Japanese License Plates :
The different colors are based on the size of the vehicle and whether
it is for commercial use or not. Regular cars have a white background
and black letters. Private cars under 660 cc have a yellow background
with black letters. Commercial use vehicles over 660 cc use white
letters on a green background while those under 660 cc use white
letters on a black background. If you see a white plate with a red
line through it, it's a temporary or dealer's plate. Blue plates
are usually diplomatic, while white plates with a certain kanji on
them are for consulate vehicles. White plates with no Japanese and
six digit numbers are military.

DAMN your info is a little off

a Y- Plate or E-Plate or A-Plate which are in engligh, well the symbol is, the place of where the plates are from is VERY much still in KANJI

ALL Normal vehicles over 1000CC are all white with green letters, the difference is where the plate was issued in KANJI and the symbol is HIRAGANA

BLUE Plates that just have Numbers and letters in English are all government, even on Japanese or US GOV Vehicles.

Just to help you info, for whatever reason it was for. hehe

I like the plates that light up at night. I have never seen E and A plates. I guess thats a mainland thing.

The plates that light up are 5000yen more I think..

E--Plate is for imported american cars with left hand drive for military people

A- plate is for the yellow K-cars type, they dont get a Y, I guess not good enough HEHE

I know the green BUG is a JSPEC bug though, meaning the wheel is on the right even though you cant see it, due to the 56 hehe

SA(SAW is how its pronouned) for the Yellow 50 plate over the German plate. He didnt mention that so I would hehe

TO (TOE is how its pronouned) 578 plate in the box hehe

The plates page works for me. It's very informative, I've seen it before.

Random side note: South Korea's license plate system is VERY similar except Korean replaces the Japanese characters (of course) and the colors/typefaces are different.
