Going to copy/paste my post from NWN.

---------------------

So I searched through hours of pages but haven't really come up on a solid answer to this.

Finishing up my SR swap and basically went to go try and crank it over for the first time today. When I went to crank all we heard was a whining noise - the starter. Anyways, seems like the starter isn't engaging the flywheel.

Pulled the starter off to check it out. Didn't have a volt meter or anything so we went to O'Reilys and got it tested on their setup over there. It passed all their tests, the shaft came out and it spun nicely.. but from what I've heard that doesn't prove much.

Anyways, came back and put it back in and the same thing happened. I'm pretty sure this isn't a flywheel problem. The teeth look good good enough that it should catch.. I got this motor from a buddy of mine and it worked perfectly fine then.

One thing that I do want to mention is my car was an automatic, and we are in the process of doing the 5spd conversion. We have not installed the clutch pedal yet but we will be doing that tomorrow. Could this be the problem? Or is it a starter problem after all? We figured once the pedal is in we can really make sure everything is in neutral and hopefully it'll engage from there..

Thanks!

-- update --

Gave the starter a tap and no luck. Hit it a few times as well while cranking and nothing!

It's a very loud noise, like it's spinning; semi like a drill.

Installed the clutch pedal, etc. Everything looks like it is installed correctly but we did find out that the neutral safety switch is broken on my tranny so we missed connecting that up. Could that be an issue in this as well? I do need to find out what car I can grab that from to replace it so if anyone has insight on that, that'd be great.

Gonna go get a multi meter tomorrow.

My battery is new from frsport (westco mini), haven't checked voltage on that but will be Doing that tomorrow as well.

Anymore insight? I guess it'll be best to try a different starter as well.

--- edit ---
Wanted to add in that whenever I go to crank the motor, my sound system cuts out and tuns off/resets. All the other electrical components stay on, i.e. lights, dome light, but my whole deck turns off. Not sure if that's a major problem.

I'll try to get a video for the sound.

---------------------

So I went through and tried some things.. made sure all the connectors look good and they do. Also tried cranking up while hitting the starter, didn't help much. Going to get a multimeter tomorrow to check it out, etc. What else could be going wrong?

Is the power wire connected to it haha? Can you push start your car?

I don't think you have it wired right. Sounds like power isn't getting to solenoid on your setup. Have someone else crank and look if solenoid is working. If your gear is worn it wont engage with flywheel properly, same is true of ring gear on fw. Your radio cutting out sounds like wiring issue as well. Or due to high draw on low amp mini battery.

I'll go back and check the wiring again. Pretty sure it's all good but who knows. Radio would prob. be high draw on the low amp, all of my wiring is new basically :(

we used brand new wiring specialties harness, so i dont think the wiring is the issue. i suspect it might be the starter. i will try to turn the motor over by the crank pulley to see if turns over easy. if it does, then ill try to compression start it.

i believe its the starter
its not coming out/retracting cleanly and cuasing the noise

i had a new starter from napa put in a car.. shit sounded like that but worst. finally got another new one and it starts perfectly

you can test the starter on the car to see if it makes the noise just cranking eliminating any other engine noises

power to the 12volt nut
ground the body of starter
make a jumper +12v to the solenoid wire
