I have a fuel cell set up in my s13 race car. I've had tons of problems with little pieces of the foam breaking off and clogging my fuel filter. I also have a fuel surge tank set up in the car.

My question is would it be ok to run without the foam? I don't think there is any baffling in the tank which worries me, but by keeping the level high and using the surge system I think it might be ok. Anyone have any experience with this?

I'd call the manufacturer. you might be able to get them to replace it if it's faulty.

The foam is part baffle part safety feature. It keeps it from all sloshing out at once in case of an accident.

Yea I hear that, but if the car barely runs 1/2 the time then I can't really get in an accident in the first place haha. I'm replacing the fuel filter with an aeromotive which has a lot more filtration surface area. I was using a summit one which was less than optimal. I guess I'll do that and see how it works. I guess the fuel filter is standard maintenance when you run that foam.

It's so hard to shake down track cars, and I end up wasting track days with stupid problems.

Yea sometimes I want to be just like you. This shit has been a nightmare 1/2 the time and the other 1/2 its brilliant.

Summit racing. It came with some foam, but it sat around for a year or so and once I started using it it was ok, but after a few track days I started to have problems. I replaced the filter and the foam and it was fine for a few more, then same problem. I'm just going without it.

Edit: The cell is good for the money, I just need to invest in better foam (ATL or Fuel Safe).

Have you considered bossing up and possibly buying a better fuel cell?

It's not a problem with the cell. Only thing I could gain from a nicer cell is safety, and I definitely plan on burning alive in my car one of these days.

This cell is legal for all the drifting I do, so no need to spend 1k+ on a new cell.

The foam is easy to install so if I decide to buy better stuff and install it, its like a 3 second job.

Why not just pull the foam out and replace it with different fuel cell foam? It is replaceable you know... I have thought about stuffing the stock tank full of foam myself...

Yea I might do that as well. I think the summit foam is pretty low quality because I have replaced it with the same problems. I just need to save my pennies for the good shit.

I agree, there are a lot of good companies out there and it's not like you have to buy foam from the same company you got the cell from. We used to get it from one called Fuel Safe when we ran roundy round cars.

Sorry to bring up a old thread, but im doing a fuel cell here in the next couple weeks, and i was wondering the same about the foam. OP did you ever end up going with the better foam? If so have you had any problems yet?

I saw you said above you edit: your post and you said get higher quality foam, but i was wondering if anything has happened since you went with your higher quality foam.

Also Would it be ok if i ran my walbro pump from my sr in my stock fuel tank for my sender?

I've got some personal friends who have had issues with the Summitt foam, having the same exact problems as you too. THey all put in new different brand foam and haven't had issues since.

I haven't put any foam back in. I've just been running without foam.

Depending on the cell you choose you probably won't be able to use the stock fuel pump set up. Look into a legit dual pump external set up with a surge.

And haven't burned alive in your car yet, so that's good.

Why would running no foam in a fuel cell be more dangerous than running a stock fuel tank? The fuel cell is 2x as thick steal conpared to stock, not to mention it sits higher and has a cage around it.

I'm sure it's not an issue, but this was mentioned earlier.

The foam is part baffle part safety feature. It keeps it from all sloshing out at once in case of an accident.

Plus you mentioned you were planning on burning alive in your car. Just glad that hasn't happened yet. It was a joke. Never mind.

I have seen this problem in alot of racecars, sometimes it has caused messed up fuel pumps, innjectors etc. ditch it, just run without it and dont back the car into walls doign 100mph

Summitracing fuel cell? I hear the foam they use is crap. Seen a ton of cars with that junk in the cell.

The ATL cells have solid foam, never heard someone complain about it breaking up.
