View Full Version : Could a 1.3 bar radiator cap make my water pump gasket blow?

If so, then I am an idiot. I picked up a Cusco High Pressure radiator cap today (it came off an S13 front clip). After about 10 min. of driving, I overheated... Filled up with coolant, and made it about 10 miles before it leaked out again. This time I realized its leaking from the water pump area. I'm thinking its the housing gasket. Do you guys think the higher pressure (1.3 instead of the stock .8/.9) caused the gasket to go?

Update: took off the water pump... NO GASKET! Just minimal amounts of gasket sealer... I guess the previous owner had a cheap or shady mechanic. Obviously it didn't hold with the extra pressure...

there is no OEM gasket for that...just RTV.

I would not use it. greddy sells the 1.1Bar radiator cap and when i put that on my car, my water temp was all over the place, then i started to get coolant leaks EVERYWHERE.

Yeah, but you may have had the same issue (old gasket sealer letting the pressure escape). I wish more people with high pressure cap experience would reply. I don't want to put it back together only to have it pop on me again, and I don't have the stock cap (left it on the clip I got the Cusco from).

thats odd, when I put my Greddy high pressure cap on, my car actually ran a little cooler (that and it was coupled with redline water wetter) The temp. use to creep a little past the middle area, now it just stays right below it and doesn't even budge. Looks like you cooling systems need some tuning up.

Well I am not saying it will cause that but it happened to me.

When i put the stock one back on, the Temp was back to normal and all my leaks went away.(or course after loosening the leaks, sealing again, then retightening)

It also happened to one of my local customers which was also a KA-T. Yet on Hondas they work like a charm.

I dont know what to say.

Ya it did lower the temp on this kids 93 240. And he had no problems with it and no leaks. I guess I had a bad experience with it.

OH Well, if it is working for you that is Great!!!

weird... 1.3 is the lowest pressure cap for Cusco

PRESSURE MAX COOLANT TEMP
1.3 bar 105.0 deg cent
1.9 bar 110.3 deg cent
2.0 bar 112.6 deg cent
2.3 bar 126.5 deg cent

Got Sileighty?
