightly affects hp and is harder on your rings over time than a leaner a/f ratio.

an S-AFC can be tuned on a dyno with a wideband O2 by just about any competent performance shop.
SAFC doesn't adjust timing. It also has a poor resolution (8-12 points of adjustment on your fuel map).
It's fairly simple to install though and it's a cheaper way to make things run. If you have enough money for both, your best bet is JWT ECU with SAFC to reduce richness in their program.

does JWT ecu has the timing retarded already?
are you going KA-T? if so, we're on the same boat
but yea like Halo said, s-afc cant adjust the timing
but you can get s-afc 2 (doesnt have timing adjustment but it has knock sensors)
but you can get MSD ignition to retard the timing (eventhough i dont know which model)

are you putting it on a turbo car, or NA?

Currently NA, with no intention of going turbo BUT if i change my mind someday (i.e. win the lottery) i'd like the ability to adjust an safc instead of plonking down another ~$500 for a tuned ecu again. also, anyone know how hard the install is or what i'd need to do it?

installs ain't hard... most likely splice and solder some wires going to the ECU (well... I dont have one on my car, but I have helped people doing it). It's a piggy back system so the SAFC tricks the ECU with values +/- from the sensors (i.e. O2)
JWT ECU/ROM for the NA application does not run that rich, the ROM healthy(ly) leans out the motor and removes the stock rev limiter (also speedometer limiter) -- at least it happens to 240sx FWD bro - Altimas.. I assume with same motor but different drivetrain, it should also be VERY similar...
SAFC+JWT ROM = pretty safe solution
the ultimate solution = stand alone

lots of JWT talk today..
It's only $100 for a retune once you have plunked down the $500+

that is true... but you will have to always wait on JWT for some unknown number of days before the ECU could be reprogrammed...

okay, look at it this way: with my NA car, basic bolt ons, no JWT but just a S-afc, properly tuned, what kind of gains could i look at? (aside from gaining control over my a/f ratios, that should be obvious ;))

well, there's an altima.net member with turned SAFC. He has all bolts on + SAFC, and on dynos it showed that he is gaining for about 10 hp max...
Hope it helps (well, we do share the same motors with 240sx :))

IMHO.. I dont have eather.
But..... I would think it is best to go with all stand alone systems... You can get an MSD to mess with timing and Speed Rev meter to cut the max redline and speed + oil and stuff... an AFC to make it run good. and so on and so on...
At least thats my plan.
I would rather take it to my local shop and have them tune it... then send my ecu in and have jwt do it...
jwt is great and all, and it will cost a bit more my way... But I will have allthe controll!
And also I wont be out a car for a week... Just a day of dyno-tune.

The install on the SAFC is only 10% of the battle. The other 90& is tuning the afc. So if you go with the safc you need to take the car to a dyno and have someone that knows the safc tune it.
SAFC-$320
Rev Speed Meter(to remove speed limiter) $250
1 hour dyno tuning-$100
Total=$670
So you may want to think about going with the JWT ecu
Good Luck,
Ted

I had a chance to look at the basic Microtech MT-8 standalone manual (being installed on a 3rd gen rx-7 running on T66 turbo), and on the settings, you can adjust/set the soft and hard rev limiter through the standalone...

standalone is sure the best choice, but dyno tuning is a bitch as far as I know... there's a Microtech Rep coming into our shop (J&H Racing), and I will sure see what's going on.....
