Ok, I have red 1992 240sx coupe, and was wondering how to repaint the console, and shifter trim. I want to paint it black , even though i is already black, i just want a new look. The old plastic is scratched scrathed and faded
How do I go about painting it?
What brand of paint did you use?
Did you use primer?
Did you clear coat it?
If someone could give some instructions or help on how to do this, that would be a help. I already have removed my whole console with the shifter and radio trim.
Also, post some pictures of the final result.
Thanks.

dont have pictures but what i did was use spray dye. either sem dye or vinyl/carpet spray dye you can buy from checkers or any automotive store. i didn't use primer or clearcoat. just sprayed with a vinyl prep spray and cleaned it. then used flexible bond spray and then sprayed the dye after. looks good but it collects dust easy and scratches kinda easy.

Who makes this flexiable bond spray?...I never heard of it....maybe that's what I need on the plastic pieces I sprayed silver.
BTW....I used Vinyl spray paint to touch up the faded black door panels I got and change the color of my dashboard. I bought it at Advance Auto...you can also find it at PepBoys.

i think the flexible bond is made by sem but when i go home on friday i'll make sure. I got it at the same place i got the sem dye but might be different.

Yea, it is SEM...in my old car i repainted the whole interior of the car to change the look...I would not recommend the vinyl paint if the plastic is not flexible.

SEM is sold at auto painters' supply stores.

Any idea how much these parts new from Nissan would be?
Perhaps it would be better to do this in the long run and avoid any constant chipping/flaking.

They will be quite expensive.
Use http://www.parts.com to get a listed price on various pieces.
I found most of my pieces at a junkyard for a GOOD price.

If "console" = dashboard.......get a nice one off ebay if yours is jacked. Otherwise if "console" = the smooth black plastic that frames your radio area.....it's a pain. If you are going to re-color it, DONT use vynil/carpet spray dye....it flakes off over time. The first thing to do is use some spray grease/oil cleaner to get all the Armor All off the surface...otherwise the paint wont stick as well. Then, you can either buy some plastic primer, or skip this step. I saw a commercial on tv for some paint that is meant specifically for plastic. Your probably not going to find this at Walmart or Target, so goto Lowes or Home Depot. Anyways, I would use some 400 or 600 grit sand paper to allow the paint to stick. Give it a couple layers, and if the beads up....wetsand it between coats. Whatever you do, DONT use Testors model car paint...it leaves brush marks.

Go to your local Paint store and talk to a Sales Rep. Hopefully he can point you in the right direction because he would be the expert in this situation.
