Hey guys, I have been collecting parts for my rb25det swap and I figured I am far enough to start doing the swap. I haven't got the motor yet, it is in the mail and should be where the car is at next week so I figured I would start ripping into mine.

I am going to be using a Rb25det S2 engine with Zerolift mounts and a Steel drive shaft.

I am by no means done with collecting all the parts but I don't really have a set time limit on when the car needs to be done so I just figured I would start early. I have the larger stuff,now just the little shit. I plan to do the wiring harness myself,Depending on how good the Rb's is. I have to do everything outside so winter is going to be fun...:rant:

I am staying 3 hours from the car for school, so any work done to it will have to be on weekends.

good start man all i have to say is take your time and dont rush a rb swap clean the whole motor and replace as many gaskets as you can yourself (and on some IT manifoldfs make sure the ports match up cause some cheap ebay manifolds suck) cant wait to see the progress man

Thanks man,Yeah I plan to port match it. I am debating on if I want to replace the gaskets and void warranty. but if I don't do it,3 months down the road after warranty head gasket goes i'm going to just be pissed for not changing it.

Also would anyone recommend running A/C or should I just delete it?

Right man,I hear ya. I'll see how things work out. I want to run a/c and all I will need is the lines and condenser. I would just run my stock one but it's huge and in the way.

I chose N1 waterm pump and oil pump for mine as it will see some track duty. Really up to you I guess but for few more bucks, why not.

I did some work this weekend. Got a lot done, but when I left friday about 2 hours down the highway I remembered I forgot my damn camera. So I took a couple with my phone and will get them up soon. After inspecting the motor once I cut the plastic off I noticed the ACC valve on the IM was broken and the sensor about it was broken(the wires and plastic that went into the sensor were broken). Then after pulling the clutch fan off I noticed parts of an edge on the Hermonic balancer were broken off, there about 4 chunks gone(not sure if I should replace). Everything else looked pretty good, I drained some coolant out and couldn't decide if it was orange or poop brown haha. So I just ran the hose through it for 40 minutes,pretty damn clean now.

Are the Rb25det S2 engines MAF based or MAP based? If they are MAF, which one will work? mine never came with one. Thanks.

I got the Intake manifold on, it went pretty smooth besides the throttle body was kinda a bitch, It had to be just right to tighten down. Now I get to route the vacuum lines and figure out where they go.

Double checked the shaft play on the turbo and it's good.
I pulled the Oil pan off also to replace the gasket cause it was leaky.
How many Quarts does the rb25 take? I swear about 7 1/2 came out.
Thankfully I didn't find any gold in it haha.

Okay, thanks for the input! I daily mine every day besides in winter, 100+ miles a week if not more and when I take it home it's a stright 3 hour drive.

If using the OEM will do that will help alot, Do you track yours? or if your on it alot does it get hot faster and stay hot?

Okay sweet man. I'll be running a Nismo thermostat,Aem Fuel pressure regulator(also a Circuit sports fuel rail), aluminum rad, and dual 12" fans.

The RB26 N1 water pump is a much better design that flows TONS more water at high engine speed and still flows plenty for daily driving. I had one on my RB25 (after reading a lot of NZ and Aus Skyline forums) and loved it. Ran cooler than my SR.

Obviously you should be running an aluminum radiator and either a clutch fan with shroud or two electric fans.

EDIT- I asked the guy about powdercoating and he said he would but he isn't done with the oven he is making..So I am just spraying them Titanium Silvere blue. I got one done and after the other drys I will bolt them up and post what it turns out like, so far I am really liking the color.

Okay, I was told to buy an Sr20 downpipe, we'll I got it and I slid it onto the Turbo outlet, well it runs right into the tranny..Now was I filled with bullshit and spent money on the downpipe for no reason,or do I just have to buy an sr20 Turbo outlet also? Scratch that, I see that the Sr20 is 5 bolt and the rb25 turbo is 6..So I probably bought this down pipe for no reason..Hopefully I can exchange it for the Mckinny downpipe..Don't really want to shovel out $240 for a downpipe but I guess if I have to I better. What clutch does everyone recommend? I was going to just go with a Stage 1, since I'm only looking for 300HP after i'm done. What does everyone think about the Spec clutches?

Update.
Engine is in. Was probably the most sketchy process I have ever been through. The motor mounts would not line up. So I had to jack the Tranny up while it was in to level it out and then it slid right in!.

I would have more Pictures but it was snowing and so cold my damn camera kept shutting off.
EDIT-also just remembered if you look at the first injector you will noticed the clip is broken..FUCK. The chain broke the plastic off around the pins.. They are still there though, in the second pic if you look closely you can see them stick out,haha. I think I can get it to work but I have a feeling I am going to have some problems down the road with that little shit. So for now it will stay, until I firgure out which way I decide to go with the motor.

It is pretty close to the Radiator, but will be okay.
I checked for hood fitment and it's about an inch,maybe slightly more.

The white strut towers is just Temp. till I pull the engine later and rebuild it. I plan to spray the entire car, inside and out, while rebuilding the engine. For now, just some fun.

I have been deciding on gauges I want. At first I wanted the Blitz BLM series and still do, but from what I have seen they are becoming discontinued? Damn. I picked up the older style Blitz BLM boost gauge, now I want 2 others to complete my vent pod, since using different gauges will bother the shit out of me.

I was looking into Defi gauges, and after pricing out 3 gauges and the link I was at $993+shipping..I can't justify paying 1k for 3 gauges. I was thinking about just picking up some Glow shift gauges, I have some in my truck and love them besides one of them I can only use the color red(I only had it on red anyways). I also looked into Megan gauges from Enjuku, there cheap. But I hate the look of them, with the icon in the gauge.

What other options are out there? I want them in black lens.
They can be 52-60mm, since my vent pod is 52mm, if I get 60mm I will just toss it in the mill and bore the holes an extra .3150.

I am waiting on the MAF sensor in the mail.
I could start it this weekend, but the only thing is it will be running right of the turbo elbow, I might just do it for a min, to see if it will run or if I will need some other shit.

I was going to order the skyo elbow thursday in class but they said they are on Backorder,I am glad they were since I got called at 3:30 on thursday and was layed off.. So now I need to probably put the elbow on hold for now, I am glad I had almost everything done so far.

I will be working on it for about a week each and every day. Hopefully I can move it around without having to push it haha.

Can give a little info on the plugs coming out of the relax box. brown/white and black go to the a/c fan that goes on the condenser. Other brown plug also deals with the a/c. It goes to the silver canister that attaches beside and below the battery tray.

Update!

Well over Christmas break I got it running and drove it around. It ran nice considering I was running it open after the turbo outlet so it was slightly loud. I just got my turbo outlet in the mail from Skyo and my Air filter from FRS should be there this week I hope. Then after that I need to find my old hood prop rod or a new one cause I for some reason cannot find mine. It ran great at .5 bar. I might turn it but a little bit more after I get the exhaust ran and air filter on. Also if anyone was wondering. The stock Turbo outlet on the Rb25 does clear the steering shaft with the Zerolift kit. it's just a couple of mm's but it clears. But I decided to go with the Skyo one, So I can use an Sr20 downpipe. I was getting some Compressor surge but after loosening the BOV spring it seems to work great but I still get some surge at lower boost. but if I loosen the spring any more it leaks out at idle.

It's actually an ISIS Front mount, and it fit great besides I had to cut some of the bumper cover off. I could have kept the bottom center part if I wanted to but since it had a crack I just cut the whole center out and I like it like that.

The IC piping is xo2 and it fit pretty good.

Well last night I got the Turbo outlet and downpipe in. The fitment was great and with wiggling it some to get the outlet on it find snug! I didn't even have the exhaust hanger bolted that is on the downpipe and the exhaust was solid which is sweet.. The exhaust it actually really quiet I think which is a plus since I can't afford an exhaust ticket. Now there is a weird sound from the front left wheel which I have no idea what it is but almost sounds like it's a shot wheel bearing. I will have to tear into it later today.

Seems to be running good. I need to rewire my fans since they don't always turn on. so I will wire it into a switch. Driving in about 30 degrees I seen 248 degrees F without fans on.

Just brought it back to my apartment after the swap and these were the numbers on the drive.

Drove 60MPH for 168miles. used just before a half tank. Which Is actually better mileage then the Ka.
Sat at 90 Degrees cel.
-.4 bar vacuum
3.5bar oil pressure.

These sound like okay numbers?

Well I suppose I could update this. Pulled my turbo and It has about 1/8-1/4 inch shaft play. So I guess I'll be getting a new turbo. The plan is a hypergear since its just a drop in so I don't have to change anything. What's your guys views on heat wrapping the turbo outlet and down pipe? My question is can you over wrap it? Each time wrapping I kept it at about half overlap. On the 02 hole would it be better to cut the wrap or go around the bung?

Update!!
Well I unwrapped the outlet cause I didn't want to risk cracking it, but I left the down pipe wrapped and have no issues from that. Might re-wrap the outlet though. We'll see.

I just purchased a Aem ems series 2 management with boost solenoid and map sensor, 1000cc injector dynamic injectors, Hks fuel rail and a wideband a/f. My plan is to run E85. The highest octane we have around here is 91. Which who knows if it's even 91.. I know one station near me has two 89 tanks and slapped 91 on it.

Got everything in and wired except for the o2 mounted. Plan to remove my test pipe and install the wideband there. What do you guys think, good spot for it? Might be able to do a test fire later tonight once I get the 91 drained and my fuel line figured out.

Thanks man! I cannot wait till it's on the road again. Ive been thinking about bringing it in to a dyno and have it tuned cause there is so much to this AEM. I'm having problems getting it started now. Everything is hooked up it's just troubleshooting now. I did notice while cranking my injector volts are different for all 6 so i'm thinking that might have something to do with not starting.

Update!!
Just got back from the dyno last night. We had some issues with my wideband not reading right, we narrowed it down to the wiring being messed up. So we had to tune without.
The guys at Dbperformance were great people! Big thanks to Shane for tuning it. Steve ripped into my ic piping to get the Ait sensor in and rolled the pipes he took off, fuckin awesome.
Tuned at 270hp, 213tq at 10lbs. I'm happy with the numbers. I know my turbo is what's holding me back now. Not even using 50% duty cycle on my injectors. I'll have dyno charts posted up in a little bit!

My boost was weird. Before I could never push past 7 lbs. now it will reach 10. I must have had a boost leak and never knew. I tied every hose connection down and added a new pcv hose since mine collapsed.
Shane couldn't believe how well my rb sounded and how everything worked well lol. He said everyone he's dealt with had mechanical problems. That brightened up my day.

Right man,I hear ya. I'll see how things work out. I want to run a/c and all I will need is the lines and condenser. I would just run my stock one but it's huge and in the way.

I got a R33 GTST, Condenser is the same as S14KA, so is the receiver dryer and AC pressure switch. Custom lines and some wiring and your good to go.

Well this summer I was driving the car and came up on an approach and didn't have time to stop so I road it out and smashed my oil pan. So this gave me enough insentive to rip the engine out and replace all the seals.

At first I was going to replace the oil pan and seals and just call it good, but now I'm planning on a Hx-35 turbo and going to push 500hp+. I believe my clutch will hold 4-450ftlbs so I'm fine there, I just need a bigger fuel pump or two since I only have 1 255lph.

Took my oil pump out to check everything out and you can see the marks on the inside where the crank is notorious for breaking them but they're not too bad yet. If I have the funds before it goes back in I'm going to get a new pump and extended crank collar.

I'm thinking new stock headgasket for now at 500hp and 1.2-1.5bar. will have arp head studs, arp mains and arp rod bolts.

My buddy Kevin had N1 pump and the Jun crank collar and blew the pump up (also was making I think 500hp?), he talked to RIPS racing they said they have never had a stock pump fail with spool gears. But anyways great build and glad to see zerolift got you a good engine.

Thanks for the heads up. Crank collar should be fitted now, just gotta order connection rod arp bolts to get my rotating assembly back. I'm still in a toss up on the oil pump. Funds are pretty tight right now with the new turbo and manifold and overhaul of the engine so I might run stock pump for now but limit it to 300-400hp.

The stock throttle body will do just fine for now. With full 3inch ic piping and a full 3.25 exhaust to the back I'll be good for 500whp no problem. Now I'm not throwing the idea out cause my plan was a q45 TB later on or fit rb26 itb intake. That's really the least of my worries right now. It's still going to run and drive fine without the TB added.

You must not have read all my stuff haha. Yeah I'm cleaning the wiring harness and I want to have the engine bay painted but we'll see how funds are. I may just clean it up nice and throw some rattle can paint on for now.


Taxes finally arrived so my turbo and manifold should be here hopefully by Friday. Still waiting on machine shop but I have a few months still. My problem is working on the car since it's winter.

You're not the only one man. I'm recently unemployed trying to make ends meet but thankfully unemployment is helping until winter season is over. I'm going to clean the harness myself it's quite easy if you have the patients.

I'm well aware of what's going on but like I said in the above post. I'm not sure on my intake setup yet. If I reuse my old ic piping I don't think it's 3" it's smaller but ill double check that. The stock TB will do just fine for now.

I'm gonna switch plugs when I go to the dyno. Probably going to re-gap them for the added boost pressure cause I'll be close to 1.5-2 bar. Shooting for 500hp, If I can manage I'm going to shoot for 500whp.

Well I brought my engine and car home from my last job because my old boss was being a cunt and went back on his word so I couldn't use a lift one night to get it all together. So while moving my engine and stand toward the door the engine tipped on the stand and cracked the compressor hosing on my turbo..so fucking pissed I picked my rb up and tossed it into my truck. Well since adrenaline was pumping to the max I didn't notice I tore my knees all up and pulled something in my back. My backs feeling alright but holy fuck is it hard to stand.
Trying to get it into my shed was such a task even with help from a friend. These engines are fucking heavy! I just hope everything else is alright. Thankfully my new turbo should be here tomorrow.

Ill be having a couple things for sale if anyone needs some rb parts. I'll have a Skyo turbo outlet for sale now since my turbo is junk. So if anyone needs a really nice piece just let me know.

Thanks man! I'm told it's a Doc racing manifold but it's slightly different from the ones I've seen. Thanks for that link that helped a bunch! Now it makes sense that front oil feed is for the vvt.

Well I figured it out now. The front one is for vvt, so that will stay stock for now. I'll block the middle and leave the rear one stock also for now.
Either going will spool import gears for my stock pump, or n1. Max hp for now will be 500. If I decide to go past that ill look into a tomei or Jun pump.

The guy who is going to be machining my stuff is going into surgery soon for disks in his back and is suppose to be out for close to a year :/ I'm currently applying for the machine shop he runs in the back of auto value, I'll just help out until he returns and maybe even stay on after he returns ^.^ who knows! The knowledge is treasure in its own! I might end up machining my engine fo free! Ya baby :)

I graduated honors in machine tool technology so hopefully I can use my knowledge to use!

Found where I'm staying everytime I go to minneapolis, very nice people also and the breakfast was awesome.

Waiting for the engine to come back from the machine shop. No one around here wanted to knife edge my rb26 crank so just a balance and micro polish for now. Only shooting for 500whp. Might even be less since I plan to really get into the tune and perfect things.

Ain't that the truth? Only downfall I think is the weight ratio but with the battery and fuel cell/surge tank in the rear and tubed front should bring it close to 50/50. I might run two cells for separate fuels, still undecided.

Haha that's true! The 500hp will be on E85 and I'll have two tunes for 91. Max hp and a solid 325-380hp tune. Maybe even a highway tune at some point, I might as well put the aem to work :D

I also picked up some rb26 knock sensor but they are bolt on type and the rb25 takes screw in type. Will the rb26 knock sensors work for the rb25?

I'm happy with the zero lift mounts, I had to pound my fire wall in quite a bit to clear bel housing. The crossmember is the way to go but I got a deal on the engine and mount kit with driveshaft.

Small update!! Machine shop job fellout so I went back to an old job. Running heavy equipment laying drain tile. Okay money but workin close to 80 hour weeks! Layed off come winter :)
My engine is about a week out from the machine shop and parts are just rollin in. Oil pump is next and IC piping and it should be complete. Onto the good stuff!!!

Lost a spring when I cleaned my lifters so finally have that replaced and I noticed a snapped piston ring so now I gotta order another new set. Cams are resting on the head, just waiting to buy new rings and I'll have it all together with a huge update! Stay tuned!

Tearing all the lifters apart and cleaning them is quite a job but well worth it! All soaked in oil and going in!

Head on and torqued, intake and exhaust manifold on with all new hardware. I got a hook up from a buddy at fastnal, all SS Allen head bolts for the intake manifold. $5 :)

Turbo and wastegate lines are on there way! I'm gonna be running my ic pipes from my old turbo to break the engine in. Before dyno I will have new piping to accommodate my q45tb and some odds and ends.

Good news and bad news. Got my turbo/wastegate lines in and they all seem a bit long. Luckily I was able to cut my turbo drain! I love an fittings I think I might do everything an!

The -4 to feed my turbo and wastegate are a bit long but I have to route around my exhaust with minimal room so it actually helps some and shouldn't affect performance! The drain however was 11 inches too long so no beauno. I'll test fit that later today!

I plan to put 5,000 miles on this engine before I dyno.
I still need tension rods, fluids, catch can setup and my exhaust done before I can break the engine in.
Before dyno I need turbo blanket, tires and my ic piping done right.

I start a new job tomorrow so hopefully this will be done soon!

Doin some work! All that's left is cutting one an line for the wastegate, tension rods, some exhaust love and catch can and finish the wiring so I can put my dash back in ill be ready to drive!
Somehow took my existing ic piping and made it work! Before I head to the dyno I'm going to re route the piping to clean it up and do 2.5 from turbo to ic and 3" after ic to TB. Can't wait!

Yup, you can pick the relays and fuses apart and with a little force they fit through into the cab! I'll let you know when I get it done, the headlights and turn signals and a couple others need to be lengthen to the front.

The rods were done but I have faith in the mains. Maybe if they were separate caps like a SBC but it's one huge gurdle.

When it all went back together it spun freely and smooth, after the dyno when I can run premium gas instead of e85 only I'll rip the oil pan off and check the bearings just incase.

It hurts me every time I see someone install a silicone elbow right off the turbo compressor housing. I've said it a thousand times and I'll say it again. That silicone elbow will work just fine if you're cruising around on low boost. Someday, when you're pulling on full boost, that silicone elbow will split open, giving you a boost leak. It is guaranteed to fail. You can keep replacing the silicone elbow or you can have a proper metal elbow welded on.

I 100% agree with you on the elbow! This is only tempory until I bring it to the dyno. It's my old ic piping from my stock rb25 turbo that I made fit to break the engine in.
I'm running a E85 tune at 10psi for my stock rb25 turbo. I want 5,000 miles on before I take the 4 hour trip one way to have it dyno tuned. My only concern is it's boost comp tuning but my wastegate is only set to 5psi so I'll just monitor my af/r and adjust accordingly.

Before dyno tune I'll have 2.5inch from turbo to ic and 3inch from ic to intake manifold. If I can swing it, hpi clamps but we'll see

Been doing some little things, running wires, hooking up fuel. My chassis harness from engine to body is lookin better. Wish I snapped a pic but my interior was a pile of wires but now one relay box will be located behind the driver seat and the other is in the hatch by my battery.

Just cut the headlight plugs last night and gonna start the lengthening. Engine is pretty much wired in, tucked some wires too.

Good eye man! I've been needing to add one in, my only issue is while boosting the brakes don't really work. For daily driving it's no issue but would be a big problem on the track. I'm trying to find some sort of check valve block.

I'm in need of a good catch can. Anyone have any recommendations? I want 2 an fittings in(close to -12) and a breather and or one more an fitting for vacuum. Don't want drain. Would love baffles but I don't wanna go custom cause they're expensive.

Dash is in and just need to do some wiring. Trimmed up my rad support so I could flip my fans. Tight fit but it will work. Pics up tonight!

Quit my job so I'm unemployed. Was working in 38 degrees sweating profusely and they told me I had to work harder..so I told them what they had to do and graciously left.

Need catch can setup, tension rods and finish wiring and I can break it in, so for now it's back to flipping stuff to make ends meet. Hopefully I don't have to sell this :/

Hey fuckers! I know you all are interested in seeing this bitch run! Well I have some good news but a couple problems.

I'm at the point of starting it and bring it up to temp to break this engine in but I can't seem to get the engine to crank by ignition. I've jumped my starter so it's not that, on the second battery with new terminal ends.

I thought my grounds weren't working but if I'm able to jump the starter, I don't see how the grounds could be bad.( I did have a loose neg cable so when I jumped the starter my power cut out, tighten the cable and now it spins good when I jump the starter)

When I turn my key to start everything goes off(a/f gauge,CD player, dash lights,everything) once I release the key it all comes back, If my memory serves me tho, it's been like this for years.
I can also feel/hear the ACC click and one of the relays attached to the kick Fuse-panal.

I did have to lengthen a bunch of wires since I relocated my relays to my hatch but 98% of that was connecting one wire and matching the color(I can't fuck that up) there was a ground or two I didn't run the full way, just grounded it someplace else.

My last issue is my tps sensor. I went q45 and it came with a rb s1 tps sensor. I tried setting it with my aem but it's stuck at 80% throttle it says. The throttle is closed.

I have searched and searched but no luck :/

Update!
Got most bugs worked out but it is in dire need of a tune. When I hit 14psi I popped a coupler off and thought I blew the turbo.
The last pull of the night I got a lil on it and clipped a deer at 120..thankfully it only ruined my driver side flip up and pushed my core in a bit but that's pulled out.
I'm running about 15w35 and my oil pressure is sky high! About 80psi at idle and 116psi at wot. So for now I'm not going to drive it until I get it to the dyno. I'm leaning towards a 0w20 to hopefully bring my pressure down some.

In the process of collecting parts to get this beast on the road again. I'm still in need of a tune but doing research to tackle tuning the aem myself. I've programmed plcs before so I have a good idea, just need to learn the arm.

Things I need
A pop up light assembly
Trying to find a small 3inch flex pipe if anyone knows of some.
A new wideband. My aem one is sketch and doesn't read right.

I have a new steering wheel and cnc staging break ready to go in.

Ohh yeah I just remembered I bought a new project. A 1986 Mazda rx7 needs a transmission and engine rebuild. Came with full cage and pbm coils. Pics will be up later this week.
