I don't really see it as fraud. Maybe he's just wondering if his car gets totaled he will get screwed out of it.

Call us jaded but .... He lives in Socal and he is talking about trying to find out the value of his s13 with mods and he has full coverage. Plus he is talking about his car being a money pit, which means he feels he can't sell it for near what he has in it. LOL

It looks and sounds fishy. Oh and the living in Socal thing plays big. As it seems like everyone down here try's to come up on auto insurance claims.

I have just seen it to many times here.

I honestly hope I am wrong but would not surprised if I was right. LOL

its really up in the air. I'm worried about the same thing, i would hate for some jackass to wreck my car only to be paid kbb and losing alot of what i put into my money pit. Even if it is a money pit, i continue to put in money because i dont plan on selling it. Even if im not planning on selling it, i still worry about it being stolen or wrecked. Especially in socal where most people drive like assholes and are always in a hurry.

When my 240 got rear ended by some old lady, the body shop fudged the numbers b/c he didn't want to see my coupe get totaled by the insurance peoplez. So i got a discount and got my car back ^_^. He gets all my parts for paint, nowadays :p :p

i am fairly certian you can call your insurance complany and have the car insure for a higher dollar amount. that, or have tha car appraised. then talk to your insurance company. expect your monthly premium to go up either way:rant:

Yeah there are a few ways to set up an insurance policy. Most people go by the blue book. Car gets totaled, they give you blue book. You can however set the policy up so you tell them what the car is worth to you, and they write you a premium based on that. You CAN insure a $1300 car for $10,000 if you want.. but if you total it the next month, its gonna look fishy as hell.

Assuming that this post was made with honest intentions:

Usually in the case of a modified vehicle you can have an insurance adjuster adjust the value of the car in the case of an accident as long as you have receipts to back up the cost of the parts and work done to the car. This is commonly done with cars in the case of simple things like radios and sound equipment but can also extend to other parts as well.

Or you can look into insurance companies that specialize in Classic and Modified Vehicles and they'll assess the car at a fairer price than a normal insurance agency.

when my 240 got totaled(this is 2001 probably) they offered my $3k for my car. i gave them reciepts(key word) for over 10k in parts. after fighting for 3 months i settles with $6500. mostly because i put a new engine in it 6 days before the accident and they gave me all the engine money back. good luck and prepare for a fight.

the day some idiot totals my fucking life. yes my car is my life. is the day you will hear on the news "crazy ass white dood goes on rampage and kills all honda owners with fart cannons and stuffed animals hanging from bumer" i dunno. emotionally i couldnt deal with looking at my car destroyed. there would be me, a fucked up car, and a dead guy. some dick hit my car with his door in a parking lot. i introduced his face to some asphalt. and the sherrif introduced me to some handcuffs. omg. ive already planned the day i walk to my car and see that my brother moved my car out of the driveway and accidentally curbed my Volks. sweet mother of god.

I called my insurance company & asked them about this. I used to have an S13 with about $6,000 into it. They said that I would need to show receipts for every dollar I put into the car, and even then I was not able to get anything in writing that they would 100% compensate me. That was part of the reason I sold the car - seemed like too much of a liability to me. But then again, so was having a car that was loaded from the factory... I lost just as much in depreciation as I would have if insurance only gave my KBB on my S13. Seems with cars you just can't win.

uhhhh grow up?

As it has been said before, some insurance companies will have you provide receipts of any aftermarket parts to your car. Incase it gets stolen or damaged, you have proof of its worth.

Ok to the OP since you say this is a honest question.

You want to insist that the Insurance company asses the the car at ACV aka actual cash value.

That is based of what a similarly equipped car is selling for in your local area. Used dealer lot prices and stuff like craigslist ads.

my boy Scott, up the bay area, did ok when a guy totaled his S13, this way.
When my previous G20 1993.5( with low mileage) got totaled, the insurance company gave me $2900 based on ACV.
It worked out. Though you have to be diligent. Its there job to pay out the least amount of money that they have too.

Oh and realize that given you live in Cali and by the way you stated your original question, it did look suspicious to us. LOL

I have to disagree, my brother is a Farmers insurance agent and they always pay out good as long as you get full coverage and good rate. If you get cheap rate, you get payed out small. He also told me that Farmers doesnt go by KBB, they use Edmunds. Either way, both KBB & Edmunds suck in comparison to TMV, but he told me if you show proof of another dealership in the area selling a similar car at higher price you can get it at that value.

It depends on the insurance company, each one chooses a different way to calculate vehicle worth. There are some who base it off of KBB and others that offer TMV... TMV is the actual cost of replacing the vehicle. If you have mods, consider purchasing additional coverage - your policy is only covering your stock car.

A good rule of thumb is that the premier companies pay out better... IE: Farmers and State Farm, hence why the premiums for these companies are higher than some others. You pay for what you get..

Have you thought of just purchasing collateral insurance. It's kind of a big thing over here since all the rednecks as people like to call us have way more invested into a 500$ car than most bmw owners. Usually you can get somewhere around 15K or so almost no questions asked. More than that you have to start showing receipts. It's not car insurance and you can have it on top of your car insurance so if anything happens to YOUR baby. You might be able to have another one. Just an idea. and usually premieums arent too bad.

Metropolitan Life does Actual Cash Value
Wawanesa covers aftermarket upgrades
Triple A does Actual Cash Value

and those are just companies I know about off the top of my head.

Wawanesa does not cover aftermarket upgrades as per their policy. You may get lucky and some companies may pay out on some stuff... But this cannot be made as a blanket statement, as every insurance co offers optional additional coverage and if you fail to buy it - they can and 9X% of the time will deny your request to cover additional parts youve placed on your car. I have had friends get denied by Wawa. =T

You missed an 's' and I giggled.

Seriously though, some dick hole totaled my 240 which had a fair amount of mods on it, I showed the agent craiglist adds for comparable cars in my area and got about $1500 more.

Sure I coulda fought and bitched and whined and maybe gotten a little more but time is money.

My bad Wawanesa used to cover upgrades back in 2001 when I used to have them. Sure you would pay extra for it but it was an option at that time.

Now before you go saying I was making a blanket statement and try to put words in my mouth I did not. Check yourself there.

I stated some companies do ACV which is true. I made a mistake on Wawanesa because they have changed their ways. Insurance companies do that.

You need to watch how you throw your own statements around before telling other people about theirs.
