View Full Version : Quick question on Sway bar settings (having a problem with understeer)

At the autox yesterday my car was understeering slighty all day. This is the first time I have encoutered this with my car. Usually it is very neutral with slight oversteer. The only thing that I have added since the last event has been a rear strut tower bar and new tires (235/40/17 all around . . . replaced 215/45/17) Now I thought the RSTB would have given me more snap in the rear end but apparently it has given me a bit more grip so I need to make some adjustments. Right now my whiteline sways are set to full stiff front and rear. My idea is to loosen the front sway bar by one adjustment and see if that cures the problem. Is thinking correct? I dont want to do extra work.
Thanks
Ryan
P.S. I played with tire pressures during my 4 runs but to no avail. I started off with my usual 40psi front and 38 rear and then kept dropping the front pressure and ended with 37 front and 40 rear.

If you make the front sway bar softer that should make your car more nutruel, I think it is becuase the front will roll a little more instead of imediatly slipping, that should give the rear more time to step out. I always thought that less tire pressure in front and more in the rear would help the car oversteer??? you can also set your kyb's to 3 front and 7 or 8 in the rear.( your kyb's can also dial in some more oversteer or less understeer) How do like those intrax's, I was considering buying some, but I could'nt find the spring rates for them. Are they stiff enough? I ended up buying RS*R race springs, and they are almost perfect for street/track use. <definetly not a soft spring @ 5 kg/mm's fr. & 4kg/mm's Rear. They only lower my car 1.6 fr. & 1.4 rear though.

The intrax's are good for the street but could stand to be a bit stiffer for autox. A good bang for the buck upgrade over stock but I am ready for adjustable suspension now. The kyb's I have are just the GR-2's. JIC FLT A2's are on the list for next summer. I did the springs and struts a couple years ago when my wallet couldnt handle much more than that. Thanks for the advice.

I would definitely say to soften up your front bar.
On street tires, I think you're probably running too much bar all around if you're full stiff. I don't run full stiff on a fully caged (super stuff chassis) race car. Remember, a stiffer sway bar is effectively raising your spring rate as the car corners...higher spring rate=less grip and predictability.
A little sway isn't always bad.
Soften up your bars a lot and check to see if you're hitting bump stops. A quick and easy test to tell if you're hitting the stops is to put a little colored grease or something at the bottom of your bump stop, go out and flog the car through the corners. If any of the grease transfers to the strut, you're on the bump stops and should stiffen the bars until you don't hit anymore.

I've played around with the settings on the KYBs and I don't really think that's going to help with the understeer. Maybe it would if the car is pushing on initial turn-in but once the car is settled into the turn, the shocks have already done their job. The shocks will do their thing on transitions and will help maintain on uneven surfaces.
