A few months ago i purchased my 240sx from a buddy of mine. Long story short he never completed the title transfer to his name and when he sold it to me i was given the bill of sale signed by the original owner with the buyer information blank.
went to the dmv last week to obtain a pink slip and register the car in my name but i was told by the officer that there was a lien on the vehicle under what seems to be the sellers husband or borthers name.
my question is this, in the event that i cannot contact the original owners to sign a lien release am i left with a car i can never legally own? Or is there something i can do beyond massive google searches for the names on the title?

Im pretty much the car never belonged to your buddyif he never transferred the title. Im sure you can legally own it. problem is i believe you maybe paying hefty fines to do it. Should take the car back to your buddy and have him or her deal with it before selling it to you. too much trouble for you.

you will need to find a place to do a lein sale on it if you cant find the original owner on the title.
do not do this your self pay a company that deals with lein sales and thats it.
did you buy this car from some dude in Vennice, CA ?

i would get your money back from your buddy until he deals with it, cuz what if he never paid the other guy and the guy still owns it, or if there is drama with the first owner who couldnt sell the car to your buddy.
yeah...

i agree with sr20detman, take it back to your boy and have him take care of that since he didnt finish it in the first place.

The only way is to get in touch with the original owner and have them sign the title transfer.. Get triple A, they are more supportive than dmv, and less waiting. $50 for a year plus 3 tows

i have triple A and use it primarily for roadside assistance. but would the dmv or triple a for that matter release such information to me? im sure that if they gave me an address/phone number they would be breaching some type of privacy policy?

I think triple a has as much authority as dmv does, go there and ask!
