I am upgrading my S13 SR's turbo to a S14 unit. I got it from a trade, and the stock T25 is on its way out already. Now I am considering a cam upgrade as well. Nothing crazy, just HKS step 1 cams or something similar, without upgrading other expensive parts (nothing over valve spring upgrade). This is in my daily driven S14. I am not a dyno queen. I do like my mid range powerband, when I can just step on it and it will go.

Now to my question:
Does aftermarket cams affect full boost rpm?
I understand the duration vs. lift, but should I go with 256 or 264 cam?
What is the benefit of step 2 cam vs. step 1 cam at the same duration, and shout I do so if I have the money?

Thanks
Jesse

I think stock cams would be fine with that turbo but thats jus my opinion on that. I wouldnt go any bigger than a 264 duration cam with a base T28 but only reason why i wouldnt go 256 is because if you ever want to go bigger as in turbo, those cams will hold you back a bit power wise.

The bigger cams will shift your power band more to the right.

Stay stock for a daily driver. Full boost RPM isn't really changed much, but lower to midrange torque on 264/264 Step 1's definitely goes down a bit.

You will be able to hit 300 rwhp or close to it with an S14 GT2560R and stock cams.

Get some tomei 256 poncams. You won't have to tune and you can retain vvt. Their awesome! I have them on my s14sr. I also did BC valve springs and tomei RAS...cheap $150 insurance while I was doing cams. Well worth the money and time and very reliable for daily driving. Nike - JUST DO IT!

the guy has an s13 sr20 in his s14.

I wouldnt go with cams if its your daily driver. like it was stated a few posts above the power band will be shifted more towards the right , which means you will have more top end rather then mid range power.

keep your mid range , save a couple hundred bucks and enjoy your t28 :bigok:

im actually thinking about putting some tomei 256 pro cams in my s14 sr, would i still be able to keep my VVT? or is it best to just eliminate that?

also i dunno what it is, but i hear a very faint ticking in the 2k rpms. maybe vvt? or timing chain? i know for a fact its not a bearing, i know what that sounds like, due to my last sr having a spun bearing..lol

unplug the VVT and the sound will go away.
