Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums here, and very new to the car. All I know is that I love how the car looks. I currently have a 99 2.5 RS Impreza, but I'm thinking about selling it for a 240sx.
So a couple of things I need to know, how does the whole engine swap for the SRD something or other come about? are the engines common?
Also, does it cost a lot for things like lighting, or S15 headlights, I'm very new to the prices for this car. And, if I were to just jump into modding after I get the car, what kinds of prices should I expect, all very high thousands and such?
Also, how much would a new 240 cost me, new as in say 98. I'm thinking the only way I'd be getting a 240 is if it were a bit newer.
And, what was the last year for the 240?
Ok, just a few newbie q's, thanks very much.

'98 was the last year they were made in the US. For a '98, expect a price of about 13-14 grand or so...
Motor swaps run a couple thousand (JDM motor for our cars -SR20DET- is most comonly found at $3000-$4000 installed). You can also choose to turbo the stock (USDM KA240DE) engine on the car. Turbo kits also run around $4000. The SR20DET motors are actually very common. It surprised me (at first) to see more SR20DET's at our local meets than there are KA24DE's.
S15 front-end conversion is about $1000... I believe. There's quite a few topics that do contain the information about it in this forum, so if you want to get more accurate, use the "Search" option, perhaps you'll get some better numbers.
Performance products aren't as cheap as they are for the Honda market, I'm sure you've seen your share of that, being an Impreza owner. To do everything necessary to the car, I would prepare around $7000. That should cover absolutely everything including your turbo. Without a turbo, look at about $2000-$3000 for decent upgrades (intake, exhaust, LSD, clutch & flywheel, brakes, suspension...)
Any more questions?

(This was at the recent Boston meet). The cheapest I've seen for a swap is $4000.... with all stock SR components.

The cheapest kits seem to be XS and NSport... around $3300.... Of course, you could always research and build your own kit, sourcing your own parts for a considerably lower price. FYI: the highest known HP on a stock internal KA (S14... '95-98) is 320 at the wheels.

That's like... just the headlights.... I've seen as high as $2000 for the Xenons.... the number off the top of my head for the S15 conversion is $3000.
As for modding a car.... the numbers add up... let's just say I could have an SR in my car right now if it weren't for my suspension and other random upgrades. (And half a turbo project). With all the things I'm planning, the numbers are well over double of what I bought the car for.... anyways, Good Luck! And stay away from those casinos >__< (unlike me)

Depends where you go, really. A local body shop had the headlights only for under $500, but nothing else. They don't import the parts, they got a pair from a guy who was gonna have them install it on his car, but the guy went to prison and told them to keep the headlights or sell them. So... they're installing them on this guy's '95 automatic base-model 240 with a muffler tip. Sad, I tell you...
Oh, and I thought I was pretty accurate with prices... for performance upgrades.

yeah, i was just stating that my ambition far exceeds my wallet. And $500 for lights?? Good Lord that's cheap... but to convert don't you need fenders, hood, bumper, etc?? Are they really gonna retro fit all of it to just the headlights?? that's interesting.....
