Hi Zilvia Friends,
I'm new to the 240sx car swapping but I'm trying to get into it and I know you guys have alot of experience in doing this. I have a few questions on what to do with my 1995 240sx (base model) as far as engin upgrades. Now, for the start I only have about $5k to start on what ever I decide to do with it. I want to get about 350-400hp out of my 240sx. In addition I'm not doing the work myself which means I have to take it to a shop and get the work done as well. So I know I will have to pay for labor as well and that is coming out of the $5k and I may add an extra $1k just for the labor. I would like to know what is the best option to go with which is the KA-T or the SR20 Blacktop? For starters my current KA24DE has about 142xxx miles on it and I use it as a DD for now. So I know off the bat that I have to rebulid the motor and get a turbo kit and and upgrade the cams. As for the SR20DET Blacktop, it comes turbo already but I have to get rocker arm stopers, mounts, and upgrade radiator. In addition to that I have to make sure the motor is in good condition as well. Please send me some of you guys experiences and let me know what is the best option to pick. I know the KA24 will have more tourqe and the SR20 will rev higher. But I just want to whipp some ass lol and have a fast car!

5k is not going to get you 300+hp unless you have a v8 to start with. sr vs ka is a drivers preference so its hard to say which to go with. i have a red top and im happy with that vs the old ka, but its all personal preference. try looking in the FAQ sections on the sr and ka to make your choice.

Hi Zilvia Friends,
I only have about $5000k to start on what ever I decide to do with it.
5000k = $5,000,000
what are you doing with an s chassis? go buy a nicer car.

- with $5k your not getting a LS swap
- with $5k you could get your motor rebuilt for about $2k-$3k and using the rest for a top mount set up with good tune
- with $5k you could get an SR swapped in for about $3k and using the rest for placing things since its out.
- with $5k you could invest in tools, hands on working on your car, and reserching to save you money to get more bang for your buck ....me personally i would get a 1jz or 2jz and you meet your goal...stock

If you want to boost your KA motor, you're going to need to rebuild it. ~2K-3K
A turbo is going to cost you about ~ 1K
A shop is going to charge you about ~1K
You're at 5K without even doing anything else like clutch upgrade, intercooler, exhaust, etc
SR motor set swap ~$1.6k - $2k
Upgraded turbo ~$1K
Engine Management ~$400 - 1.5K
Intercooler ~$500
Fuel System ~$200
Labor ~$1K
Etc maintenance costs
Even if you plan for $5K, it always ends up being more.
LS option, easiest for power, expensive up front.

Okay then, well I might just go with the KA-T then. I'll get more low end tourqe anyway and may whopp on some SR20's in the end!. After the rebuild and the tune and turbo. How many HP do you think i'll have?

it all depends on what size turbo you throw on...and if you actually build the motor i.e pistons, rods etc

ditto, a simple t3/t4 top mount will do you good.

If you going ka-t, forge the bottom end and rebuild the head. Then piece together a t3 setup, if you cant put it on yourself, find someone on your local forums that can do it. Will be cheaper than having a shop do it. Once put together, go get it tuned at a shop. Can be done for 5k.

It all depends on what you are trying to do with your car drift, auto cross ect. if your not going to do the work your slef with the money your workin with i would say go with the RB25DET you can get one between 2,500 and 3,500$ then probly 1,000$ plus to have some one install it. if you have some mechenical experence i would go with the sr20det s14 or s15 black top thats what i put in my s14 its a real easy swap took me about 6 hours with one other person i got the engine for 2,100 with free shipping. the ka + T are trash stright waste of money unless you rebuild and bore the engine because most N/A engines are only good up 2 5psi so if u just slap a turbo on it you will probly blow it. And personly i hate people who kill there 240's with heavy ass v8's but i know you can get an LS1 for about 1,500
