The problem that I am having is that I just replaced the lifters (gas shocks) to the trunk of my 90 S13 and the only way it will open is either by having the latch insede pulled of having the key turned and lifting it. To my knowledge I thought that the hatch is supposed to pop open, anybody know what i should look over?
Thanks...

i don't have a hatch, but it seems to me that your hatch works fine..it's not suppose to shoot open, you still have to lift up on it...atleast thats how i've seen it on every other hatchback.

So i have the same problem.... When i pull the hatch release inside, my hatch will not release. I have to hold the release inside the car and pull the hatch open at the same time. I have no key, so its a frustrating process.
I think what you mean by the "POP" is the hatch releasing from the lock so that you can put the lever back down inside and walk around and open it.
So to help you out (because i have the same problem). How do you get the hatch to release from the lock correctly so that you dont have to hold the lever and pull the hatch open at the same time? Its hard to be in two places at once.
P.S. I am subscribing. hope to get a solution.

I'm sure you could figure something out, like new rubber stopper thingies or even add to then with something like injector insulators. just something to add more tension or adjust the latch.

maybe the release cable is stretched out or broke?
i have the issue with a COUPE right now, just ordered some lines. gonna see if that fixes the issue, will report back.

lol, on my car, the hatch pops open just fine with the lever, but if I close my door too hard, the impact will cause the hatch to lock back into place! So I either have to close my door softly or leave my door open then open up the hatch all the way! Annoying sometimes lol.

im too lazy to go look at the moment...but last i remember the latch mechanism on the s13 hatch is the same as the door...that means you can adjust the latch placement...pull off your hatch trunk panels and grab a wrench...play around with the alignment of the latch itself...set it lower than its sitting currently and tighten it down...that should do the trick
you can also try cleaning it and lubing it up with a little grease and WD40...works wonders for the hood latch issue most people have

i think if you replace item 90100B that should be the rubber part that pushes the hatch up when you open the lock. BTW where did you get the shocks and were you able to replace the plastic pieces on the bottom bolt?

It appears I'm missing that 90816 thingy, this may be the culprit to my slight problem.

Correct answer goes to this guy.
So many of you have no idea how it works, but this 23 year old realizes its just a simple thing that needs to be replaced. I have the same issue myself, its because I stretched it by accident. The end.

Damn alot of us have this problem and here is the solution.
The problem with your hatch release isn't the cable, it's that there isn't enough pre-load on the hatch to make it jump up once the cable releases the latch. You have to lower the half of the latching mechanicsm that is stationary on the car (not on the hatch). THere are two 10mm nuts that you can loosen, and then slide it down. Don't move it too far down or the hatch won't lock. Make sure it's at the right angle so you don't bend anything when you try to shut it. www.northwestnissans.com/board/showthread.php?t=49350 (http://www.northwestnissans.com/board/showthread.php?t=49350)

I was looking around at parts store and they all had to special ordered, but I got lucky at pepboys and they had some available. Thy're pretty much universal because they came with their own hardware in wich you dont use the bolts or washer that you had.

the "locking" mechanism of the hatch needs to be adjusted..
Loosen the bolts that hold it in place and lower is a little..
That will fix your problem

Holy old thread. Did you try replacing the rubber as stated above? The two "bolts" are the 10mm NUTs that actually hold the latch mech to the chassis(top two in your picture).

tightening that latch so its pulled down far is harder than it seems, ive tried it so many times and it keeps moving back up
mine used to pop off the latch when i pulled the lever, so i could let it back down the go to the back of the car and lift. after a car accident with a SLIGHT bump in the rear, the thing doesnt do it anymore. any ideas?
trunk didn't seemed pushed in. rubbers still there

The rubbers compress and degrade over time try a set of fresh ones and see if it helps. its cheap enough from the dealer.

Great success! So my buddy showed me a trick today those rubber pieces on the hatch or "nuts" DO in fact compress as ze12o said. My friend grabbed two screws and pushed them into the holes on the rubber pieces and closed the truck and told me to try it then and POP! Works like a charm now

what?
and for my problem, i have the rubber, and they worked fine before. i highly doubt a rear tap would have enough power to degrade the quality of rubber

Hard to put what I mean in words.. try double sided taping 2 washers under each rubber and try again.
I know getting rear ended wont do anything to the rubber. What I meant was the rubber is degraded and it won't have the same rebound as a new one. Even if it worked before try a new pair. They are over 15 years old and spend most of their lives compressed. They should be a couple of bucks new from the dealer. Why not give it a try?

So there are holes in the rubber pieces large enough for a smaller screw, if you put one in each side with a thicker head, itll give the hatchthat extra pop it needs. Sounds weird, but it works.

From the FSM pic above:
I'm pretty sure I know what 90100B is. They're super hard as nails on my old hatch. I'm gonna order 2 new ones. How do you remove them exactly? Are they just pressed in? Or do they have a scre/bolt/nut on the inside of the hatch holding them in?
Anybody have any idea what part 90816 is? Anybody have any pics of this?
Also, my hatch sits lower than the body when looking at the tail lights. like this:

Anybody had experience with those bumpers (part 90100B) fixing misalignment issues as well as hatch popping issues?
