NX1600 Cluster In a Zenki S13

Yup, A digital NX1600 cluster in a 89 240 coupe. It was hard, believe me, but I did it just to put away rumors that it couldn't be done, and to shut a few people up. The wiring was the hard part, I hate Nissan wire diagrams, they are so vague about everything, I didn't need to use the NX speed sensor, or the temp sensor, because I have a twin cam swap with a 89 single cam tranny, and I guess the 89 tranny speed sensor puts out the same pulses per revolution as a NX speed sensor. But any way here are the pics.

Thanks dude, I still gotta fix the cluster garnish, its not quite the right shape. So I am gonna cut the part that surrounds the cluster off, shape it with foam, and have my friend wrap everything in carbon fiber, that's the next step.

That's an easy thing for someone to say, but usually when I'm doing something custom, I'm just trying to get it done. Let alone taking pics through the whole process etc. Only in the past couple years have I started taking a mass amount of pictures when I'm doing something custom. So unfortunately, there are over 15 years of custom work that I don't even have a single picture of.

I couldn't be bothered. It's not a matter of which wires you have to splice (you have to cut and re-solder every single one of them) it's knowing what each one is for. If you can read Nissan wiring diagrams, know how to solder, and understand how gauge clusters work, you can figure it out all by yourself like I did... And I don't even own a Nissan.

That's very true, Fireblade RX-7 and I were just concentrating on getting it done, I just decided it would be cool to document the installation and the cluster running. It was no easy task, just ask Fireblade, it involved countless hours of staring at Nissan wire diagrams and labeling what each wire from each harness does. And yes, we used both 240sx and NX1600 FSM's and played connect the dots,lol. It's also a matter of finding a NX digital cluster in the junkyard in working condition with the dash harness still attached, because you need to cut it so you'll have the pigtail with all the connectors attached to the NX cluster. Also they are pretty rare and hard to find. But as soon two showed up in the junkyard by my house I nabbed both of them.

I was thinking about that the other day, I could do it if the HUD controller is self contained. If I remember correctly, the digital speedometer in the early S13 is kind of large, and would be hard (and not cool) to hide behind the dash if the HUD controller is built in.

I could do it, but the cluster probably wouldn't fit under the dash, the NX cluster barely fit with lots of dremeling.

If you come to me with a working NX cluster, an S13 cluster sub-harness, a cluster-side harness pigtail from the NX (with at least a foot of harness still attached) and $250, and maybe we can work something out. It took me 12 hours to complete that harness and test it. If you sit down and stare at it long enough you can figure out how to do it once you apply some logic.

Its all about the refresh cycle, early cars make the speed "jump" because it refresh every 1.xx second, the new cars has a better refresh cycle, over 35 Hz; I might try to find one that will fir my GTR dash !

Anyways looks great ! Lot of works has been done. And if you don't like the Nissan diagrams, u won't like the volks!

no need for a diagram,all u have to do is follow the wires that is on the back of both gauges,theres a guide and names so u cant be lost,and just memorized the middle black connector pinout which is which,the middle plug is for digital.and the rest is easy.

im lovin it, i was thinking of doing the digital rpm gauge from a Q45 into my digital cluster on my S13, i did and ek to s2k swap on my boys civic si, shit was a pain in the ass although people already had the wiring pin outs for both clusters, worst parts was the rpm gauge, he had to get this thing for a motor cycle to calibrate the rpms, in the end it looks awesome, i'd love something like thid in my S13 but my question would be the same as the other people in here asking about the hud working in our windshields with that nx cluster, great job with this

Bump from the dead do anyone happen to have pics of how you trimmed your cluster bezel the one with emergency light button and flip light button etc.. I trimmed top part of mine a lot and still won’t fit in there and mine is old and brittle so if I keep thinning it out it will break so I wanna know if I’m trimming it wrong or what happend.. def need help! Would mean a lot thanks! :)
