View Full Version : Wiring an electric fan to a switch?

I have an electric fan I'm wanting to install because my clutch fan finally gave it. It pretty much looks basic like this, with those same two wires.

My question is, how would I just hook it up to a switch, so when I want it on, I can have it on @ full speed. I don't want to do any of that crap where I have to wire a relay or whatnot, I just want a switch where off is off, and on is full speed.

you'll need a 20 amp 2 way switch from autozone. 8 gauge wire. and other knick-knacks for the connections.
its as simple as 1-2-3.
connect blue wire with the switch> switch to the battery. and black wire to ground...
viola!

have the same setup on my S13... easier than wiring everything up to relay and blah blah.. only problem is, you have to turn the switch off when you turn the car off because its directed to the battery. but that doesnt bother me

Cool, thanks a lot.

Just wire it to your fog light circuit and run a bigger fuse.

At least put a relay into a switched source. I swear everyone I know that has called me to get a jump after they have left the fan on.

+1, please please get a relay.
I'm not really a fan of using a switch for radiator fans, but to each his own. I really prefer a thermostat type system so you don't have such a constant draw on your electrical system.

^ I disagree.. I had a thermostat system and it wouldn't ever work properly.. and was harder to diagnose because of all the extra wiring.

I now use this same system, but with 2 seperate fans. I highly suggest getting switches that light up... it makes it a lot easier to remember to turn them off.

Damn some of you kids are ghetto.
Just get a DIF Controller. Its really easy to wire up and is its own system so you wont have to worry about melting the stock wiring system

Extra wiring?
It's a pretty simple circuit.
Hmm. I've never had a problem with my thermostat setup working properly. Maybe you had a defective unit? Bad grounds? Weird.

Everyone to each of their own. The DIF is costly and not necessary for a daily imo. I put my whole fan system in front of autozone.
done and done.. and i got the 20amp with that red cover switch(like those NOS button lol) right next to my e-brake. no biggie.
When i had it wired with my thermostat my car would run slightly hotter than normal before turning on, and if i dont want it to get there, i have to drive with my A/C button down... and i wasnt digging that. so i jst wired the E-fan on its own.

I find it absolutely fucking retarded that people do all this stupid shit like putting in a new circuit and a switch to run the fan. The car is fully prewired with a relay, switched power source, and enough current to run up to 30 amps.
Take the trigger wire to the OE relay, cut it, and run a low current SPST switch through it.
Done. Keeps the entire circuit factory, safe, and clean.

^I thought that was just S14? Are you talking about the A/C condenser pusher fan? Where's they wiring?

That's how I wire them every time, but he said he didn't even want to wire a relay in. Now that's just lame and why i didn't even post to figure out if he even had AC hooked up.
If anything the OEM circuit can be used to trigger the power. with or without the factory AC fan.

Type oh? lol Should they be coming out right from the battery?

No AC.

Add a 20amp Fuse to OE relay 12v out to positive fan wire , run the negative side of fan's wire to the switches leg, run the other leg of switch to ground.
Note. The fan will be controllable from whenever the relay has been energized. ie. when power is off you can't turn on your fan. You may want to use an illuminated toggle switch.
That's the easiest way I can think of, that is effective.
you might even be able to forgo the fuse, but we're playing it safe.

S13 and S14. Wiring is the same (though not color), you just have a single speed fan on an S13. I don't recall the wire colors offhand. Even on cars sold without A/C, the wiring exists in the harness. The only time you'd not use this is on a SOHC car, since it uses a temp switch in the lower radiator hose.
